tronnocon part 2.

I'm down.  When works for you folks?

Literally all the time. I live just outside of the city, so I can be there whenever you guys choose!

i actually live in the city and am not terribly busy at the moment, so i'd also be able to hang out anytime!
maybe we need to start a separate thread for tronnocon 2?

Really I am most interested in a time, as opposed to a place. Can we at least get a lock on which month it is going to be in? And if you're feeling extra sassy, maybe even which part of the month? (early/mid/late)

Honestly, we'd be better off figuring the location before the month. With the extremely varying weather patterns in different parts of the US, picking the month could eliminate entire locations. For example, I'm not sure I could personally handle anything but NY in, say, July, but if we aimed for a January or something, I'd want to be as far away from the north end of the country if I'm going to actually pay for a vacation.

Those are the two most overrated cities on a largely overrated coast. Woulda liked to go to Denver again but that's not the way the wind is blowing.

Well, if those don't work and some of you are interested, Shane is going to visit an uncle (?) in Columbus and I was going to drag him down here to hang out sometime in October? (You'll have to ask him.) Cincinnati isn't all that interesting compared to most places, but if it's early enough in the month, the Renaissance Festival will be going on, and there's some nice museums, a nice zoo, and I know lots of interesting places. I won't be able to put anyone up, but hotels are dirt cheap and we could even go camping or something.

Honestly, we'd be better off figuring the location before the month.
So, I disagree with your reasoning because the date has a much larger impact on who can attend and thus who cares about where it's going to be.

Then again I think I might be the only person who was excluded solely on account of the date this time, so maybe not?

I have to agree with Slick's post above because one of the major factors for attendants is likely to be school/college/university term times and these are different across continents and even countries.

I certainly wouldn't be able to attend if it was in May because that is when my exams are.

Destination doesn't matter to me though, i'll let the knowledgeable people about the cities sort it out.

See we've got this ugly coupled system where timing is more important for some people and location is more important for some people. What to do what to do.

See we've got this ugly coupled system where timing is more important for some people and location is more important for some people. What to do what to do.

Find out who's actually interested in going one way or the other?

The timing will matter less if only like two or three college/uni folks actively show interest or feel they can afford it next year. If say twenty people confirm interest and fifteen of them are out of college, I have to imagine the ones out of college would have to take precedence as the majority. Conversely, if fifteen out of twenty are still in school, that would make it so that picking the time first would be borderline mandatory.

So how about we get a running count of who is legitimately interested. Just say if you're interested, what timeframe is best for you and where you'd LIKE to go.

For me, I'm definitely interested, though I'd prefer NYC or DC any time from August on. Anything other than NYC or DC, I probably won't be able to make due to budget constraints, though I'm more flexible on the time than the location, I just need time to save up. If we did somewhere further away, I'd be a very tentative maybe, depending on how long I'd have to save and, bluntly speaking, how many people I legitimately care about who are going. No offense, folks, but I don't think most people want to travel 2,000 miles if they're really only interested in seeing one or two of the people who attend.

I am very interested in attending again, but I would have to be before school starts for me next summer/fall. I did notice this year that doing it right at the beginning of August put me in a bad spot financially when it came time to buy textbooks for the semester. Early July would be ideal- time to work during the summer beforehand, time to work before school starts afterward.

As for location, none of them will be any cheaper for me so I don't really mind. I've been to NYC and DC before, but I wouldn't mind visiting again. And I think it would be great to go to California because I've never been there.

you don't even know if all of those people want to go. someone should just make a vote, but only for people who would go if the city they're voting for is chosen.

for instance, even if it's here, I already know I'm not going, so I'm not going to vote.

Dates are tantamount in my case, because I will be going no matter where it is. I think we already ruled out May on everyone's account, which is good, because I will be in Oz. So any time between the beginning of June and the beginning of August, basically.

New York is not my favourite choice. I have been there once or twice (no, I am not counting the airport) and never really had a great experience, but I am 100% for a place that lots of people can make it to, especially if those people can make it a better trip than I had previously.

I am also 100% for the west coast. If we do it in Sandy Eggo and we can swing doing it the same weekend of 2010 I will totally go for ComiCon and just stay. Would be so excellent.

(I am also 100% for a full scale GlasgaeCon and AustinCon as well. Like I said, location ain't no thang.)

Edit: Quiet, Harry! He must never beat me!

If me and Kat are able to make it time wise we are seriously up for wherever (US/Canada of course). The location is maybe 10% of the reason I go to these. On the other hand, for pure cost reasons for those involved and the location of a majority of forumites I really can't in good faith suggest the West Coast.

Also, we really do need to get the poll added to this thread so we can actually get this sorted out rather than bicker about it. I'll also bring up a time frame with Kat since she's the one we need to work around. Just keep in mind our opinion in this whole affair might be entirely moot depending on what happens grad school wise for Kat.

I could very easily attend a West Coast con, and with some difficulty could attend an East Coast con. While I don't work in hotels anymore because it is a terrible place, my parents do have timeshare property all over the US that they are willing to give out to family for free stay. So depending on where we go, I may be able to go if I can get a free hotel room and only have to pay for travel. Also, I could put some people up as well.

Okay. So now that we've had debate, I'm going to initiate voting, but it's not going to be a straight "vote for what you want". We're gonna do this mad official.

Voting Round 1

WHERE CAN YOU ATTEND?

Vote in this poll for the options that you can attend, assuming it's held in a time in which you can attend anywhere. DO NOT VOTE ON YOUR PREFERENCE. JUST WHICH CITIES YOU CAN GO TO.

If some of you are so worried about a lot of these being so east coast and others are worried they can't go if it's west coast because it's so far away, then pick something in the middle of the country. The two cities suggested so far being close to center are Austin and Denver. Both are cheaper than flying from one coast to another and would also be a change from the north eastern corner of the US. Austin is a pretty cool city and from what I've heard Denver is as well.

Also, we can have cons more than once a year and in more than one location. The smaller ones are just as fun as the big ones.

See this is how I feel about location. It is more a 'can we feasibly get there' than a 'I really like this city'. Even though I do have a big crush on San Francisco.

Except we haven't done one of these big meetups in the North eastern corner of the US, which is part of why I haven't attended one. Toronto and Chicago are both hella far for me (Toronto was worse as it was either a nine/ten hour drive or a flight that was more expensive than going to freakin' England would've been) and I don't really count Boston so much as that was essentially three folks I'd never met sleeping on my floor for a couple days plus Shane and my girlfriend.

Austin and Denver are honestly, to me, not as appealing as California from an East Coaster's perspective as California seems to have a lot more to do and isn't much farther or more expensive than SF or SD.

OK so we've got a poll already but for the sake of it:

Time: I don't know when exactly I'll be in N America, because of a few other factors financial and personal, but at the moment it is probably looking like I'll be there July, and then starting work for the snow season.

Where: Anywhere. My personal preference is (in order): SF, D.C, NYC, Austin, The rest.

Timewise late June/early July would be best for me (late July is graduation time) so that it is after the exam period.

Locationwise the East coast would be better for cost but if people prefer the West coast thats fine aswell.

this is personal preference again, but the thing for me is that if everything goes according to plan i will be moving to vancouver in a year for grad school and maybe to live permanently, depending on what happens. california does sound genuinely exciting and i will still probably try to make the trip there if that's where the next meetup is, but with my future plans it just makes sense to wait until i'm several hundred miles closer to that end of the country. again, though, that's just my own bias.

I'm assuming that any meetup is going to be in the summer months, which is a ridiculous hard time for me and Jason to get time off of work. It would definitely be easiest for us to make it to a San Francisco meetup since we live within driving distance and could come for just a couple of days. We could afford to get to any of the cities suggested, but that doesn't matter if we can't get the time off of work.

Aside from our own personal convenience, I do think San Francisco would be the best place. Lots to do there, close to other places of interest if people want to get out of the city and go to the beach or redwood forests or something. The weather is mild in the summer. Plus I think we all forget just how many forumers there are that live in the western half of the country. Having another meetup in the same region (yes, I'm putting Chicago, Toronto, New York, and DC in the same region) would probably just mean another meetup of the same people. Not that the same people aren't awesome, but maybe we should give some of the younger/don't have as much money to burn/live hella far away forumers a chance to make it to a con too?

Portland would be my second choice; I just got back from there and it is a great place. Lots of great little shops, Powell's books can take all day, the public transit is free downtown, and it's just a clean looking city with great vibes. The hostel I stayed at was pretty excellent too, if we wanted to go that route again. Denver, San Diego, and Austin are maybes for me.

I don't think I'd go if it was in NYC... I used to go there every August before I went back to school and it is miserable there at that time of year. Plus there is just so much to do there and so many places to go that it isn't the kind of place that I like to go to with a large group of people. People that want to go to NYC, i really recommend that you take your own trip there and see what you want to see. I also think I'd skip out on DC... I want to go, but not during the summer tourist season.

Pick a good place this time guys, I really don't want to skip out on next year.

you do lurk below the surface of the forum, emerging occasionally to pluck a young man from our ranks before plunging back into the murky depths from whence you came

last year:
edith, mike, phil, tyler, julia, james, tommy, katie, mai, yelley, jason, stephen, kat, tania, james, liz, linds, johnny c, jon

this year:
edith, emilio, oli, stephen, kat, jodie, linds, may, mai, john, alex, tommy, johnny c, liz, dennis, joe hocking, jens, kris, katie

my apologies if i missed over anybody.  my point is here that i don't get what the hell everybody is talking about "avoiding the same faces".  for the most part the only people who went to both cons are the same people who are going to try and go to every one no matter where it is (probably because they are giant friendless losers irl).

if it's on the west coast, more west coast people might show.  if it's on the east coast, more europeans might show.  either way there are going to be new faces.
