Ok I have to ask this question only because I've seen it used quite abit.  What is a "shipper"?

The term "shipping" is, somewhat perversely, derived from the word "relationship" in the sense that the 'shipper' (a person who "'ships") conjures a romantic relationship between two or more characters in a fictional work and declares that this pairing (or more) is the the only appropriate relationship for the participants to be involved in, regardless of the established canon of the work, the authors directly stated intent and all logic.

Some "shippers" do go on to become "ficcers", or writers of fan-fiction (derivative works of fiction based [generally rather loosely] on an existing work), but that is not to say that all shippers are ficcers or that all ficcers are shippers, though the intersection between the two groups is quite large.

I don't consider shippers or fanfic writers "depraved" or disgusting.  That's pretty judgmental and rude.  Many people fantasize about fictional characters from books and movies and yes even cartoons. The only difference is that fanfic gets written down. There is plenty of traditional fiction (as well as porn) created by taking already established characters and putting them in new settings and giving them new relationships where they *GASP* have sex!

There is nothing wrong with some good old kinky fantasizing. Jeph never seems to have issues with other artists taking his characters to some very graphic and kinky places.  The problem comes when idiots with too much free time won't give it a rest and have to let all of us know their deep dark fantasies in an inappropriate forum. I wish more of them would just write some fanfic, get it out of their systems and move on. That's what I do.

Oh and I vote "Mar-Mar" because it's adorably gag inducing.

Well , i do. Firstly , 'judgmental' is justly one of the entries in the "Dictionary of Bullshit" , and secondly, there are few ruder things possible on a forum than what said shippers do here.
Yes, many people do have such fantasies, and usually it is harmless, but it is very different to exposing it to public. At best such posts here inane , at worst disgusting.  I do not care  much , they are easy to skip, and i am not sensitive but such exhibitionism is probably not a good sign. I mean, i do consider Faye attractive, but it does not compel me to invent ways she could be coupled with random other chars.

'Round these parts, "Marigold" is pronounced with the first syllable identical to the first syllable of "marinate". Using this pronunciation, "Mar Mar" and "Mar Bear" don't exactly roll of the tongue. Due to regional differences in the distinction (or lack thereof) between the pronunciations of Mary, marry, and merry, I'm thinking that in New England maybe the first syllable of "Marigold" rhymes with "bear", making Faye's suggestions much more palatable. But even then, Faye is from Georgia, so maybe that accent is coming into play. On the other hand, she's made efforts in the past to hide her southern accent, so it could still be the New England influence........but it still comes out sometimes when she's been drinking, as she is now.....

Hmmm....in retrospect that should have been obvious. I'm not much of a linguist, but I'll do my best to explain--I even found a sound file to help! Where I'm from (near Allentown, PA) Mary and merry are pronounced almost identically, and in these two words Mar/mer would in fact rhyme with 'bear'. Marry is pronounced differently, and this is the "mar" used in Marigold (and marinate). Maybe I should just go to the sound file:

The speaker says "Mary, dear, make me merry. Say you'll marry me," using the pronunciations to which I am most accustomed. I would say "Marigold" using the 'mar' sound the way it is pronounced in 'marry' in that sound clip--it doesn't rhyme with 'bear', and actually makes it a bit awkward to say "Mar Bear" or "Mar Mar".

I have been in microbreweries where they do this (four samples of various beers, about 250 ml each) and offer a little sheet telling about each of the drinks in the batch.  Kind of a fun way to check out new beers. 

The Buckeye Beer Engine, which is my new favorite food and alcohol hot spot, does this. As a newbie to all things beer related, it makes trying out the hard ciders and fruit beers easier (I hate bitterness so I'm starting light, heh). The first time there we got two samples, which were roughly 250ml glasses, filled to the top, and charged a few bucks each, but after that when we ask for a sample we get about a quarter of that and they never charged us. They have an on tap sheet that lists the type (cider, IPA, lambic, fruit beer, etc.) alcohol by content and bitterness, as well as a short description of ingredients and flavors. And you can't beat them for a burger or fried pickles. Mmnm, I may have to go there tonight...

even 'mar-mar' would be 'mare-mare', which deviates it from dora and marten's babytalk, in that i assumed their's was 'mar', etc.

and i am a georgia girl myself, and if 'mar-bear' were pronounced unlike 'mare-bear', it would NOT rhyme just because of the accent, damnit. we don't pronounce 'bear' like 'bar' here.

Despite the "progress" of our times, I've always felt that all the progress since the mid-1900's is entirely due to geniuses like Edison and Einstein, and subsidiarily from people like Les Paul, who created ingenious tools based on the early great discoveries. Not sure about 'low-hanging fruit'. Principles of electro-magnetism, and much of electronic paraphernalia into the latter 1900's, were non-trivial things to discover or invent.

I've always approached the issue from my background in artistic expression (music in particular). There's a quote I once heard, though I can't remember the attribution, that says something like: The great banquet of music ended in the early 1900's (post-Romanticism). Now in our age, we are the mice after the banquet, making what we can of the leftover crumbs.
