So, there's this...
« on: 29 Jan 2010, 07:32 »

Let me start by linking you to this.

Now - as I understand it, I get to listen to Tim Tebow, and his mom talk about her experience and her choice not to have an abortion,  but GoDaddy is being told that their ad is too offensive for the Superbowl...

Really CBS?  Fucking Really?  I'd love to know what changed from the last time they had the Superbowl.  Hmmm, oh I know, the economy sucks, and their so called 'standards' are right out the fucking window, because they need the cash!  Yep, that'd be it.  You know, if they'd just taken anyone's money that was willing to offer it in the first place, I wouldn't give a shit now - but they pretended to have some responsibility - right up until it affected their bottom line...

Idiotic assholes anyway...

**steps down off his shoebox painted to look like a soapbox...

Sorry, just had to get that out of my head, because it wouldn't go away on its own for some reason.   :-P

It'd be appreciated, yes.  Apologies for posting in the wrong place.

That's just sad.  What exactly was it about the Godaddy video that's offensive?  That's no ok but having an advertisement that makes women feel shame for a healthcare service that is incredibly beneficial is kosher?

As for the gay dating site thing....is an advertisement during the super-bowl really the best choice?

It shows two football fans kissing. People can be gay and enjoy athletic men in tight trousers you know?
But saving $3m by having the advert rejected but still getting the publicity is pretty nice advertising.

Why wouldn't it be? I mean, if you've got the money, that's some o the best advertising you could get no matter what. Oh, is it because its for a gay site? Yeah, you are right, shouldn't they advertise during a sewing show, or a during gay porn or something? I mean gay guys don't actually like things that other guys like as well.

Also, the banned commercial is hella funny, and not offensive at all. And I don't really understand the whole abortion thing.

I don't really understand the whole abortion thing.

Well, when a man and a woman meet casually and find each other attractive, they have this special hug they do while wearing raincoats, but sometimes the raincoats don't work and the woman gets pregnant, so she goes to the doctor and the doctor pulls the baby out of her and puts it in the trash can while worshiping Satan and praying for the coming of the anti-Christ that he might murder us all in the name of his dark lord.

I always find it kinda funny how homophobic a lot of sports culture is and how there's this underlying expectation (perhaps hope is a better term here?) that gay people wouldn't have an interest in stereotypically macho activities. Gay men are still men, and pop psychology likes to paint men as bonding through shared activities as opposed to direct communication. With that in mind, one would think that sports would be a great way for gay dudes to get out there, have fun and meet people in a comfortable environment. You know, just like anyone else. That people don't want to acknowledge this hits me as especially amusing when you consider the cliches that are out there about gay guys and gyms. Hell, if what I've seen from video games and manga is any indication, being super masculine and working out constantly just runs the risk of making you look extra gay by Japanese standards.

Yeah, that's totally what I was implying.  Reinforcing gay stereotypes is totally what I'm all about.  3 million dollars is an incredible amount of money for an advertisement that is being shown to an audience where the majority are probably not going to be responsive to it.  I'm not saying gay men don't like sports, I'm sure tons of them do, I just don't think that this is necessarily the best place to have this kind of advertisement.  I am not saying that this is like advertising Cosmo during Manswers, I'm saying that this might not be the best venue for them to chase after.

That's perhaps true, but the problem with that is you would then be relegating yourself to rather narrowly focused publications and venues. After all, gays being in the minority is just a fact of doing business for such a venture. If you've already reached about as much benefit as you're going to get from gay friendly advertising branching out into a Super Bowl ad might not be the worst move, particularly since they're already getting some buzz despite not even getting a time slot. Plus, I'm sure there's more than a small element of pride involved here. Advertising such a thing in the Super Bowl is rather bold, all things considered, so I can't help but appreciate the idea a bit, whether it is a good one financially or not.
