I suck at video games
« on: 02 Sep 2009, 15:43 »

I really do.  Any competitive multiplayer game I play ends with me getting my butt kicked.  I'm really good with tactics, but when it comes time to click on the correct area of the screen to shoot the enemy in the head, I always suck so hard.  The first thing I do when I start a new video game is make sure the difficulty isn't up above "Ultimate Fucking Pussy Mode."  Now, don't get me wrong, I love playing video games.  I just can't do it well.  This is something of which I'm generally ashamed, but then I though, "Maybe I'm not alone in this fact."  Who else loves video games, but kind of sucks at them, and always has?

High five! Me too. I suck at games, or at least the ones 1337 gamers care about. I'm quite good at Guitar Hero/Frets on Fire etc. I've mostly given up on playing games against people. My 14 year old brother beats me regularly on any game we choose. Mostly I let the AI kill me repeatedly instead

I am blessed with great gameing skills. From Rainbow 6 to SWAT 4 to CounterStrike to Dawn of war,i've always been skilled.
Although even then i still get killed alot over a long weekend, bad luck, bad timeing or just being outclassed,it happens all the time out there in the world of gameing.

I like how three of the games you listed are essentially the same genre. I'm very good at games thanks to brute repetition and a familiarity with common video gaming conceits; I'm not a terribly coordinated person in general so I doubt my skills stem from any sort of gift. I'm only so-so at FPS games, but that's mostly because I almost never, ever, ever play them. I remember being ahead of the curve back when the ol' primordial shooters like Unreal and Quake ruled the roost, but I'm way behind the curve these days largely due to indifference. I'm one of those people stuck in the no man's land between "Guys who can occasionally dominate a public TF2 match" and "Guys who perform well consistently in a decent clan match". I've never even actually played Counterstrike, so that should give you an idea of the experience gap we're talking about.

I suck at adventure games. I love them, but I am the worst adventure gamer ever. It's somewhat sad.

if you're good at tactics and you want to play online FPS'rs maybe try hardcore search & destroy in Call of Duty 4? I dunno, I'm the guy in CoD4 who gets the 20 kill streaks in domination or standard game modes, but in hardcore search & destroy, most of the time I come out with a roughly even kill/death ratio. that mode how well you do has a lot more to do with how well you know the map and if you can find the other guys without them finding you/outthink them.

I suck at guitar hero. which is annoying because it's like the one game I can play with all of my friends at a party. my disappointment is somewhat offset by my friend's usually terrible choice in music in those games, but still, I can't do more than easy, unless I play bass. also recently I went alllll the way back to beloved Ratchet and Clank : Up Your Arsenal online and it was fucking ridiculous. I remember being boss at it when it first came out, but now I can't dodge shit. that game was so much fun.

I find that I am really terrible at most FPS games unless I sit and obsessively play them for about three or four hours.  I don't usually play FPS's, though, so maybe if I played one regularly I wouldn't be so shit at them.  I am truly terrible at adventure games though.  Every other problem is a guide dang it, and the ones that aren't still take me a good bit of head-scratching to figure out.  In fact, the only game I'm any good at The Legend of Zelda series, and basically everybody with thumbs is good at those games.

Oh!  I am also good at Bloons!

So, even if I can't shoot straight (amusingly, I'm much better at shooting in real life than in video games...?), I still might do okay since I can usually out-think my opponent?

well I can't guarantee that because usually you need to put bullets in them before they die but I can say it's usually much slower paced (unless you've got a really crazy teams or are in a clan. I was playing with a bunch of guys with mics once and the entire game was done in like under a minute of gameplay) anyway if you outthink them well enough you'll have plenty of time to line up a shot. snipers for accuracy or put a scope/sight on an M14, with stopping power on regardless of the weapon, and it should be a one hit kill most of the time. most assault rifles are also a good option, but less accurate. pistols work fine for close range, forget the other guns (except maybe the RPD). c4, claymores, and grenades are an option if you really can't use the guns though.

also you need to know the maps really well. so if you haven't played it before you won't do so well to begin with.

I've always been a turtler, so I suck at the vast majority of RTSes. The only ones I ever play are maps in Starcraft that have unlimited resources (Big Game Hunters in particular. Classic.)

So you say you suck at video games, eh? C'mon guys, you gotta sack up! You know why? Because...

That's right, girls dig guys with "skills." It doesn't necessarily have to be a particular genre (I'm not really impressed by FPS/Halo players, honestly), but at least a general knowledge of video games is appreciated by nerdy girls like me. Also, bonus points if you like to play fun co-op games like Katamari that don't require any specific dexterity. You roll shit together, it's fun. Fighter games, beat-em-up's, and flash games are also options for so-called "casual gamers."

Also, if playing DOTA gives you a hard-on... you've got issues (and probably don't have a girlfriend- I base this assumption off of all my single guy friends who are DOTA geeks).

Basically, if you don't got the chops, be confident about what abilities you do have!

Do you mean that scenario in warcraft III? Just throwing that out there because I wracked my brain for a few seconds there and couldn't think of anything else that fits that acronym. People actually still play that? Well, then again, I guess I shouldn't be surprised since there's still people playing counterstrike 24-7...

Then again, I'm not really one to talk. I still regularly destroy my brother at tetris.

I'm pretty good at platformer games (I'll own anyone's butt's on the old Sonic games for the sega genesis)
I'm okay/decent at rpg's, same with adventure.
I'm not to great at fps or primarily shooting oriented games.
I'm okay at rts stuff

But I like all of them and most of all I have fun.

I have an extensive knowledge of video games.  I've been playing them for well over half my life (holy crap, really!?), but I'm just not good at them.  Sure, I can play on single player, and eventually beat most games, but God help me if I ever try to play online.  Maybe saying I suck at video games is a little much, but compared to pretty much everyone online, I suck at video games.

I just remembered one time in college my friend's dorm decided to have a Halo LAN thing.  My friends and I decided to enter ourselves as a team, because we thought we were good at playing video games together.  In the three matches we played to 50, we got more than 10 kills in one of them.

nobody cares if you suck at halo anyway. at least nobody that matters. Also I just remembered I suck at games that have built in cover systems. I can never get the hang of them, and they always stick you up against a wall and then I get pissed because I am not in optimal cover and I get distracted and someone shoots me in the head because the goddamn cover system fails to account for the fact that you are a big manly man who cannot fit behind the wall it is programmed to try and hide you behind. I'm assuming this is my fault anyway because none of my friends seem to care about it.

I have to say favorite multiplayer game here is littlebigplanet, I could play the shit out of that game for the rest of my life and I'd be happy. Assuming I'm doing it with friends. Also Eden is bangin', in a relaxing with friends way.

Is it just me, or is there always a significant problem with the difference between "Take cover here!" and "Jump over this thigh-high wall and get shot!"  I mean, this is pretty much the big thing what deterred me from Gears of War.  Well, that and the Rob Liefield buffmen all making out with their own testosterone.  But mostly the cover system.

Quote from: Tycho Brahe (Jerry Holkins)
There is a point at which "the rookie" says there are a shitload of grubs down there.  Marcus Fenix corrects him, suggesting that there are, in fact, "Ten Shitloads." I want to grant that Gears of War takes place on the planet Sera, where Shitload may be a genuine unit of measurement - but that's dumb, and this line is dumb, and the people speaking are idiots, and they live in a world of dumbshits where stupidity of a form of currency.

This is my quintessential quote about GoW.  That said, I did enjoy the game despite never being able to use the cover system.  Whatever happened to "I see a wall here, I'm going to hide behind it" as opposed to now "I see a wall, and I hope the game will allow me to hide behind it"?

It's not just Halo I suck at, it's pretty much all the games.  The most recent game that I played online in any sort of serious manner was Battlefield 2.  It was lots of fun, but really frustrating, because I'd just die all the time.  Maybe I've just never really tried to get better at video games, but that sounds like practice, and if I'm going to take time out of my day to practice, it's going to be on the bass.

I totally hear you, you shouldn't have to practice video games. the entire point is that it's supposed to be a quick form of escapism.

(quick tip: if you're not so good at the aiming part of FPS maybe try playing with your sensitivity level, when my dad started playing FPS'rs a year or two ago he would always massively overcompensate and end up sliding his aimer wayyy off to the side of his target. while a lower sensitivity will make you slower to react it'll make you less likely to slide off the target with a slight joystick movement)

It really just takes me too long to aim, so by the time I've got my target, my target isn't there any more...and neither am I!  I've also usually got the sensitivity level down to the point that turning around is as arduous as avoiding icebergs in large cross-Atlantic passenger ships in 1912.

I don't really buy into the whole quick form of escapism thing, at least not entirely. There's room for some games where fiddling around and learning to cope with failures is 90% of the experience. E.g, Dwarf Fortress.

It's a subjective thing, like every other word that encompasses several styles, moods, meanings, etc.  Some people like to just relax with a game and play it at their own leisure for a bit of fun and some people like to sit at a game and grind to higher levels in order to become supremely powerful.  Hell, people make livings out of competitive gaming for Christ's sake.

I have no idea. I'm an optimizer and a min-maxer. I play games for a mix of challenge and relaxation, depending on my moods. Which is pretty much exactly why I never, ever power level if I have a choice in the matter. That's really more of for the OCD types who have to have "perfect" saved files.

Oh God.  Me too.  RPG's are terrible for me.  I always feel like I have to experience all of the content possible on the first play through, because if I play through a second time, most of the stuff is going to be the same and therefore boring.  As a result, I feel that I have to create the perfect player character every time.

I absolutely hate RPG (yet love WoW) only because of items. I will hold onto some random item throughout the whole damn game until i get tired of seeing it in my bags and then throw it away cuz hey its just a random item im not gonna need it anyway. Just to find out that said item is crucial in the end game and therefore im either screwed or have to backtrack and do it all over again which is still basically being screwed. I love the strategy and levelling my players up, but seriously items piss me off.

I phrased that poorly; missing content doesn't necessarily bother me that much. I'm an odd combo: I don't fear hard games but I will absolutely avoid putting in any more time than I have to in order to get something done. My goal is typically to destroy the game in as short a period of time as I can while avoiding the use of spoilers or guides. (I'd say that Fallout and BG1&2 are the only RPGs I've ever really played to death, come to think of it.) For example, when I played Dragon Quest 8, I knew I didn't want to power level and that I didn't want to fuck around visiting the same cave twice just to get all the way to the bottom. And because I'm a veteran of that series, I figured the best way to do this would be a three pronged approach: 1. Carry a ton of healing items. 2. Abject cowardice; fleeing against nastier groups is totally okay and should be encouraged. 3. No, seriously: carry a ton of healing items. That Bandana you started with only gives one defense point? Fuck that shit; sell it and use the money to buy a god damned medicinal herb! Basically, I'm the polar opposite of those guys who spend an hour or two leveling in FF games just so they can get through dungeons without having to blow any consumables.

That reminds me of the endgame of Return to Zork, where

SPOILERS (just in case)

You have to throw like every item in the game down a hole to make a bridge rise into place. I think the first / only time I got there, I threw all the crap down the hole and was literally one item away from completion.

One. Item.

Needless to say it is why I have never completed that game.

I'm pretty good at most video games but ultimately, I think that there's always one kind of game for everyone. Start with simple things, then move on to more complicated games. I strongly recommend the Game & Watch Gallery Series for first time gamers.

I don't think any of us are first time gamers.  I've been gaming pretty avidly for about 14 years.  By "pretty avidly," I mean I spent most of my free time playing video games (but apparently not honing my skills...).

It's crazy how much attitude and approach can actually affect these things. I tend to learn games faster in a multiplayer environment than say, putzing around on my own. Part of it is the simple fact that I can observe or compete against players who do things that I may not have discovered on my own (Fighters being the most obvious example), but I think the bigger issue is that I feel more accountable for my performance, particularly if the game is cooperative. For example, I'm a raider in WoW and I don't really like the idea that my slacking could negatively affect the game experience of 24 other people, so I tend to do a lot less risk taking than I do in single player or competitive games (in which I tend to be a notorious gambler. Zerg rushes are second nature to me).

You know, usually that item would be in the "Key Items" area
Fallout 2 is what pissed me off. I needed a generator or something to be able to get into the Brotherhood of Steel area and i had this freakin thing the whole game till its weight just started pissing me off. So i dropped in some town not knowing i might actually need it and i of course forgot where I dropped it at. So i couldnt go any furthur and then my time ran out so I died. Never loved/hated a game so much.

Man, what really annoyed me in fallout 2 was blowing open the damned entrance to the ruins of the old military base from Fallout 1. First I tried blowing up the entrance by, you know, setting explosives the exact same fuckin' way I had always set them. For whatever reason, this doesn't open the entrance. So, instead, I tried using the dynamite I found in the area instead of plastic explosives, but that didn't work either. Out of other ideas, I try rigging the dynamite to the mine cart and then seeing if I can push the mine cart or something. You know, because video games sometimes you need to do some completely arbitrary shit like petting the cat or spawning more overlords before your plan is allowed to work; I know better than to try to fight it. Unfortunately, this plan took me quite a while because you can't just select the cart as a container and put set explosives in and have that "count." I found it really unintuitive since in the Fallout universe you can set explosives on tiny children that way, so you'd think the same trick would work on a mine cart. After all, mine carts don't wriggle around so much. All told, it probably took me a half an hour to figure out how to get my man-portable explosives onto a cart so I could roll the explosives to the entrance rather than, you know, use a fuse or otherwise leverage my 95% demo skill.

Dude, that's my problem with a lot of puzzle games.  Not only do I have to solve the puzzle, but I have to solve the puzzle in the exact way that the game designers want me to solve the puzzle.  Sometimes there's a more elegant solution out there!

THE ADVENTURES OF SELF-CONSCIOUS TIRADE

I consider myself the best videogame player in my social group. Best average videogame player.

A lot of my friends like to specialise when it comes to playing video games - as in, you know, the sort of "specialisation" someone would have to shoot a clay pigeon a few hundred metres away to compensate for lack of social skills when not holding a rifle. Because for a lot of people I know, there just isn't any time to get every single fucking 100% Clear or Perfect 10 Hit Combo or 3 Stock or AAAA or Fox Rank in every single game they'll encounter.

There are people who play for the good numbers or the ranks, and people who play for the fun of it. And obviously "for the fun of it" can mean anything between bitch-smacking some random 13-year-old halfway across the multiplayer world to jerking off to wierd porn rewards by yourself. Pretty much everyone I game with seems to fit in-between that spectrum regardless of whatever FPS or TPS or RPG or MMO or RTS or MMOFPRPSreallylongacronym.

I usually end up being an average player in general; I'll play absolutely every single genre of game there is and I'll get my passes. I'll clear the game. I mean, sure, I won't unlock every single meaningless conversation or achieve all the achievements on the thick encyclopaedia of shit passing off as the strategy guide, get every item that I need to deal my 8-figure damage to whatever Motherfucking Satanic End-Boss there is or have my male character fellated whenever possible by all the chicks.

On a multiplayer standard, I'm not the "OriginalAbstractUsernameGuyWithWierdSymbolsThatWerePulledFromTheFuckingCharacterMap" who consistently comes first on the scoreboard 50 kills above the next guy, or even the Dude Who Gets To The Semis In Fighting Game Tournaments. (And by god some of the multiplayer players I see out in shooters have really wierd names)

I mean, sure, there are the talents and the naturals and the people with too much money and time to give a damn about anything else, but usually the better you are at a bunch of videogames, the more likely you'll be shittier with a different bunch. Obviously not a definitive rule.

Personally, I play to succeed, but I usually set that apart from playing to "win", if you guys know what I mean. Starcraft isn't a game I could be earning prize money in South Korea from, but it's a game I can win against people on a semi-regular basis using a solid zealot rush. I don't clear Final Fantasy VIII in 5 hours (it took me a month's worth of game time because I was dicking around with random encounters) but I finish it fast enough to be able to not get bored by grinding. I don't get my paladin to level 99 just so I can kill Diablo in 3 hits but I do work for the numbers enough to be able to survive and see the final cutscenes. I'm not an untouchable when it comes to playing Unreal Tournaments or Counterstrikes but I get my fair share of frags. Same goes for Halo. Lei Wulong is my favourite Tekken character and I can certainly beat the arcade mode and other people by using him, but I haven't memorised every single twitch of my fingers to get constant perfect 2-round KO wins (and to be honest, on a professional scale I haven't seen anyone do that with Lei). And I don't know every single nook and cranny of Rainbow Road, but I can wrestle out a fairly decent position at the end.

Personal prejudices aside, I don't have any real preference for game genres. I do have specific gripes with each type of game, but that's like saying PETA have specific gripes with people who eat animals (seriously, it makes you go durrrr). Anything I pick up, depending on the learning curve, I'll usually get a firm grasp of the mechanics and leave it at that for the rest of the game.

The only thing I won't play are Fisher-Price-Games. In other words, the games designed for 8-year-olds to go "ohh mummy mummy my dalmation just did a doo doo and now I'm going to pick it up wif my stylus" or "my Wii made me a do-re-mi and it sounds really cuuul". That doesn't feel like gaming. I'm more of the "hey I think it's cool that my SimCity isn't the pit of crime or garbage" at the very least.

Just gonna go ahead and jump on the bandwagon of personal gaming experiences and preferences, but later.

In most multiplayer FPS games I get the impression that there is always a simple strategy to end up at the top third of the ranks. It usually takes a few games to figure it out, but overall it seems to be a good idea to mash your movement buttons and jump and dodge around really fast while trying to kill your opponent(s) like shooting bullets of a spray bottle. If you have half-decent aim you can usually get a good score. Then there's always the guaranteed win move that the minority learns to master, like in Unreal Tournament the shock combo whores (HATE those), and to some degree, the Gravity Gun punters in HL2:DM, and basically snipers in all other games. It's not hard to win some in these kind of games, although my death count still outnumbers my kill count most of the time. Nevertheless, I occasionally end number one. I don't think I've played FPS multiplayer games that actually required skill in order to play other than pointing and shooting while moving like a cat chasing a laser dot. Can anyone name one?

As far as single player games go, I mostly play FPS games and sometimes action-RPGs, strategy rarely. I'll play other genres if they're critically acclaimed, but I don't usually go for the massively played big budget games. Is it strange that with games millions of people fall over and praise into heaven I think 'I'll pass'? But for the rest, I often bulldozer the single player campaigns within a week, which makes me a 'power gamer' by someone's definitions of gamer that I read somewhere I guess. I guess I'm a skilled gamer according to the standards that developers set for single player, since I can get through most games on hard mode. That's why I prefer a hard and sometimes frustrating game to one I casually play through, mildly entertained. Even a game that's too easy and somewhat boring I'll play through to the end, there is no game that I won't finish when I haven't put it down after the tutorial. I won't easily walk out of movies, either, so maybe there's a connection there?

that depends completely on what view of skill you have. I'd like to think CoD4 takes skill (mostly because I'm good at it). I know when I'm playing it I don't just run around and jump and shoot as fast as I can. see, your accuracy is significantly lowered when you try and pull shit like that, and combine that with any sort of lag in either your connection or theirs and you're basically relying on luck. So sure, I do run around a lot (but not jump, more like lay down), and yes, I do shoot as quickly as possible. but I'm constantly checking radar, if I have it, and I am factoring in the cover he's got and the cover I've got and all the different places we could shoot at each other from. I take a shot, and if I miss, I get down behind cover, and try and move to wherever he isn't looking so I can shoot again. Or I try and time it so he isn't prepared to shoot yet. yes, I am usually using a sniper (mostly R700, for hardcore search & destroy I've got an m14 w/ an acog, and for closer range I use an m40, no acog), but I definitely wouldn't say snipers are guaranteed wins, I mean, sure, they can be one hit kills, but you hold your breath to steady your aim (and it's slow to aim for the stronger ones), and if it's a moving target and you're moving too then it's really hard to aim right. you could get into position then aim but then you'll be sitting still for a few seconds at least and that means you're an easy target. even if you're in a building and covered then you have to worry about grenades and people coming at you once you get a kill or show up on radar. so yea, a sniper should be a guaranteed 1:1 kill/death if you use it right, but it sure as hell isn't a guaranteed 10 kill streak, even for me. (Actually my longest killstreak was with a shotgun, 25 killss baby, I ran out of ammo in the end and used my knife/someone else's gun for a few).

anyway it's more obvious that there's more to the game than jumping and pointing in the slow gameplay types, like search and destroy, or in the super-fast types, like sabotage. in search & destroy you've only got one life and even if you all die the other team can still lose if you played right. In sabotage a game really shouldn't last much longer than a minute or two, if your team is organized well enough. of course in both of them the shooting and jumping bits are prerequisites, but it is a FPS after all.

It depends on the video game.  I used to think I was awesome at fighting games until I met my boyfriend.

Then I played Super Smash Bros. (N64) with him and he kicked my ass.  Now 7 years later, I've had to play him so much that I'm better than most but still not better than him.  I might get in some awesome ass kickery once in a while, but most of the time he's the winner.

However, I DO suck at games like Left 4 Dead or Day of Defeat.  I don't play enough, I think.  Still love it, just can't seem to get my kill count past meager.

I think that the classifications of first-person shooters falls into a whole bunch of sub-classes. From what you've talked about, you're probably thinking run-and-gun type shooters, which there isn't anything wrong with. I still remember good old days of crappy Counterstrike bots jumping towards you and shooting at the same time. Nowadays it's probably considered a pure run-and-gun. I blame Quake for all that.  :-D

If you're looking for something on the other side of the spectrum, then you'll probably find squad-based-tactical shooters. In terms of multiplayer, some of them can get pretty intense, finding-cover heavy and peekaboo-oriented. CoD4 is a solid example. My personal favourite is Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, but I know people who say that it's pretty tedious. It's most definitely a street-to-street multiplayer and if you don't have awareness of every nook and cranny of the map (sight and sounds are equally as important) you can easily get skullfucked by a bullet.

I suck so bad at video games, it's hilarious. I could probably, after ages and ages of playing them, do pretty okay at a RTS if I'm not playing against a rusher (jesus, I hate to stress), but my FPS skills is just ridiculous. As long as I don't feel that winning is that important, and don't have team members calling me out on it, I like TF2, a lot. It just gets down to the point of no fun no more when there's good snipers/spies on the other team, they kill you and there's not that much to do. It's a game that's never fun if you don't get to line up shots and at least try to kill someone. That's why I tend to jump to scout after a while, but I suck at that class, and never get any kills, so then I quit and meh.

I was quite decent at duelling in my PvE WoW days, my frost mage killing any melee class that didn't have good backup ranged weapons with ease. Those rouges fell like flies. Frost nova and boom you're stuck, bitch. Frostbolt oh shit you move slowly, bitch, and I freeze you all the time. Oh, shit, I have fire blast and cone of cold, you are really taking instant damage here and dying, bitch. If I had ever bothered to level to 60, I would have had Deep freeze and there would be no way in hell anyone could be able to do shit to me if they wasn't a hunter. Fuck hunters.

And I had counterspell and I loved it to bits. It was the best thing.

The main point is that I've spent the majority of my life since I was like 7 or 8 playing games, and I'm not even close to getting a headshot on something that moves or surviving a good zerg rush, so I haven't really gotten anything out of my training. I beat everyone in my class at flash games, and I survive till somewhere between five and ten villages in tribalwars, but that's not really good enough. I'm not reaching my potential, here.

I like to play games for fun, but I still want a challenge and some thinking involved-I'm weird like that, I find thinking fun in a strange way-so games without that kind of bore me, which is why I love rpgs, arpgs, and action-puzzle games so much.

The faster paced stuff I'm not as good at, but I'll be damned if they aren't fun even when you suck.
