Survey
« on: 19 Aug 2009, 00:45 »

I did the survey but had a lot of trouble with the "favourite character" question.

I like just about all of them and felt guilty about have to select Faye over ten others that I like almost as much.

Just like to say... The UK has Bald Eagles.. And I have no idea why.

There is a bird sanctuary Wings over Mull which has a bald eagle that was shot by hunters in a national park in America, and so was moved to Mull (Scotland) for medical care.

Isn't it good that the USA can't look after its own icon.

Sigh.

I was torn between Hanners, Dora and Faye. Hanner's just won out though  :-D

I was kinda baffled how the questions would assist Jeph with ideas though... maybe a story arc about lost keys?

More info than the survey asked for, but which i think may be helpful:
-I have not bought merch from your website, but I have bought prints and sketches from you at ECCC.
-My favorite character is Faye, but the characters I want to see more of are Raven, Tai, and Penelope. Also, the rest of the band.
-I appreciate that you cannot give a strip every day, and also that the comic is non-trivial to produce. That said, I would muchmuch rather see guest strips than Yelling Bird or slow-pitch Pintsize strips.
-I want [more?] wallpapers. Group shots, Pin-ups, memorable scenes with extra detail or cameos, any of it. I'd probably be willing to pay $1-2 for them if I could preview them first.
-I have bookmarks for other comics [A&M, Clango, PfSC], but QC is the only comic I read regularly.
-I'm OK with cliche storylines if they are told well; show me the characters and worry less about 'original' plots.
-I'm very OK with [and sorta expect] relationship drama. That's what the comic is about, right? If things stabilize too much and become idyllic, there's less interest in it for me. I would like to see the girls become happy, but maybe not all of them or all at once.
-It has been great to watch your style change and adapt to the needs of the comic over the years. I hope you continue on this process.
-When you are next in Seattle, we should get coffee.

I chose unlisted, because I have to say Wil is my favorite character overall.  Ever since that Rime of the English Major strip, I've wanted to see what job he does end up with.  I can't believe he didn't make the list over Tequila Monster...

I will add my ext info.

-Characters: more of Faye, Marigold,  Also , if you could someday put in Hanners's dad!
-I have not bought any merch yet although my interests are posters and mugs - i generally do not wear tshirts, preferring proper shirts instead. Also sew-ons that one can sew on various clothing would be reallly cool !
-I agree guest strips are better than yelling bird
-content: i like all what has happened and i like very much that the characters are not just narrative tools for the author but have personalities etc. that appears to direct them.
- I regularly read QC and XKCD and also simulated comic product and lab bratz

Results to this would be nice. When I first found out about this forum, I figured that everyone was in the 13-16 range. I'm curious to see what the statistics were.

Faye used to be my favorite character - she was snarky and witty, but she actually had an interesting backstory and a real character arc. She actually progressed. Most of the other characters don't really seem to do that. (Additionally, Faye is a lot different than she used to be - she used to speak without contractions because she wasn't comfortable with people knowing about her southern accent. What ever happened to that? She's comfortable with her group, but I'd imagine that that character trait would show up in stressful situations, no?)

I like Sven. He's actually an interesting character and I like his point of view.

I would rather not see this comic deteriorate into a soap opera, but I do like interesting character development and plot arcs. Maybe it's time for a large plot arc - something really big. Maybe Dora can't make rent for the coffee shop and has to move it, or has to give it up. How does this affect everyone? I'd be interested to see larger situations like this. Even something smaller, like having to move apartments (like in the early days) would be cool to see. Throw a monkey wrench in the works and see what happens.

I suppose that's it.

i would like to see more of: raven, sven, and angus. angus x faye development is fun. and i'm curious as to if the faye x sven thing is done or not.
i also prefer guest strips to yelling bird comics; that has a lot to do with guest strips getting me into really great comics like anders loves maria and girls with slingshots.

I'd like to see the results too.

Hmm, I'm 23. Being a self involved 20-something I assumed the majority of people that read this comic are in the twenty something age range. However I have met  a few on here who clearly are not (both older and younger).

I just figured that because that is the age of the characters that would be the most relatable age range. However, since time moves soooo oddly in the QC verse I could be reading this well into my thirties and the characters would still be under 28. :D

I am the person who started the Survey topic.  I am age 76, worked full time as an engineer in one of the world's largest companies until I was 74, and still do consulting work.  (I am an Australian and in Australia.)

I am in great awe of Jeph's creative ability in both generating the themes and protraying them panel after panel.  Why do I follow QC?  Because I can clearly remember when I was 25 and I can tell you that there are things that don't change, including the painful bits.  If ever QC stopped or was no longer available on the web, I would go into deprivation shock.

I'm 54, and until a few months ago was blissfully unaware of the existence of webcomics. 'New Scientist' magazine published a link to an old xkcd cartoon in their tongue-in-cheek Feedback column - read that, then read the whole xkcd archive in two sittings.  Links in the xkcd forum sigs led me to MT Your Mind, Comic JK and Questionable Content. QC led in turn to Moo and Keo, and Bunny (yay for home-grown content - I'm British), Dresden Codak, Anders Loves Maria and The Abominable Charles Christopher. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is on the "to do" list.

I've sampled, and abandoned, a few other comics: either I didn't find them funny/interesting or hated the art style.

QC hits the spot though, both art and narrative!

Also, I bought a math-is-delicious T-shirt some time back, but it was a present for my dad (who likes math) rather than a purchase for myself.

Also also: A real-life Hanners? Screw that, I want my own AnthroPC.

Also also also: I had trouble picking an absolute favourite, but voted for Winslow because he's a cute little dude and I like both nonhuman characters and Apple products.

I picked Dora as my Fav (What can i say, Im into Goth chicks), with Hanners and Marten tied for 2nd. 3rd would have to go to the tequila monster, though the name is missleading, hes actualy a G.A.I.H. (Generic Alcohol Induced Halucination), and quite a nice guy if you actually take the time to talk to him...

16 years old here but I've been reading since I was 15.

I'm not sure who I'd pick as a favorite character but I want to see more Raven in the comic, I'd also like to see some sign of whether or not the submacopter caught on.

I picked Raven as my favourite character. There are a lot of other characters I like too, but I really want to see more of Raven.

Apart from that, I do have a suggestion - I think the plot moves far too slowly. There are so many characters and if you spend a week doing one (almost completely insignificant to the "grand scheme" that I suppose is there, somewhere?) plotline for 2 characters, it just doesn't move on. I see it happening a lot that a joke made in a comic will be explained in the next comic, or someone will get more into it, whatever. I don't think it's necessary to do this all the time. I'd like to see more storylines that are actually part of some plot. The comic was a lot more like this in the beginning. I have the feeling that a lot more stuff happened in the first 500 comics than in the 1000 comics after that.

Totally agree.
