Lupercal, why the fuck are you worrying about paying back a debt that doesn't effect your credit rating and will disappear entirely after 25 years?

Because part of me is shit scared when you get a letter through the post saying you owe £21,000?

If it does disappear after 25 years...that's not too bad. Initial shock has passed anyway.

Just got my loan information today, part of it is missing.

Really hope it's a stupid mistake and I don't have to spend forever on the phone with the annoying people from financial aid.

You may find that some of it's already been used to pay various things at the college.  That's often done automatically, and you only receive the balance.

And yes, bureaucratic sadism is a real thing.

Second class, first division. In terms most people would understand, I got 62%. A 2.i is a standard "good grade". A 1st is the best, a 2.ii is less good and a 3rd isn't a lot of use.

A 62% is a good grade? I'll never understand English percent grades, on my side of the pond a 62% is, depending on the school, either failing or barely passing.

Even on this side of the pond it varies in a lot of cases... when I took graduate-level Elecrodynamics, I got a 35% for the course (9% on one of the exams), and I got an A because it was the highest grade in the class.

If you set your standards higher, the percentage cutoffs for a good student will be lower.

US standards are set at "woeful".

Also, curving like Cesium133 describes is criminal.  I realize it makes up for unrealistic testing and grading, but it clearly wasn't measuring what you'd learned in the course.

What it doesn't do is measure how much of or how well you've learned the material!

Some places 80%+ just... doesn't happen. By definition. Grading systems are bonkers more often than not.

So I might have gotten into my Masters or I might not. A letter from the school is on the other side of the country. Gonna have to make my roomies scan it or something. Of course, there should be no way I didn't get in, but I've heard nothing from the Uni and other people have been posting of FB that they got in (but in other institutes) and I worry I guess.

Well done!  Clearly abandoning the Internet for a while was a good thing.

(I would write that as a 2.1 - is it usual to do it differently at your place, 'cos I've never noticed that??)

Re: arbitrary grades.

So due to my depression I just didn't go to class for the entire month of May yet somehow still got an A in one of the courses. I guess if you didn't take the tests instead of putting in a 0 the professor just didn't put in anything. Still failed 2 other courses though so I might not get financial aid again. Gotta go to a doctor and get a note saying I had depression so I can see about getting a re-do on the classes I failed. I can probably do some hardcore studying and test out of the maths course because I only didn't learn one chapter, and the one before that I did poorly on the test (like I didn't answer over half of the questions) but I also didn't study for it.

80% is almost unheard of - I only know one person, in any subject, who has ever got that. 70% is a First, which is rare. None of the law students in my college (there were eight of us) got a First. I think there were only a couple of dozen out of 220 in the university.

Paul, I don't know actually whether it's usual to write 2.i or 2.1 but I prefer the Roman numeral! I've seen it both ways.

Fingers crossed they let you resit, Jace - it wouldn't seem fair to refuse you to retake if you were ill.

And another one of the reasons I want to move to Scandinavia one day. I've been on an exchange to Denmark once, and their education system works so much better than the German one, which afaik still works better than the American one.

I don't remember, if I told all of you people on the forum about the difficult decision I'm currently pondering about. I'm pretty sure I've talked about it with people on Mumble though.

Anyway. As I have graduated at the end of June I'll now start studying Computer Science (Informatik as it's called here) in October. I just have to make up my mind where. I'd like to have a decision as soon as possible, so I can start organising and looking for a place to stay. I have two Universities in mind. One is the University of Lübeck, which is a very small, very modern University focused only on medicine, computer sciences and the stuff in between. I have visited the University already, and liked it very much. Instead of choosing a different topic as minor I could choose between four special topics. Robotics and automation, IT-security and reliability, biological computer science, and media and computing. As it's such a small university the ratio of professors to students is very favourable as well, and I feel more comfortable in smaller groups of people. Additionally it's in northern Germany, still close to the ocean and close enough to my hometown that I could visit for a weekend and keep in contact with friends.

That sounds all very promising. My uncle though, who works at Stanford in a cooperation with Bosch, told me that I should go for a university with a better reputation instead. The thing is, because Lübeck is so small it doesn't have a bad reputation or a good one, it doesn't really have a reputation at all. Surveys show that the students are all happy in Lübeck, but that doesn't say anything about the quality of the courses.

Because of that I'm contemplating going to Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe is a city slightly bigger than my hometown, and the university is rather traditional. It wouldn't cost much more than Lübeck, but the University is much bigger. It has a very good reputation. Surveys tell me that the students there consider it okay. Not overwhelmingly happy though. I would be completely cut off from family and friends. Going home would take 7 hours in a train and 139€ per trip. 278€ for a visit is a bit much imho. My father would probably prefer it if I went to Karlsruhe, my uncle would consider it wiser. I could probably live with it. I'm afraid of resenting it later if I chose Lübeck over Karlsruhe now.

No matter my decision I'm sure that I will always be doubtful whether I wouldn't have been better off with the other option.

I'm not exactly sure what I would like to do after University, so that can't help me here either. My dream would be working in research, but that's difficult and not really paying well. It's especially difficult to work in research in Germany, I've talked about that with two people who do. I'm also dreaming of moving to Scandinavia, I have been for at least 5 years now. In Lübeck I could learn Norse, but the reputation of Karlsruhe might help me more. I'm thinking of maybe going to Scandinavia for my Master's degree already, but that's something I'm absolutely not sure about.

I feel like I want to go to Lübeck while I should go to Karlsruhe. But I also feel like I'd be happier in Lübeck. Having to defend my decision before my father doesn't make it easier, he is the one who would have to pay for it (also by law, but I don't want it to come that far).

Lübeck sounds like the smarter choice, especially if you can start at Lübeck and transfer to Karlsruhe later.

If you weren't planning to pursue a master's degree, what employers thought of the two universities could be important. That you are planning on an advanced degree probably dilutes the importance of that choice. But if you go to another university, would having attended Lübeck or Karlsruhe make a difference on getting admitted to the next university?

I like the idea of small colleges, having flunked out of the University of Michigan, then with a student population of 20k. After 3 years in the Army, I went to a small Michigan college with 550 students and did very well.

If career in research (in industry or academia) is a goal, then you can really use a diploma from a higher rep university. Also a lot of industries recruit locally. You will also get help from the professors (they are known by the local industry so their letters of reference carry some weight) as well as the student unions. Wikipedia calls Karlsruhe the internet capitol of Germany, so...

I don't know about employment prospects near Lübeck. Probably not too dim either (given that they seem to have a lot of minors suitable for CS majors, and those typically are created as a response to local needs).

Geography does speak in favor of Lübeck for you so the decision is not clear cut. I have never visited Karlsruhe, but Lübeck was nice. The first thing that comes to my mind from Lübeck is marzipan. Massive quantities of Niederegger marzipan on display at all the tourist traps :psyduck: Sold with the conviction that if you don't like this, then you are a twit. It's close to the Baltic Sea, which you probably shouldn't call an ocean...

I think you should go with the one that you would feel most happy living at - you will be more successful academically if you are happy and comfortable with where you live. A girl I knew came to Cambridge despite qualms (a very long way from family, and a long way from her boyfriend, and just not quite the place she wanted to be) and quit after a year despite it being one of the best universities in the world.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Karlsruhe is a nice place (my son lived there for a couple of years), but I know nothing about the university - mainly I know it's got one of the better provincial opera houses, and it's where Schoeps microphones are made.  Everything you said seemed to me to point to Lübeck; but then it resonated with me because I've always worked with computers in medicine!  Mention of the computers and biology course also reminded me that the building I work in, which is dedicated to cancer research, has a large section occupied by a part of the department of engineering!  Bio-medical engineering is a thing, and involves plenty of computing - far more than I look after....

Anyway, May has it right.  Be happy first, and the rest can flourish.

I know that feeling of "I could have done this instead", and that doesn't really go away. If I had played my cards right, I might have been studying medicine in Vienna. Instead, I am now in Munich, studying HCI.

My choice of university was simple: I wanted to be as far away from family as I could, in order to prove to myself that I could live on my own. Sometimes I regret that decision, but I have met a whole lot of new friends because of that.

Speaking of new friends: I grew up in Ankara, and all my friends are now around the world. But most of them, I can call and it will be just as if we had seen each other last week. You have to see university as both a place to learn, but more importantly as a place to network. Moving away from home and starting university is literally the best way of meeting hundreds of new people, because you can just walk up to someone and say "and what are you studying?" Works most of the time.

And one last thought: even if you moved away, you're able to graduate in 3 years. You won't be away for too long. If I were you, I'd just go to Karlsruhe and see how it looks like. It's never a bad idea to try new things.

Putting Method's and Masterpiece's posts together (and keeping Barmymoo's in mind) I'd go for the (allegedly) more prestigious Karlsruhe.  If miserable, or not really serving your needs, transfer back to Lubeck (no idea how to get an umlaut, sorry).

People transfer all the time.  It's no big deal.  You may also find out that Lubeck actually has a better rep because it's smaller.  I worked at a very tiny engineering school that turns out some of the US's most desired engineers.  It's name's only well known in engineering circles, though, and even then, only by people in the know - it only turns out 400 - 500 students a year.  But these guys get fought over by the industries!

The programs at Lubeck sound good, and quite specialized - anything comparable at Karlsruhe?

What was the engineering school, Carl?

And as for umlauts, I just copied and pasted the name from Ankhtahr's post, although OSX has a pretty good menu-bar means of finding and placing the character.

So much very this. I'd probably have quit my studies already if it wasn't for the nice community here.
