Nordic combined has always made less sense to me than biathlon does. I mean, I can see how they would think of putting skiing and shooting together,  but cross-country skiing and ski jumping in the same sport… Well, I like watching it if we've got people in it who can do well, but it still doesn't make much sense.

But then again, there are a lot of Olympic sports that don't make much sense. Like skeleton. Sure, let's throw ourselves down an icy track, head-first, because it looks way more scary than going feet-first or, say, sitting inside of a bobsleigh, so of course it should be an Olympic event.

Which is funny 'cause wasn't it luge what killed a dude and all

Also it's not fun to watch unless it's potentially lethal, why do you think NASCAR is so huge in some places

Well, yes, it was luge, but then they made the track a whole bunch shorter and added extra walls and padding before doing the actual races. Though I think the skeleton riders probably use a shorter track anyways, as I read somewhere that they don't get the same speed as the luge people do? I dunno, throwing yourself head-first down an icy track sounds like a really bad idea anyways.

Not that ski jumping doesn't sound like a bad idea either, but yeah. Ski jumping, and especially ski flying, is awesome.

…during practice last night. But it doesn't happen very often, and this guy ended up being relatively fine.

Canada look like one of the poorer hockey teams in the Olympics although they have a squad chock-full of supposed superstars. They'll probably beat Germany in the playoff round but any of USA, Sweden, Finland or Russia is likely to be a very tricky game and each of them could trip them up easily if they don't get their act together very quickly.

Just proving that barely showing up to a race can sometimes end well.

Short-track relays are the weirdest thing I've ever seen. It almost seems like you would need to be on drugs to understand it.

Yeah, big upset for Sweden there but Finland beat Czech Republic 2-0 so they're through to face USA.

Canada were pretty great in front of goal and really did get their act together but i wasn't too amazed by their defensive play. The defensemen were great at supporting the attacks but the Russian goals were soft. However, they shouldn't have a problem with Slovakia unless something really goes belly-up and USA should have no problem with Finland either so a USA v Canada rematch looks to be on the cards for the final.

I keep trying to feel happy for Canada after they once again almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory but then I remember that Sidney fucking Crosby scored the winner and I realise that I will always see the victory as tainted all over again.

It's because people routinely write shit like this: With one goal Crosby puts the Ovechkin argument to rest.

It makes a lot of us crazy. I'm completely unaligned in the Ovechkin-Crosby debate and even I threw up in my mouth a li'l when I read that.

This must be one of those vestigially religious people vs. devoutly religious people things I don't understand. So many of the "Mormons are creepy!" and "Jehovah's Witnesses" are creepy statements I hear usually end up boiling down to "Wait, these people actually practice their religions and that makes me profoundly uncomfortable."

What? You obviously didn't read the whole thread. The mormon comment was about the Australian snowboarder who won a gold medal maybe on the last page. The Sidney Crosby hatred is just a general thing because he is supposedly some kind of God but really he was only a bit-part player in the Olympic win and pretty much any attacking player on the Canadian team would've put that shot away with just as much ease as he did.

To talk about the goal a bit Jarome Iginla made the pass and was superb in every game Canada played, quite possibly the best player in the tournament but you won't hear a lot about that because Crosby won the gold medal. Also, Jonathan Toews had 9 assists going into the final and went on to score the opening goal making him much more useful than Crosby too but Crosby scored the goal. Not even mentioning that a distinctly out-of-form Roberto Luongo in net still managed to concede no more than 3 goals in any game he played making the job of winning the games much easier for the forwards.

This is why people hate Crosby so much. I am loathe to admit that he is a very good player but it is true. However, it is the sycophantic nature of the journalists and the constant whoring of Crosby by everyone he is involved with while overlooking players who are as good as he is that makes me despise him so much.

Yeah, see, if someone wanted to write an article stating that Crosby is a remarkably complete player and passer even before age is taken into account, that'd be one thing. Instead, we get articles where the writers just vigorously spitshine his knob. It's annoying.

I've met plenty of nice individual Mormons, but the church itself is an extremely hate-filled, right wing institution. We're talking about a group that less than 40 years ago, still preached that being black was the Mark of Cain. They are one of the most actively homophobic groups in America and that takes a lot of dedication. So I'm not going to apologize for disparaging the Mormon church.

Somebody talk to me about rugby

Well, in the southern hemisphere the Super 14's just about to start its 4th round, while up in the north they're in the middle of the Six Nations tournament.

I don't really have much idea of what's happening in the Six Nations, but I think Scotland are continuing to suck and Italy just won their first Six Nations match ever or something.

In the Super 14 it's looking much the same as usual: the Bulls (defending champions, from Northern Transvaal in South Africa I think) are sitting on a maximum 15 points from their first three games - but I'm pretty sure all those games have been at home so far. South African teams traditionally don't do too well on their Australian and New Zealand tours.  Two Australian teams, New South Wales (Waratahs) and the A.C.T. (Brumbies, my team) have finished their South African tours early in the season and now face a long string of home games, which should put them in a good position.  New South Wales beat Queensland, away. in the first round, in what's always a tough game - though by all accounts Queensland deserved to win (New South Wales scored a last-second try under the posts). Queensland are trying to rebuild after having been bled dry in terms of player drain in recent seasons, and their new coach Ewan Mackenzie has apparently got them playing a very entertaining, running game - completely the opposite of how New South Wales played under him. New South Wales appear to be showing signs of trying to break out of their typical unimaginative tight-five game, but at this stage of the season it's too early to tell if they're going to run the ball (as they always promise to do) or continue to disappoint their supporters. The A.C.T. are still trying to get their combinations going, but the signs are there that if they can get everything going smoothly they could be unstoppable. Banner signings Matt Giteau (a local boy) and Rocky Elsom should start clicking soon - in fact Elsom already has, it seems, which is very exciting. As for the team with the worst name in Rugby, the Western Force (from Perth), you can basically write off their season already: their big signing, South African fly-half Andre Pretorius, got a season-ending injury before the season even started, and since then it's all been down-hill for the team, injury-wise. It seems like every week there's another two first-team players being ruled out for the season.

I don't know what's going on with the South African or New Zealandish teams. The Canterbury Crusaders are typically strong, I think, and on the other end of the scale the Otago Highlanders continue to suck and the Wellington Hurricanes continue to show good early-season form which almost certainly won't last. I think the Auckland Blues are pretty crap this season, too - a big turnaround from when they were the unbeatable team in the first years of the Super 12.

This season, in an attempt to make Rugby more entertaining, the referees in the Super 14 have been instructed to interpret the laws of the game differently - actually to the letter of the law, to be precise - to benefit the attacking team, instead of the defending team which has had the benefit of interpretations in recent seasons (resulting in some pretty dire rugby). As ever, some experts in the northern hemisphere continue to lambast these efforts, claiming that there's nothing wrong with Rugby that a good 80-minute rolling-maul in the mud decided by whichever team has the best goal-kicker won't fix.

Wait so you're letting something that happened 10 years ago ruin your quality of life? What are you, America? :psyduck:

This is actually the first time I've paid attention to free agency but it's actually pretty exciting! Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor, both talking to Chicago. The Jets picked up Cromartie, and now have arguably the best two corners in the league. Thomas Jones, Brian Westbrook, and the rotting husks of LT and Jake Delhomme are all released. weeee

Oh man I watched some of the buildup to that. It was just last month, too, it was hella recent. I'm sorry we both missed it. I enjoyed seeing Fiji and Samoa go at it in sevens (I think that's what they were working on) and it was the Raddest Shit. These two countries have their own styles of rugby playing that fit fucking beautifully in sevens and it was epic to watch them go at it. Samoa got pwned in the final quarter of the match though, but it was such a close battle for most of the game. Also if I recall there was a fun little ref call where he asked for video playback confirmation on a call he'd made regarding whether the ball was getting forced to the ground when some dude went for a try.

Or maybe that was Scotland v. this one French team and it was reg'lur old rugby I can't remember
