This is actually the first time I've paid attention to free agency but it's actually pretty exciting! Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor, both talking to Chicago. The Jets picked up Cromartie, and now have arguably the best two corners in the league. Thomas Jones, Brian Westbrook, and the rotting husks of LT and Jake Delhomme are all released. weeee

Too bad you picked one of the goofiest years to get interested in it. There's weird issues with the collective bargaining agreement, so a bunch of guys who would normally qualify for unrestricted free agent status are instead restricted free agents, which means most of the best young talent is effectively off limits this year. Boo.

Also, the Panthers are really, really lucky they can ditch Delhomme during an uncapped year. His contract would have been an anchor around their necks for the next few years otherwise.

That said, I find the Delhomme thing a li'l depressing. I'm not really a fan of seeing people fail, and it's kinda sad because everything seems to indicate that he's a pretty nice guy, so it kinda sucks to see his career go down in flames like that-- Nobody really gets a spotlight put on 'em like a struggling QB. At least he's well compensated, I guess.

Yeah, I feel a little bad for him, mostly because no matter how serious the injury it always takes a while to bounce back from one, and he did use to be a good QB. Then again, he is still making millions of dollars, so... meh.

His injury was pretty damn serious too-- Tommy John surgery isn't common in football at all. Pitchers have given people the impression that guys come back from the surgery all the time, but it's really a shit terrible comparison. Baseball is a marathon season, after all, and between the minors and starting rotation you can hide a lot of struggles. An aging starting QB, on the other hand, just gets thrown to the wolves.

As for the team with the worst name in Rugby, the Western Force (from Perth)

Until the Melbourne Rebels show up, at least

No way, Western Force is much worse! For starters, where are they from? The West? The West of where? Secondly - force? What's that? Force of nature? Is that something they have a lot of in the West? Do people often go to the West and say "Look! A force!"?

I mean Melbourne Rebels is a pretty generic name (supposedly it ties into the whole bushranger thing that was a big deal in Victoria in the 19th century, blah blah blah) but at least it's not just some random assembly of vague descriptors.

Yeah but see the way I see it is a good sporting team name should be able to be instantly and strongly identified with a specific place by anyone who sees it. So for instance you've got the Fremantle Dockers in the AFL and anyone anywhere in the world knows straight away they come from some place called Fremantle. But unless you know specifically about the Super 14 all you get out of the Western Force is a compass point.

As for the rest of it, in that other thread we've been talking about how sports team nicknames should identify the team in question with the place they come from. The ACT Brumbies is a really good example of this: brumbies are strongly identified in Australian folklore and cultural tradition with the southern highlands of New South Wales, which is precisely the region the team represents (seriously, go to anywhere in the Southern Tablelands and ask anyone you meet there which team they support: the Brumbies or the New South Wales Waratahs; nine times out of ten they're going to say Brumbies, guaranteed). The South Sydney Rabbitohs are another good example. But as far as aware there are plenty of places in the world that have force. Whatever that even is. I mean if they were from Tatooine then sure, maybe, but they're from Perth. I mean I'm sure you've got lots of awesome stuff in Perth that you could name a team after. Like expatriates. There: your Rugby team is now called the Perth Expatriates. It's kind of like the London Irish.

So why does no-one ever complain about the Western Bulldogs? They're far worse, considering they're from the eastern states. At least the Force are from as far west as an Australian team is ever gonna be. Give it time and no-one will care anymore or we'll pick up a nickname.

Or, hell, Port Power! That's a one hundred percent awful name.

They're not called Port Power.

And plenty of people complain about Footscray, but the name change was somewhat necessary. They were trying to broaden their demographic from just one small suburb to encompass a much larger area. Sure, it's kind of ambiguous, but chances are they would have gone under already or have gotten moved onto the Gold Coast or Western Sydney if they hadn't made the changes.

I'm surprised that Arizona got so little for trading Boldin, but anything that makes them weaker is good for my Niners. Between that and Warner, Arizona's going to have a really weird season this year.

I'm not really sure how much losing Boldin actually hurts them. Fitzgerald's numbers go up when he's a bigger part of the offense and Steve Breaston broke a thousand yards last year. Boldin's obviously an asset, but it's not like they were ever really likely to repeat the 1,000 yards to 3 receivers thing even with Warner, much less a new starter. I could still see imagine them hitting 9 or 10 wins with a more traditional offense and a healthy Beanie Wells.

You know, unless Leinart shits the bed.

Aye, that was some game. I know AC Milan don't consist of up and coming players, but they are 2nd in Serie A and Man Utd. succeeded in making them look really, really average. That first goal (peach of a pass from Neville..) just knocked all the wind out their sails and from there on in it was plain sailing for Man Utd.

Nice to see Beckham getting a bit teary-eyed when he came on the pitch, lovely reception as well. Y'know, befor ethey started booing him everytime he got on the ball.

Also, LOL @ Real Madrid.

Ya know, for the record, I don't really have a problem with what Derek Anderson said about Browns fans. Perhaps it's a bit hasty to equate all of the fanbase with those people who cheered when his knee got blown out, but frankly, the people who DID cheer about it earned some disparagement and they know who they are.

Back on the rugby front, the RBS 6 Nations is in its penultimate week and France are leading the pack with England, Ireland, Wales, Italy and Scotland behind them in that order.

Ireland are about to play Wales at home in what is usually one of the most exciting fixtures of the tournament, not to mention a fortnight ago John Hayes got his 100th cap and today Brian O'Driscoll celebrates his! That is a long time to play international rugby. I'll update later with the result!

EDIT: So, Ireland beat Wales with a convincing score of 27-12, mainly through lack of organization in the defense from Wales and Ireland using that through their set pieces. Some poor discipline on either side, Ireland had several warnings from the ref who appeared to be a stickler for tacklers not rolling away in the break down, but it was mainly the Welsh failure to make any of their massive possession and territory advantages count, and the 12 points they got were from penalties. Ireland could have chalked up at least another 10 points but for Johnathan Sextons failure to convert any of the tries and missing more than one penalty himself, IMO its too early to be benching O'Gara to give Sexton test match experience when he fails to kick so many points.

England drew with Scotland 15 all, which is yet another disappointing result for them against a team who were heading well on their way to picking up the wooden spoon this year, I can't really give much detail on the game because I actually only watched the first half, suffice to say it was essentially a penalty shoot out and if England carry on this way their World Cup hopes are looking to be dash against the rocks.

Italy v France today, a match that at the beginning of the championship would have been a forgone conclusion until Italy decided to make some radical changes to the rugby they play, coming very close on the heels of England 3 weeks ago then beating Scotland a fortnight ago.

Hope that I've provided a bit of insight for anybody interested in rugby union without just rambling on!

Yeah, as Tommy said, the wooden spoon is dead last ie. not winning a single game in the entire tournament.

Today is the final day of the 6 Nations and I am excited! They've packed all 3 games into one day so its looking to be a long one. Wales play Italy first, then Ireland have their chance at the Triple Crown (beating the 3 other home nations) playing Scotland. And then, the one that looks to be the most talked about pairing today, is France against England, although I honestly don't think there's much to talk about considering England are playing at the bottom of their capability and France are completely on form. If you understand anything about the way the table works, understand that it speaks in volumes that France are not only leading on points in terms on matches won, but the points scored difference sees France with something like +64 and Ireland trailing with about +12!

Rambling over, let me know if you guys want an update at the end of the day, I do love to write about rugby!

Also, I've decided to start following baseball as the season starts in 12 days and I've been kind of interested in it since before ESPN started charging for it's televisual services. My Pittsburgh Pirates following friend suggested them, but I've gone for the Milwaukee Brewers since I like beer and also when they play each other we can have good natured sporting banter.

I'd like to point out that I have, at best, a rudimentary understanding of the rules of baseball but figured that if I can pick up test cricket watching the Ashes then I can pick up baseball. Amirite?

I dunno, this will probably make the Storm more popular than ever. They've always thrived on a bunker mentality down here in Melbourne: the Melbourne "Us" vs. Sydney "Them" has long been the mentality of the team and of its fans. This will just give them all a nice persecution complex to go along with that.

I've got mixed feelings about this; obviously, we're talking about massive breaches of the salary cap which disadvantages all those teams in the competition which are trying to play by the rules; on the other hand, I do think that the salary cap unfairly punishes teams that habitually develop their own playing talent, such as Melbourne. I think the NRL should be encouraging every team to develop their own playing ranks from juniors right through to first grade, but the salary cap system only discourages that. What I think they should do is introduce a kind of salary cap "discount" system: players that a club has developed in-house should only have half of their actual salary count towards the salary cap.

(For those of you outside Australia: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/04/22/2880349.htm.)

I expect that most of the core supporter group will probably continue supporting them, but that's not what I think will do them in. Their already low attendances are probably going to drop even further due to the fact that they cannot take the points from any game, even if they win meaning that for the first time in their existence they will not be playing finals. On top of that they will (likely) lose several million dollars in sponsorships and 2.3 million in fines, and they will probably lose several players due to either not being able to fit them into the salary cap  or having the players walk after being dragged into the scandal. Consider also that the new Union franchise starting up in Melbourne that was going to steal members from the Storm anyway, and they've got trouble on their hands.

I fully expect this to have long lasting repercussions for the club, and eventually kill off the Melbourne Storm. The Carlton FC nearly died out after a similar incident, and they are a much, much stronger and powerful club who suffered much smaller fines for their rorting of the cap - eventually it took Dick Pratt funneling millions of dollars into the club to keep it afloat, and the Storm don't have any kind of powerful connections like Pratt or VISY.

And if League lose their already tenuous foothold in Melbourne then it's hard to see a strong future for the game, with the AFLs increasingly aggressive expansion into Rugby heartlands and the increased popularity of soccer.

Hmm, those are all good points.

Lucky for me I think the Storm are a bunch of arrogant arseholes who play an incredibly boring style of rugby league and have been the main proponents in the NRL in recent years of a particularly ugly "whatever it takes" mentality akin to the attitude of the Australian cricket team.
