Leeds were promoted to the Championship after beating Bristol Rovers today.

I hear that your boys have signed Kasper Schmeichel now.  Pretty good buy, I reckon.

This business with Cesc maybe going to Barca maybe not is really frustrating.  Barca have always been a bunch of assholes when it comes to how they act during a transfer period, but this season is especially bad.

It's not really just Barca acting like dicks but the way the media goes into a frenzy any time a transfer is even remotely possible and when it's basically a free for all between seasons they can't get enough. Barca have a lot of money and a great reputation with being one of the world's best club teams so there's always going to be stories surrounding them and considering Fabregas was brought up in their youth system and Arsenal are looking shaky without him once more it's really not surprising that this story has happened once again.

At least Barca don't act like Real Madrid though, buying any player they like then throwing them out like pieces of shit when they don't win anything because they have a dismal defence and won't buy any defenders to shore it up. Seeing as Mourinho is pretty much there though they will likely have to buy a couple after the world cup.

World Cup, World Cup, World Cup, World Cup.

I'm excited.

Looking forward to hearing Capello's 23 man squad at some point today and I'll be backing England during the tournament but think either Brazil or Spain will win it.

Is anyone else excited about the WORLD CUP?

Hells yes. I've always liked Spain since I was a wee boy and thought their strips looked cool, so I'll be supporting them. Win or lose I'm sure they'll play some damn nice football.

Spain were my team during the Euro 2008 cup when Scotland failed to qualify. I only wish I'd put more than £5 on them to win! Bought their strip yesterday as I'm also a fan of their kit.

I'll be cheering England, and to a lesser extent Spain although if they play each other I will back England to the hilt.

I am completely cynical and will not be supporting England because why would I support a team that contains players that I hate during the regular season?

But other than that WORLD CUP, WORLD CUP, WORLD CUP!!!

I am excited for it because regardless of support who doesn't like watching the best players in the world playing on the same pitch?

I'm expecting lots of skied shots and corners going way over everybody's heads because the designers of the Official Ball of the World Cup have sprinkled the balls with fairy dust to make them do magical corkscrews in flight like no other ball has ever done before it or some other dickery just like at the last World Cup.

Also Australia was the first team to South Africa! If this was the Amazing Race we'd already be world champions!

Yeah I can agree with all of that, but it is like a constant barrage of the club managers being dipshits because the club president is embarrassed over letting him go, their players being dipshits coming out and saying things like "oh, he is here for sure" or "he would fit in really well here" or "oh man, I can't wait to give him that first post-game handjob" or somesuch and the team manager saying "oh, we're not gonna pay too much for him".  And then there's Arsenal on the other end saying "hey uh, we don't even have a fucking bid for him yet, what's going on?"

It's all bullshit mind games to drive his price down by trying to make it a done deal before the bid is even in.  The problem is that it's so goddamned blatant that everyone involved can see that that is what they are doing, and people are getting the shits to the point where maybe Wenger's gonna stamp his foot and say "no, this isn't gonna happen", and if that's the case he may as well just use Cesc as a waterboy or a benchwarmer or someshit next season for all the good he'll do us in the state he'll be in.

Fabregas is worth £60m minimum and I'd probably say a fairer fee would be £70-80m.

If they pay less than that, it's literally the deal of a lifetime. Practically theft considering the age and form of the playing they would be getting.

Word on the street (blogs) is that they offered £29 mil maybe plus someone, but not sure what to make of that.  The response from Arsenal was pretty great.

Quote from: Arsenal.com
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is under contract with the Club until the summer of 2015. He is a highly-valued member of the team and part of our future plans.

We have followed recent speculation linking Cesc with a move away from the Club but as there has never been any official approach for him, only two informal exchanges, in which we made it abundantly clear that we have no interest in transferring Cesc, we have refrained from publicly passing comment. However, yesterday evening we received an offer from Barcelona for Cesc and in response, we immediately and resolutely told them once again that we have no intention of selling our captain.

To be clear, we will not make any kind of counterproposal or enter into any discussion. Barcelona have publicly stated that they will respect our position and we expect that they will keep their word.

Whether this is a flat "NO" or a very strong bargaining position is up for debate, but it is definitely The Way To Do It.

It is WORLD CUP DAY! :D

Man I love a World Cup. Can't wait to see Spain in action again as they play truly wonderful football, and I'm very eager to see if Argentina can actually gel as a team, because if they do they could be unstoppable.

Also I will never stop laughing if the USA beat England tomorrow. Make it happen, America.

I want the Celtics to beat the Lakers so bad. Mostly because I have a friend who's an LA fan who insists that the Lakers shoulda/woulda/coulda won in 2008 if it weren't for Andrew Bynum being injured. There should be a law that says you can't play the "Everyone knows they were the best team that year," card when said team rolled over in a game 6 clincher and lost by 39 points.

USA was robbed... Plain and simple. There was no one offside and if anything the American players were being fouled. No idea what the ref saw and by him being completely silent about the call i'm sure he doesn't know either. Yes we should have never even let them score 2 goals and have the game decided by a bad call but it did and it sucks. If we don't make it out of the group stages im gonna be pissed. Granted England is playing like crap so it looks good we will advance. i still hate it being so close.

I always thought it was kinda shitty how so many people would make fun of the guy for some of the ridiculous events he's been a part of, considering the fact that he always funneled that money back to charities. It really shouldn't take a 7'7" guy who's never ridden a horse to start jockeying as a stunt just to get people to donate peanuts to Darfur.

thanks. i'm kind of excited for this year actually, because unless we make a playoff run (we won't) lovie won't come back. it'd be nice to not have keanu reeves as our head coach...

fuck i'll be happy if martz can train jay cutler into completing passes to our team for a change. our defense is in a rebuilding year, too - even with urlacher back and the addition of julius peppers, we have shit and/or rookie corners and lovie's "cover who" strategy. zzzz

if it's not obvious, i want it to be football season very badly.

Sometimes I think he's just too rangy to be as fast as he is and remain healthy the way at middle line backer-- he's like 5 inches taller than Ray Lewis but has always been listed as maybe 5 or 10 pounds heavier, tops. I mean, it's cool that he could play sideline-to-sideline as well as he did, due to being so goddam fast, but I always kinda thought he was secretly mediocre at just filling in gaps without getting clobbered by a 300 pounder. So now he's got a ton of running back type injuries from running around like a maniac and an arthritic back from getting murdered by guards. And I always sorta liked Julian Peterson better anyway.

Urlacher's definitely not the tank he used to be, and in recent years Urlacher's definitely let many ballcarriers out of his grasp. Hopefully Peppers will make our defense a little less reliant on Urlacher's less-than-stellar hole-filling ability, but Lance Briggs was always better at that anyway. Now that he can go back to his original position and we don't have to rely on the flimsy, green Nick Roach to fill the gaps, I think our secondary will be a lot stronger.

While everyone's been distracted by the World Cup, Wimbledon has just hosted the most ridiculous game of tennis ever played. John Isner has just defeated Nicolas Mahut in five sets. The final scoreline: 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68. 70-68. SEVENTY-SIXTY-EIGHT. The game went for a shade over eleven hours, spread over two days.

Unbelievable.

(Incidentally, the Guardian Online has, as ever, a highly amusing live blog of the match, if you can summon the energy to read the entire thing. The match went for so long that it had to be live blogged in two parts: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jun/23/wimbledon-2010-tennis-live & http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jun/24/wimbledon-2010-isner-mahut-live.)

Ah, thank fuck. New football season at last. I hope everybody is excited as I am.

Leeds had a decent preseason, despite a fairly pointless trek to Slovakia and being buried at Bury (ahem) we bounced back to thrash Hartlepool and Wolves (including this strike by the ever mercurial Max Gradel). I know preseason doesn't count for much but we've also  made some decent, if inexpensive, acquisitions and the new team has both width and pace, something we were usually lacking in League One. The defence is still a little bit shaky despite having been replaced entirely but that's sort of becoming a Leeds tradition. I don't think we'll go down and realistically I can see us finishing around the top of the bottom half of the table, which would be a decent outcome for any newly promoted side.

Out - Beckford, Ankergren, Kandol, Marques.
In - Paynter, Sam, Collins, Bruce, Connolly, Schmeichal, Bessone, Watt (season long loan from Arsenal), Clayton (month long loan from Man City).

First game of the season is today at 5.15pm against Derby County. Lots of links to watch the game online will appear here later in the day. Should be entertaining!

And yet the real season starts next week.  :-P

The new regulations on squad sizes and home-grown players in the Premiership can only be a good thing, hopefully with plenty of young players being given the chance to play some games and impress as only young players can. A few teams have been caught out by these regulations, a surprising one being Blackburn Rovers, just showing the fragility of the Premiership teams and how the league needs these kinds of changes to bring it, and I guess the national team, more credulity.

As for Liverpool, this season is already starting on an iffy note, with the many speculative takeover attempts and whether there will actually be any transfer funds available even if they happen and some not very impressive pre-season performances. However, youngsters Dani Pacheco, Martin Kelly, Stephen Darby, Nathan Ecclestone, David Amoo, Thomas Ince (son of Paul), Lauri Dalla Valle and new young signings Danny Wilson and Jonjo Shelvey should all get some first team game time under "Uncle" Roy Hodgson and maybe a 4th place finish will be possible although top 6 is more likely.

Yeah Rob, Liverpool are going to be dreadfully mediocre again this year, deal with it.
