Hey, at least we bring our own players through rather than buying them all at extortionate rates and claiming that we raise them as our own.

United should just not ever sign South Americans. Forlan wasn't that great, Veron didn't pan out, and um...yeah. Anderson.

A li'l bit, yeah. As long as the Vikings have a talented team it should be fun to watch. Still, I always thought the Packers were going to be pretty damn good last year and other than their offensive line, they were. I even felt kinda dirty since Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver were starters on my fantasy team for most of the year. I don't see much reason why they should be worse this year, so it's not like I think the Vikings are an automatic lock for a high seed again since splitting the series with Green Bay hits me as pretty plausible.

As far as the Favre saga goes, I'm not as annoyed by it as a lot of people are, but as a huge football nerd it kinda sucks since there's been pretty much no news out of the camps other than "We really hope he will be back."

I just hope his ankle doesn't give out. The vikes have their bye real early, and that's before they fight the Packers twice, Dallas, New England, and NYG. Not to mention the fact that since GB's looking so strong, they'll be fighting tooth and nail to get out of a wild card spot. That's a lot of consecutive weeks on a flimsy ankle, so unless they can protect him really well (he was sacked 34 times last year) I'd be more than a little anxious.

If he does stay healthy though I'll be rooting for ya'll the entire way, if any fandom deserves a Super Bowl it's the vikes.

At the same time, this means the Bears are for sure in 3rd again, damn it. I would've liked to see a winning record at least, but 8-8 and the firing of Lovie Smith might have to do in terms of healthy optimism.

I'd feel a helluva lot more comfortable coming into the season if everyone was talking about how healthy the Vikings are but that's pretty much the opposite of what has happened. When Chad Clifton got healthy the Packers o-line went from shit terrible to sorta OK and they grabbed a guy who can play both guard and tackle in the draft. And the Vikings wouldn't have beat them twice last year if Jared Allen and Ray Edwards weren't basically stealing Aaron Rodger's lunch money. I guess we'll see.

Clearly, when you get a penalty, up 2-1, this is the mindset you should have:

"Well who should take it? Owen and Berbatov are both on the field."
"Yeah, good point. NANI, YOU TAKE IT!"

Fucking IDIOT.

Sometimes when I feel like being self-righteous I go read the ESPN comment sections on any decision a player makes that's remotely controversial. It kills me how pro-ownership and pro-team the average ESPN poster is and how li'l they give a shit about the rights of any individual that makes more money than they do. For example, Sidney Rice is going to be out due to some hip surgery many people believe he should have gotten months ago. So the scholars on the ESPN comment boards are talking about how he's a moron and that teams should be able to withhold pay from players for games missed if they choose not to get surgeries advised by team doctors within the time frame advised by team doctors. You know, because there is no conflict of interests there or anything with team doctors and they totally have the player's best long term interests at heart. Sidney's decision to go with a doctor his agent recommended wasn't a great idea either, but finding someone who doesn't have a stake in your performance one way or the other is kinda tough as an NFL player, so I'm not about to start casting stones.

Another fun wrinkle: I know a respected orthopedist from the Mayo clinic (he's a friend of my mom) who says that his entrenched private practice colleagues would rather not work with NFL players and teams at all. They have unrealistic expectations on both sides and your average practice wouldn't survive a ruling based on a top player's lost projected earnings, so it's really only a good idea to work with them if you can use the name recognition to attract more clients.

You know, I'm pretty drunk right now, and it occurs to me that I think if I was offered Ndamgahagablablah Suh from the Lions over any two Bears players, I'd take Suh without a moment's hesitation. I mean, I hate to say this, but I count being willing to just crush a guy for no god damned reason while playing an exhibition game for the fuckin' Lions as a plus. Wrecking somebody's shit over a football is kind of a shitty thing to do but for a defensive lineman that's pretty much the job description.

CANBERRA RAIDERS!

They're into the National Rugby League finals for the first time since 2008 and they're going in with some great momentum and confidence: they've won five games in a row and eight of their last nine. They're almost certainly going to be playing against the minor premiers the St. George-Illawarra Dragons next week in the opening week of the finals, and that might normally be a concerning prospect but in fact they've got an unbelievably good record against the Dragons (they've beaten them ten times out of the last eleven games against them, or something crazy like that, and they've beaten them both times the two teams have played this year). Five weeks ago the Raiders were faced with having to win every single one of their remaining games to get into the finals, which nobody really gave them a chance of doing, and the fact that they've now done it is an incredible achievement, especially given that consistency has so often been a problem for the team in recent years (and in the first part of this year). The most exciting thing about the team is that they've done this all with what's probably the youngest team in the competition: they've got so many young players who are still improving and who look set to be genuinely great players in years to come. The Raiders have always been a development team, finding and nurturing their own players, and after being the best team in the competition for a long time fifteen or twenty years ago it's been a long, lean period. The prospect of another "dynasty" just around the corner is so exciting! Even if they lose next week and get knocked out of this year's finals, the future's looking brighter than it's looked for a long time.

Also, they've got Josh Dugan at fullback and he's only twenty years old:

Honestly, I don't know why Minnesota stopped using Peterson in the second half. They had no genuine receiving options and yet they persisted in trying to get a passing game going when their strongest plays of the whole game had been through run.

The Saints have questions over their run defence, and the Vikings have the best running back in the league, it doesn't take a genius to put 2+2 together.

On the one hand, I'm tempted to say that you can't win against top teams in the NFL with just the run. Running Peterson ragged early in the season in a game that I don't really think was as close as the score indicated-- if the Saints had persisted in making it a shoot out, there's no way the Vikes would have kept up-- doesn't really make sense to me. On the other, I have never liked Childress so let's go with him being an idiot.

It'd help if Favre had receivers. When the top receiver on your team is the tight end you need to fix something.
