Yeah, game was a bit of a let down. However:

-It was the first game I watched with my son (10 days old).
-Yay! Football is back!

Other than that ... disappointing opener.

I wouldn't bet on it. He had 19 carries, a few catches, and without Taylor around there's less motivation to swap him out on 3rd downs. Even Chris Johnson didn't average out to more than 25 carries last year and he broke 2k yards. Until the Vikings start sniffing the end zone again you're probably boned.

Additionally the only other game really worth watching this week is Jets/Ravens, and even that's kind of meh. I'll watch Bears/Lions of course, but man.

Also I'm not excited to lose to the Lions.

The funniest thing about the Lions is that I can say I'm optimistic about their odds of doubling that win total without sounding completely insane. After all, that's still only 4 wins.

I'm super excited for football season this year, partially because this is going the best team the Niners have had in years. Our draft looked great on paper and has turned out even better in preseason: a lot of the late round picks have turned out really well too. Glen Coffee abruptly retired to do God's work or whatever, but it looks like we found an even better backup for Gore in Anthony Davis. Seriously, look at this fucking stiffarm.

Alex Smith was playing a lot better by the end of last season, and more importantly he'll have much better blocking now. Between the upgrades to the O-line, having Crabtree for the full season, and a healthy Gore ready to go, the offense should play much better. I think this team needs one more good draft (preferably a corner and DE) before they're serious Super Bowl contenders, but they have an absurdly soft schedule this year and should walk away with the division.

Also Alex, I bet you're happy that the Vikes aren't playing the Niners in the regular season after this:

That's just how Patrick Willis rolls, motherfuckers.

Speaking of sacks, I'm a bit curious/worried to see how the Lion's defensive line will be this year. Even if Suh doesn't make an immediate splash they still added Vanden Bosch.

That was a textbook sack by Peppers, gotta hand it to him. My respect for that guy has always been kinda grudging though since I've seen both too many games where he's clearly the best guy out there and too many games where he doesn't really seem to give a crap.

Anyway, we'd run out of linemen if we had seasons that were as long as that of many other sports. Rugby is also very physical and has just as impressive tackles, but the blocking rules are a saving grace that keep it from being quite so bad, since the players are smaller in general and face less double and triple teams and less gang tackles (tackles are rather overrated as a source of injury in the NFL). In rugby, pretty much everyone is treated as a potential ball carrier and runs with the play until its eventual completion but gridiron doesn't really work like that. Hell, there's outright restrictions on who can pass the neutral zone after a forward pass-- the big guys would be stuck watching the play even if they were theoretically fast enough to keep up with it. That's why there is hyper specialization in the NFL with guys who weigh 270+ pounds and can't run a 40 yard dash in under 5 seconds are considered standard equipment on every team.  And all they do is slam into each other and cut block every down. Autopsies have shown that several football players who died young (again, typically lineman, since they are very heavy men who are also very active) had brain damage on par with Alzheimer's patients, which probably explains why a few of them were homeless or considered unemployable despite being in their 40s or 50s. If anything the seasons should be a game or two shorter and practices should become more restricted. As it is the quality of play already suffers a fair bit due to the injury rates even if you toss out the ethical concerns.

Yeah, if the NFL season was any longer than it is, the playoffs wouldn't depend on who was the best team, just who had the fewest players on IR. As for why every team doesn't play every other team, there are 32 teams in the NFL, there's no way they could make that work on a weekly schedule.

Ha, I'd hardly consider myself boned with Peterson.

Missed that earlier. I just meant you were probably boned if you genuinely expected to see him get that many more touches. He didn't really have THAT many touches last year either, but it didn't matter since the offense was so good that he got to finish off a lot of drives. Maybe they will feed him more often, but I suspect that will only happen of the offense continues to suck. That probably just means an extra 10 or 20 yards a game but considerably less touchdowns, like back in '08.

Congratulations on the moral loss Bears fans!

Dear lord that was the worst call I've seen since the Seahawks-Steelers Super Bowl. What the everloving fuck. I was in a sports bar when it happened and literally everyone, even the other Bears fans, were like "Really? Did that just fucking happen?"

If anyone deserved to lose that game it's us. The saddest part is that it was one of J-Cutty's better games with the franchise. This is gonna be a long damn year.

Imma watch my first NFL game properly tonight, with a football fan explaining it to me. I've had my boss tell me all about the Tennessee Volunteers in college football and I'm slowly getting into it.

Also, Rangers are going to be absolutely and comprehensively destroyed by Manchester United tomorrow.

Jets lose, Ravens won.

All-in-all .... I'm happy with week one.

Bengals lose, eventhough they have two amazing reality TV stars on their team. Colts lose. Always fun to see a Manning lose. Jets lose. I was getting tired of that hype ... Cowboys lose! No idea why people see them as such a good team if they can't even decide to take a knee at the right time ... now,if only the giants could have tanked ... but nothing is ever perfect.

Pats win! (I like 'em). Ravens win! (though, frankly ... not by much). Redskins win! (Though frankly ... not by much).

Have to say, while I fully expected Rangers' gameplan to consist of nothing beyond 'put so many men between Man U and the goal that they cannot see the goal and they forget there is a goal and eventually just kinda wander off,' I didn't expect it to work.

Sunderland nearly pulled that off against us a year or two ago, as well. But in that case, Vidic managed to head one in with about 5 minutes left.

Yeah, Chelsea should do it again. They cut out some of the deadwood, received the (temporary) boon of a fully fit Michael Essien and added that lad Ramires (who will be excellent once he's acclimatised). Even with injuries and setbacks, their squad is very good. When you've got players like Kalou, Benayoun, Zhirkov, Ivanovic, Bosingwa etc ready to come in, not to mention the handful of gifted youngsters they used in Europe the other night, you should be looking at least a domestic double.

Exactly. Their firepower is terrifying; Drogba is a rare example of a striker hitting his peak form at an age when most strikers are either permacrocked or on a steady decline, and even if he loses a few weeks, Anelka and Sturridge are plenty capable of stepping up to the plate. That squad must be the envy of managers worldwide.

Still don't think they'll win the chumps league for some reason.

Far more exciting in EPL terms is the battle for 2nd between Arsenal and Man Utd, and (by far the least predictable) the hoedown for the remaining European spots between Spurs, Villa, Man City, Everton, Blackpool* and Liverpool (listed in decreasing order of likelihood to qualify). Should be a crackin' season.

*okay the table as it stands might not last but if the thought of Ian Holloway tearing through the European elite with a team of rugged journeymen on 50p a week doesn't fill you with glee, you have no soul

Really? Aston Villa and Everton better placed to finish above Liverpool this season? I know the squad is not the best by far but Villa are on a downward spiral and Everton can never* keep it up for a whole season.

*Ok, just that once.

Villa I think can turn it around now that the managerial situation's sorted. Everton really depends on how quickly they arrest the traditional early-season slump and push on. They really should do better this season with Arteta fit from the start but that's just on paper, they always start mysteriously slow.

Reckon it'll be real close 'round those spots anyway.

(also have to admit that's not taking 'pool's new signings into account as I hadn't really seen much of Meireles or Joey C in a red shirt; by all accounts both have started impressively so could be a marked improvement there if Torres stays fit and N'gog keeps chipping in with the odd goal)

...Nah. I'm not a Jags fan. Just because I've heard "Uh-oh Jaguars" (and hated it because of the hubris). Just because Fred Taylor, Keenan McCardell, Brunell and Jimmy Smith were regularly on my fantasy football teams. Just because I've considered drafting Maurice Jones-Drew several times over the last few years.

And just because I know the first joke ever told about the franchise: "Two minutes after the team's first schedule was announced, wags in Florida put them as a one-point favorite over Tampa in their first matchup."

Nope. I'm a Packers fan. Sorry.

cutler was still on the ground more than i'd like, but i feel like if he actually had more time to throw he'd make more mistakes. when he goes with his gut he's great, he has a tendency to overthink.

It's kinda too bad that the Packers are still the elephant in the room though. They could have just stood pat with a nice leisurely home win against the Bills but instead they decided to destroy an inferior team just in case anyone got ideas.
