God, I've been watching bits of the game I missed on DVR and now I keep fantasizing about taking one of our offensive linemen's paychecks and cashing it out into silver dollars. That way I could stuff a bunch of them into a sack and use it to bludgeon them to death. It's ridiculous how badly they're failing to live up to their credentials. And you know what? Adrian Peterson too. It's year 4 and he is still a liability in 3rd down pass protection.

I just read what I wrote and I think maybe I should quit watching football for a while. And drinking whiskey. Probably both. At least not at the same time.

I don't think I'd be able to do either, much less at the same time. Then again, if it meant we got rid of Todd Collins and nabbed some linemen, I might reconsider.

Hey man, you could be 0-5. There's a reason why I'm completely focused on baseball right now.

I am not sure if I'd be any unhappier if the Vikings were 0-5, to be honest. The 49ers commitment to failure this season has been impressive, but the Vikings are better at stringing you along to the end of the game and then punching you right in the dick. Really not sure which is worse. It's really like comparing a debacle to a disaster.

I don't know if bringing back Deion Branch in an attempt to replace Randy Moss is going to work for the Pats, but we shall see.

And more importantly, I will see in person on Sunday. Fun shit!

The one highlight they showed from Branch's career in Seattle was one where he dropped a TD pass. Great job, Pats.

By the way, can we talk about how the holding company that owns the Red Sox is buying Liverpool and I pretty much want to cry and burn all of my Red Sox shirts and hats?

Really. What do I do? My favorite baseball team is buying my favorite football team's biggest rival. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Oh, geez, what's up with you EPL types getting so upset that American sports owners want in on your teams? Look, in America, sports franchises are generally a losing proposition. With the EPL, you guys print money with your game tickets (or whatever you call them). ANY sane person would want in on that.

Uh, what? Aside from small-market baseball teams, the majority of American sports franchises make a lot of money. Just about every NFL team is profitable, and I think most NBA teams are too. If you're talking about stuff like the NHL or MLS, then that's different, but those aren't as big in America as ECL is in the UK so it's not a valid comparison.

You can and usually do lose money in MLB. There are only a handful of teams that are making $ hand over fist, and one of them is the team that you're talking about buying L'pool.

Because under Malcolm Glazer, United posted an 85 million pound loss last year and are in buttloads of debt?

That said, I mean..Randy Lerner's doing a hell of a job with Aston Villa, aside from the KMac/Houllier nonsense.

To jwhouk: The problem is that in football the transfer system is markedly different to any of the sports in the USA. Teams are not franchises that move on a whim when the money from the fans isn't coming in and there is no college system that brings new talent through in a draft to keep the costs down so players can transfer between clubs for millions of pounds/euros/dollars etc. and then expect to be paid a hefty sum each week on top (example being that Liverpool paid £26.5 million for Fernando Torres and his wages are around £120,000 a week). With no salary cap it is important to have stable finances to keep these kinds of players as they are the ones who win you trophies and titles and bringing in debt to start with then siphoning off cash to line your own pockets while the club struggles to repay just the interest on these debts is not a done thing.

Shane: Randy Lerner is the (almost) perfect example of what an American should be doing with a football club. He went to Villa, paid off their debts and now runs the club with stable finances and still is able to give them money for transfers (although not as much as some delusional fans would apparently like). The O'Neill/Houllier saga was coming for a while really because Villa haven't really been going anywhere after failing to really capitalise on Liverpool's awful season last year and with the crapload of bids they get for Ashley Young whenever the transfer windows come around.

Finally the Liverpool saga seems to be over (barring another Texas Court injunction though it's unlikely as they have no jurisdiction here and the High Court has made its decision) and NESV have taken over.

All clubs run their own programs, often called Academies that are designed to bring through the next players for the first team squad but for a team to get to the top and stay there it's generally a case of who buys the best young players from the best Academy systems. One notable exception being Barcelona who have possibly the best Academy system in all of football.

You might ask, why don't clubs just use their own young players, surely it would be better that way?
It's a good question but with money so ingrained into all ways of football now the better teams are the ones that generally cost the most.

As an NHL fan aswell, I really do admire the draft system and salary caps and the way young talent can be nurtured in American sports but with having promotion/relegation so that teams change divisions every season you could end up with a young star (#1 draft pick for example) going to the team that finishes bottom of the league and then doesn't get a chance to play in the top division unless they're bought by a big club which kind of defeats the object.

I just wanted to mention that I'm terrified for Colt McCoy. I understand that he'll have to play the Steelers sometime, but I still think it should be a law that you can't start rookie QBs against a team prominently featuring an All-Pro linebacker nicknamed Deebo. The sick part is that he isn't even their best defensive player.

Do you mean where does the talent come from? Or how do they find it? They have talent scouts and academies which train players from childhood for the latter, not to mention the fact that every few years there are useful tournaments such as the World Cup or the European Championships or the African Championships which among other things are opportunities for players to demonstrate their skills to perspective employers.

As for the former, well - you do realise how many people in how many countries play soccer, right?

I was essentially asking both, but more towards the latter.

And YES I realize that the rest of the world plays association football more than we do in the US. I mean, the only way soccer gets billing on SportsCenter's top plays is if a.) there's nothing else going on in sports that night, and b.) something weird happens, like the goaltender scoring a goal on a free kick.

Yeah. He just looks frustrated, and he's not the only one. There was more than one play where I saw one of our offensive linemen completely ignore his blocking assignment and just hang out. Ugh.

This was awesome though. Especially for the insane block at 0:55.

That's one more game than United won this weekend.

I think we're trying to draw as many games as possible. What the fuck. You get a free kick from 10 yards because of a backpass and can't score?

Don't forget his greatest signing ever: Anderson.

He's played about 105 games for United, and has scored exactly one goal. Compare to another United signing that never panned out, David Bellion.

At Bellion's rate, he'd have 16 goals in 105 games.

What the hell Jags. You had your chance to show the nation that you can be a good football team and you failed miserably. Tonight was your only game in prime-time and you completely blew it. Not by a little but by an embarrassing amount. 3-3 isnt a bad a record to have right now but when those 3 losses points equal to over 70 points you have got to seriously ask yourself some questions. I hope with Gerrard being "injured" Edwards will get to step up. Gerrard has been an inconsistent bum for years and we need to move on. Hopefully Del Rio believes so as well. Sorry for the rant but that game was just painful.

Guys, I don't want to talk about sports but this is amusing me too much:

UNM, the closest college football team to me, is currently 0-6 this season with a total of 279 points scored on them. That's an average of 46.5 points per game. The first game of the season was a 72-0 loss.

It is hilarious because fuck the Lobos.

He left his beloved childhood club for money, you can't really expect too much from him.

I get a bit tired of this argument being levelled against professional sports-people. What's the career span of a professional sports-person? Ten, fifteen years? If they're lucky and don't suffer any career-ending injury, which could happen at any time? They spend their whole life learning skills for a career that's going to be over by the time they're in their late thirties. After that, assuming they live a full life, they're going to have to live another forty to fifty years not being able to ply their trade and having to deal with an unusually decrepit body as a consequence of all the injuries they've sustained playing a game for our amusement. Okay, granted, if the sports-person in question is a professional footballer in Europe then he's being paid way too much - but given the brevity and risk of a professional sports-person's career, I have absolutely no problem with them trying to make as much money as they possibly can in those few brief years available to them.

The general expectation that a player should be limited by his childhood choice of team is endlessly ridiculous even if you discount the financial side of things. Part of Rooney's official line when he left Everton was to do with the fact that it wasn't a club with much chance of contending in Europe - should some bizarre sense of club loyalty really mean that a promising young player should miss out on the opportunity to play at the highest level of European club football, and thus have the chance to reach his full potential?

So dude, you won the Champions League AND the Club World Cup.

It's not like if you go to Madrid or City, you get to play in some wicked exclusive intergalactic club championship or anything.

And then you go to America where you can walk down Main Street of Peoria, Illinois, and no one would know or care who you are.

The Texas Rangers are likely less than 24 hours away from becoming the next American League Champions.
