Well that was the most fantastic game of cricket I've seen in a long time. How the hell can the ninth wicket partnership make up a 130 run deficit, it's absurd. :psyduck:

Anyway while the Sri Lankan cricket team's in Australia let's just take a moment to admire Malinga's bowling action:

I mean what the fuck is that. What the fuck is that?! I love it.

It's brilliant, and it's really hard to play if you're fresh at the crease.

Malinga is pretty much the only person that can pull it off though, it's the kind of stuff they try and beat out of you in primary school cricket. So hard to get anything near consistent out of it.

Nice hair.

I thought sidearm/three-quarter delivery wasn't legal in cricket?

What's illegal in cricket is a bowler throwing the ball. As long as your elbow remains straight throughout the delivery - as Malinga's clearly does - it's fine.

Malinga is pretty much the only person that can pull it off though, it's the kind of stuff they try and beat out of you in primary school cricket. So hard to get anything near consistent out of it.

That's one of the reasons I love it so much. With professional sports these days there's so much orthodoxy, with sportspeople being taught the "correct" way to do things from an increasingly early age, that I just think it's fantastic whenever someone comes along who clearly has their own way of doing things, and is succesful with it.

I still think that Malinga's action is illegal, for the reason of sidearm delivery. I mean, I was always taught that you were allowed a certain degree of sidearm depending on how you bowled, e.g. Fast bowlers should have a straighter delivery than Spin bowlers because of how the arm needs to move to bowl that way and there is always leeway involved but these numbers were between 5 and 25 degrees, not 80-90 like Malinga's action.

To put it in certain terms, it's just not cricket.

Like that technique that cropped up in the twenty20 world cup where the batsman would change their stance as the ball was being bowled, if the player is good enough to pull it off they should be allowed to do it.

More specifically, they needed a 6 to win, which means it has to travel in the air all of the way from hitting the bat to flying over the boundary rope (think home run but there is a rope on the floor to get over rather than a wall) and it is almost impossible to hit a rolling ball for a 6.

And Sandoval gets underneath them and fucks that ball up all the way into the stands for a three-run homer. I'm pretty sure that was the exact pitch where that happened, too. Bad example, shows just how pussy a maneuver an underhand ball is.

I'm quite familiar with "hitting for six" is. I wasn't aware that it was a limited overs match. Unfortunately, that would make a ton of sense in that situation, just as an intentional walk of a big hitter with first base open does in baseball.

If they're wearing colours instead of all white it's a limited overs match.

There is, inevitably, a wikipedia page all about it.

And the Australian selectors once again missed the last game due to their heads being firmly lodged in their arses, because they haven't included Doherty, who was the only decent thing about the Australian team on Wednesday.

Also, for some reason I can't find any mention of Ferguson on the cricinfo page, which supposedly has a full team listing. He was supposed to be playing today. EDIT: Oh fuck off he's twelfth man. What the fuck is he doing there?

R.I.P. Sparky Anderson. Manager of the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers, he was the first to win a World Series in each league, and was the 3rd winningest manager in history when he retired. Everything you heard about him from those around him was positive.

I was surprised to learn he was only 76, since he looked "old" 30 years ago.

Not only is it possible, it's actually not too hard.

Bryan, from all accounts that I've heard, Juan Marichal was an amazing pitcher who had one moment of insanity. I'm not hating, it's just what came to mind when Patrick mentioned hitting someone with a bat.

Quote from: NHL.com's article on the all-star game
"It's an entertaining, fun game and fans like to be entertained by the players, showing their competitive spirit with a big smile on their face," said Shanahan. "It's a matter of us trying to find ways to capture that. The game, it's still going to be three 20-minute periods with two teams and everyone is wearing equipment and using the puck. In some ways it's going to look very much like it was. We know what it is. It's a fun event."

It's probably at this point that the article most resembled something from The Onion. This idea is dumb. So dumb.

This is one of those rare times where I'm thinking WTF NHL?

This cannot end well.

The ONLY way this could even come CLOSE to working would be if the group was playing some other entity, like the defending champion Blackhawks.

I have no idea what to make of this game.

On the one hand, I have absolutely no faith in the Bears. They could win the Super Bowl this year and this would still be how I remember their season:

On the other, thinking the Vikings can beat the Bears would require me believing that the players will decide that continuing to go in to work with Brad Childress is less odious than just rolling over like Dallas. I could see that working for a week or two, but not for long. So while I could see them beating the Bears, I don't really expect that to translate into any kind of playoff run.

I dunno. I'm probably just being a homer. The Bears have a winning record and the Vikings do not. I would consider this a foregone conclusion if the Giants hadn't hit Cutler so hard that I almost thought of him as a human being for a second.

Yeah, he's only been sacked 28 times this season, man up ya pussy!

This is basically a crapshoot of the NFC North. The Bears should be tied for last place with the Vikes and the Lions should be somewhere around 4-4.

Both teams also have coaching staffs on the brink of annihilation. But I think some of the Bears actually have faith in Lovie, who's brought them to a Super Bowl before, so part of me (beyond my bias) wants to say the Bears will come out on top.

Add to that the fact that Favre is starting to look like more of a china doll than Matthew Stafford, and that he has almost no targets in the passing game, and I see this game being a repeat of the Green Bay/New York game that ended up being 9-0.

Bleh.
