To summarise: The entire NHL has gone batshit insane? The Wild beats the Red Wings, Sabres beat the Kings, Atlanta shut Washington out, and the fucking FLAMES beat the Hawks 2-7. What the hell is going on here?

Also the Rangers lost which isn't really a surprise but it still bums me out so I'm including it here.

Just weird that it all seemed to happen on the same day.

That being said, with a goal like this, I think the Thrashers deserved the win.

The great thing about the NHL is that no matter what team you support there are always a couple of great players in the roster. Just using for example the bottom 3 teams right now
Oilers have Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Sam Gagner;
Devils have Patrick Elias, Ilya Kovalchuk and Martin Brodeur
Islanders have John Tavares, Matt Moulson and Mark Streit (ok, this is by far the weakest roster of any NHL team out there right now but I think I made my point)

The Thrashers on the other hand have Kane, Ladd, Bogosian, Enstrom, Peverley, Antropov, Pavelec etc. so they're not that bad a team altogether and being a Rangers fan you know all about quality players underperforming of course.

The great hope in the Thrashers roster has to be Pavelec though. I always draft high on my fantasy hockey keepers so this time I took Halak and Rinne over him but I had him last year and when he gets a run in the #1 spot his numbers can be phenomenal; just inconsistency with young goalies is always an issue and the fact that most of the Thrashers defense sucks so they take around 35-40 shots per game on average.

I really like Andrew Ladd myself. The Blackhawks were fucking batshits to get rid of him in my opinion, and it's absolutely no surprise they handed him the captaincy. Dude's always there in the big games, and his hustle is extremely commendable. Note he got the assist on that goal I posted.

Also, Brodeur's definitely in sharp decline but I see yr point.

Yeah, Ladd is a quality player but the one disadvantage to the balancing of the teams approach is that the top teams eventually have to get knocked down a peg themselves and after the Stanley Cup the Blackhawks were probably pushing the salary cap right to the limit so some players had to go.

On the other hand, Ladd is now one of the stars of the roster in Atlanta and is starting to shine in a way he never could behind players like Toews, Kane and Sharp. He already has 7G 14A in 21 games so he's likely to have a banner season and could surpass both his 17G last season and his 34A the season before.

So it'll only take another 9 months, one retirement, 5 player visits, some pictures of male genetalia, an unretirement, more Tavaris Jackson disappointment, and like another 5 weeks to get rid of the quarterback, right?

Weird things happen over the course of a season that you don't expect.
So true. My local football (NRL Rugby League) team was the North Sydney Bears, perennial losers and wooden-spooners who last won league championship in 1922*, but in their local derby matches against the hated** Manly Sea Eagles, the Bears were transformed, and often defeated their much-higher-rated North Shore rivals. Of course they'd put half the team on the injured list doing it, and then lose their next five games, but at least they beat Manly, right?

*   For American readers, barracking for the Bears was kind of like supporting the Chicago Cubs.
** Everybody hates Manly. I think the American equivalent is "Everybody hates the Yankees"?

To be fair, at this point Martinez is a complete butcher behind the plate. He's only really good as a DH now, and last time I checked Boston has one of those already.

Giants got Huff back, which was probably the biggest offseason concern to me. It's a lot of money, but it's only for two years and they were matching the contract of another team so whatever. Now we just need a shortstop.

Fuck the Dodgers.

Also, it sounds like the Rockies are on the verge of signing Troy Tulowitzki to a ten year extension. Tulo's an awesome player, and shortstop is the new second base in terms of average offensive production which makes him even more valuable, but considering his injury problems Colorado's rolling the dice on this one.

Yeah, they effectively picked up the option on his existing contract and then tacked 6 new years on top of that. They're basically making him into the next Todd Helton with this contract. Hopefully for them he doesn't end up like the original during the last few years of the contract, let alone get severely injured.

Sounds like they need some better bowlers.

Unfortunately, they don't exactly grow on trees. We have the same problem in America with baseball and pitching.

Or "the day when FIFA announce the 2018 and 2022 World Cups".

ESPN seem to think that the American bid for 2022 isn't all that strong. I shouldn't take it personally, but I kinda want to cry if they end up being right. I was only 7 in '94, and my parents wouldn't bring me to a game in Foxboro. Having another chance to see a World Cup match in person would be amazing.

I am happy about this though because there is no way that the country can afford to fund both and Olympics and a World Cup in the same decade with the finances in this state. There is already money being siphoned from grassroots sports and education to help pay for the Olympics in 2012 and I can't even imagine what would happen to them if there was a World Cup being hosted in the UK in 2018 too.

What I've come to gather about Qatar:

-They're not very good at soccer
-The country itself is about the size of Connecticut, with the population of Orlando..or the Orlando metropolitan area or something like that
- It's hot.
Quote from: Jason Sklar as Keith Jackson
It's so hot, the sweat from my undercarriage could irrigate a small radish farm.
-Apparently they don't serve beer there*
-*They will serve beer in stadiums and fan parks, but only FIFA sponsored beer (Budweiser as of current)
-You can pronounce it either kuh-tar or cutter?
-They are hosting next year's Asian Cup, a tournament in which their best finish was in the quarterfinals.
-Has only been a country since 1971.
-They rich, biotch. Either the 1st or second highest per capita GDP in the world, depending on who you ask

I saw something on the news last night about how after the tournament Qatar was going to dismantle all the specially built stadia and donate them to impoverished countries or something? Sounds kind of crazy-cool. Everyone here's bummed out that Australia didn't get 2022 but I'm pretty happy with whoever won as long as they haven't had it before.

As was pointed out elsewhere; Press Freedom Index of the respective vote winners

    1 Netherlands
    14 Belgium
    19 United Kingdom
    39 Spain
    40 Portugal
    140 Russia

    11 Japan
    18 Australia
    20 United States
    42 South Korea
    121 Qatar

Guess Panorama touched a nerve (did anyone see that by the way? hilarious)

And on the subject of Qatar, not only can you basically not drink anywhere, wear revealing clothes or have fun, ever, it's also outright illegal to be gay and women are subservient to men by law. What a splendid country to host the festival celebrating the diversity of world football etc etc

Their stadium porn is terrific though, they must've had a fair whack of oil money left over after the bribes

Australians - Please account for your shoddy fielding thus far in the Ashes. You've all caught balls before, I've seen it many times. This year every time a ball goes near one of you, you act like it's a cannonball made of hot lava and AIDS.

At this rate, England will be retaining the Ashes and then you'll have a right job getting them back in blighty. I'm not sure I'm ready for a world where England retains the Ashes for three years.

Yeah I have no idea where our fielding skills went. At the moment I'm counting on Strauss getting greedy and waiting too long to declare so the Australians can just block and slow play long enough for it to rain out and end up a draw.

We had a draw in the election and a draw in the footy and we'd damn well prefer another draw to where this looks like it's going.

Not quite official, but almost official:

Adrian Gonzales to the Red Sox.

Definitely official:

Kevin Youkilis wins the AL gold glove at third base in 2011.
