Could someone please explain the whole College Football Thing to me ... because I don't get it. There's a bowl selection thing going on behind me and they're talking about computers and rankings and provisional places and ... I don't know, don't the teams with the most points at the end of a season play each other in some sort of super sugar bowl thing? Why the difficulties?
The BCS division is a result of evolution, ennui and money.

Every other Division of NCAA Men's football features a championship (I-FCS, II, and III) that involves brackets and seedings.

The BCS (what was formerly known as Division I-A) decided to make agreements with a series of bowl committees to host games. These games were more-or-less post-season "exhibition" games; however, as the years went on, these games become cash cows - especially for cable networks like ESPN (who, by the way, will be broadcasting about three-fourths of all the bowl games this season). Money begat sponsorships, which begat more money, which begat jockeying for position for better teams and better games.

Unfortunately, prior to the BCS system, there rarely was a matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2. This was because a handful of the bowl committees had agreements between two conferences to have their champions play each other in their bowl game. For example, the Pac Ten and the Big Ten sent their champions to Pasadena every January for the Rose Bowl.

Then, after a great deal of cajoling, begging, pleading (and some would argue bribery), the four main bowls of the BCS (Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta) agreed to host a national championship game between the teams adjudged to be #1 and #2 under the BCS ranking system.

The system has been tweaked, overhauled and derided over the years, but it has (arguably) done its job of producing a number 1 vs. number 2 matchup.

The only problem is, teams like TCU, Boise State, Hawaii and Utah have been on the outside looking in for the championship game. And it is they and their conferences (the "non-automatic-qualifiers" in the WAC, Mid-American, Conference USA, Mountain West and Sun Belt) that are crying long and hard for a playoff.

This has caused congressional hearings, long and loud arguments, and everything else. However, no one wants to change the bowl system as it stands because - wait for it - there's too much money involved.

Personally, I don't see a problem with a formal playoff, and I think just about any college football fan wants a playoff. The thing is that such a playoff would be taken out of the hands of the BCS people and given to the NCAA itself (due to NCAA rules governing sports played under its auspices) - and guess who would get the lion's share of the money from that?

super sugar bowl thing

If college football had one bowl game instead of like 35, and this was it, I'd watch more college football.

But only if it is the "Super Sugar Bowl Thing".

Well done, sir! I thought for a moment of replying to the question, but I was sure I'd have at least a 5-page essay by the time I was done, so I didn't.

What I like is their excuse that it would be to rough on the "student athletes" to play the extra playoff games. But of course, that's exactly what they do in division II and III football, where the players really are primarily students first.

If they seeded 16 teams, you'd definitely have all the legitimate contenders for a title included, and you'd also have 15 games that really did mean something rather than 1 game that does, and 29+ games that don't. This also wouldn't preclude having invitational bowl games for the rest of the schools to potentially go to.

Yeah, the "student athlete" thing doesn't quite fly when my UW-Whitewater Warhawks played FIVE playoff games (including one this weekend, during the middle of finals) to get to the Stagg Bowl.

By the way: the Division III championship is the only one of the three title games to be known as a "Bowl". The I-FBS and II games are simply Championship games.

Man that was awesome. This is sort of worrying me though, because it's starting to feel like the '07 Pats again, so I'm refusing to be too optimistic. Kinda hard to keep that up when they're consistently beating good teams by 30 points though.

Have you seen our schedule this year?

And half of those games we've won because the other team were incapacitated with injuries (Miami, Philadelphia), self-destructed with penalties (Green Bay), or the officials blew calls (Detroit 2x).

Take those out and who else have we won against? Dallas, Buffalo, Carolina, Minnesota.

Yeah, it's more accurate to say that the Bears are better than a lot of NFC teams, which isn't really the same thing as being particularly good. Everything is breaking Chicago's way this year, since the Vikings and Cowboys are a couple of really talented teams that blatantly quit on their coaches after a bad off-season and are only now somewhat frisky now that their coaches were fired-- that's two division winners up in smoke right there. But more than anything, the big thing is that the NFC West is pretty much the turd in the NFL's punch bowl. This means that someone from the Giants/Packers/Saints group (Probably the Packers, and they are very likely a top 3 team in the conference and have given up the least points in the NFL) will end up missing the playoffs despite the fact that I wouldn't trust the Bears in a showdown with any of them. Basically, I'd say that the Bears are probably better than a bit over half of the teams in the league. Once you factor in the schedules I'm not even sure that they're better than the Dolphins, since they caught Miami just as they were stuck starting Tyler Thigpen at QB. It's been that kind of year.

It sounds nice, but in practice you'll still end up with some teams getting the short end of the stick. The season is simply too short and the margin of error too small in football to really claim that these things always even out from year to year or that all penalties are created equal. It's pretty fair to say that officiating helped the Bears to a win against the Lions and a no call on face masking helped the Packers lose to the Cardinals in overtime. That's effectively a 3 game swing given the way division and conference records are factored into tiebreakers.

Good teams overcome bad officiating.

That always hit me as one of the most brainless platitudes ever. Good teams will tend to come out on top over bad teams all things being equal. That's really, really obvious. But to act like referees can't swing games is just non-sensical. Just ask the Sacramento Kings or the Suns.

It's more or less a way for a coach to keep his team calm and focused on the task at hand, instead of on things they can't control.

(because this site had Mexican away shirts for like half off and I can't afford a United shirt right now..)

Oh, yeah. Actual sports. United gave Anderson a four-year extension, which makes no sense to me.

By the time this contract expires in 2015, maybe he'll have scored 4 goals.

News update: Our stadium imploded from an overload of white, solid water, and the local team's going to play their next game outside.  At night.  In Minnesota.  In December.

Since I'm a Minnesotan, and therefore clinically insane, I'm actually trying to get tickets to that!  Parkas (and flasks) for all!

It was, I concede, a poorly worded sentence. I shall be drinking the scotch whilst watching the football on TV.

Though your remark kinda makes me wish that it was them who, you know, got drunk. It won't really impact the Viking's season anymore anyway ...

Hey Tommy, Leeds vs. QPR today! QPR still clear on top of the table but coming off the back of their first loss for the season. As someone who actually gets a chance to watch these games, do you have any thoughts?

I know they're prone to collapse in weather like this, but hey England, domes?

If the only game I watch this weekend is Bolton v. Sunderland, I will be thoroughly disappointed.

Dear Auburn and Oregon:

That glass football's nice, but we've got a REAL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY!

GO WHITEWATER WARHAWKS! TWO THREE-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

Zack Greinke traded to... Milwaukee?

Sorry, what? I'm still in shock.

EDIT: This is about the biggest trade in team history since... well, the Fingers/Simmons trade back in 1981.
