It's only one hour into day 3 of the fifth test in the Ashes

Oops, day 4. Still, everything else I said still applies - even more so now that England have set their highest score ever in Australia and Watson has again been involved in a ridiculous run-out. Maybe he should just stick to hitting boundaries so he doesn't have to run between the wickets? At least this time he had the good manners to run himself out instead of his partner.

Bowling statistics are far too arcane for me to go into, but one simple batting stat speaks volumes about the gulf between the two teams throughout the series: Australia's batsmen have scored 3 centuries in the series, 2 of which were scored by Hussey, while England's batsmen have scored 9, including double centuries to Cook and to Pietersen.

EDIT: and there's no doubt that England are going to win this match. Australia are seven wickets down in their second innings at the moment and still behind by 188, all the specialist batsmen are out (unless you include Smith, but I don't think anybody would), the umpires have offered the English an extra half hour's play today because the match is so close to finished, and there's still a full day's play to go with the only rain forecast being "isolated showers". And if there's one thing that's obvious from the series so far, it's that Australia's batsmen have neither the skill nor the temprament to block out a whole day's play to salvage a draw.

Baseball Hall of Fame votes were revealed today: Alomar and Blyleven in, Jack Morris stays out.

Congratulations, sportswriters, you are spared my wrath this once. Bagwell only getting 40% is pushing it though, that had better be fixed next year before all the really good candidates come up.

Of course he should. I'm saving all of my righteous fury until Bonds is on the ballot though.

Bonds should be first ballot, frankly. Leaving him out won't make PEDs go away and whitewashing the history of the sport just ensures the Hall is some subject that makes sports fans argue once a year rather than some place that'd actually be interesting to visit in its own right.

Woo, Chicharito scores again!

I can’t believe Man Utd a still unbeaten, haven´t exactly been playing like champions.

According to a blog, that chant I couldn't quite make out was "we're shit and we're top of the league". Mwahahahahahahahaha.

I said this in a conversation I had with my dad about the Hall of Fame couple days ago: If you don't think Barry Bonds should be in the Hall of Fame you might as well close it now and get it over with. Joe Jackson and Pete Rose are one thing but Barry Bonds is one of the top three players in baseball history and if he doesn't deserve to be in then you can't reasonably induct anybody who retired after 1990.

I realize I'm not entirely unbiased in this matter but there are a ton of reasons why the arguments regarding PED use and the Hall of Fame are a load of BS and not internally consistent. I'd go into them all but I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in this thread who cares.

Here's ten reasons why England won't win (like we just did).

So you've been reading the Guardian's OBO coverage as well, Tommy? Or has the Daily Telegraph's trademark lunacy and jingoism become reached wider infamy in England now? Tabloids, we got 'em.

Here's a nice piece from the reliably excellent Caught by the River website: http://caughtbytheriver.net/2011/01/makes-you-wonder-if-it%E2%80%99s-worth-winning-it%E2%80%A6/

Agreed. You pretty much have to call bullshit on the "Museum" claim if you're going to leave out a man who shattered the record books en route to becoming one of the most divisive figures in the history of North American sports.

Although Arsenal now seem to have stepped up a gear. Playing some lovely stuff. Leeds are making a good account of himselves so far though. And Alex Bruce is the spit of his dad. Same lumbering run, arms pointing out like stubby chicken wings.

Channel 1 (Channel 10's digital sports channel) shows a lot of Arsenal and Liverpool games, however usually two or three days after the fact. Pretty sure Fox Sports has the rights to live Premier League games wrapped up in perpetuity.

Can we please put some robot legs onto Vermaelen or maybe buy a centre back that isn't as inept as he is french?

I mean, Djourou is looking good, but neither Squillaci or Koscielny inspire confidence.

Yeah, and at least the Arsenal one is wrapped up in an official "Arsenal TV" package of team news to spread it out to 2 hrs.  But, other than the news (which you'd prob already have heard anyway if you were a fan) I don't know why you'd want to watch a game you would almost definintely already know the outcome of.

Couple of heart in mouth moments there. Arshavin royally fluffed up his chance on goal. Leeds are still in this, but with the amount of pressure Arsenal were putting on at the end of the half I'm thinking it's just a matter of time until they score.

Will be gutted if Bruce ends up having to come off as he's been solid at the back so far, but he didn't look good after taking that knock.

1-1, replay at Fortress Elland Road where Leeds will win 1-0.

Yeah, I really don't understand that either, Tommy.  Bendtner and Chamakh have a lot of the same qualities, they're both tall target men who aren't much chop when they're not directly in front of goals.  I'd probably prefer Vela over Bendtner, especially if we're loaning him out soon.  Got to get some mileage out of him before he goes.

Also: yeah, Leeds are a pretty good unit, I'm definitely not taking this game for granted at all.

Things Arsenal should stop doing so much, both in this game and every game:
1. backpasses when the opposition are RIGHT THERE IN THE BOX, JESUS CHRIST
2. Koscielny is not a CDM, and doesn't know how to distribute a ball from midfield
3. playing Rosicky

If we look at the replay I bet one of two things (or both!) were happening.  Song was too far upfield to get back to defend 'cos he thinks he's a box to box midfielder instead of a holding.  Squillaci was off doing something really dumb.

and yeah, I was amused when I said Bendtner was crap and he almost scored

That is one of the reasons why Denilson is not a good holding midfielder.  He doesn't have the right physical presence, so he throws himself into tackles stupidly.

I will honestly take a draw & replay at Leeds after this.  We played shockingly and your guys did great in the second half.  I really think Wenger underestimated Leeds.
