I've been working on some ideas for my room, and this whole business with wires and tension really just opened it all up for me :)

But I really like using bottles as well. Lotsa ways to vary it. Nice bottles, paint, maybe etching, or frosting and putting in some lights...

FUCK! I just threw out about forty liquor bottles that would've been really useful for this idea.

Really?

Well, best booze-bottle-shelf idea I've ever seen, at least. I mean, I'm sure I could think of a few better ideas if I sat down, but that one took priority when I saw it originally.

Well, instructables does seem to have a lot of different takes on things to do with or for booze :-D

This is another implementation, from the same source: http://www.zero-waste.co.uk/projects/tensiontable.htm

My home-improvement activities: things to put things on or in made from things that aren't made to have things put on or in them.

I like doing it this way because 1. I live in a dorm which, while being quite lovely and now very much a home, isn't going to be anything like a permanent residence, and so 2. might be a little unncessary to fork out tons of cash to furnish it when I can 3. do it cheap and get everything to my taste (with a design theme and everything).

Or whatcha think?

Although I'll be taking some of these ideas with me when I finally decide it's time to settle down and get a real home.

I don't know if your dorm has rules against "wooden furniture," because mine did, and it was actually enforced.  Make sure you check on that beforehand, because you don't want to end up having to haul your construction to the dumpster.  Other than that possibility, it definitely sounds like a good idea.  It'll definitely give you some great experience about what you like and what you don't like, and help refine your construction skills.

My best friend did this years ago with Snapple Elements (anyone remember those?) bottles on top of an existing bookshelf.  I don't know if she got the idea somewhere or just came up with it, but the extra shelves are still intact, so they must be fairly stable.

A rule ... against wooden furniture? Why?

Mine has an outright rule on any kind of furniture whatsoever (it does supply antique wooden furniture if you want it though, so I have no idea how that is not equally as dangerous as, say, my beanbag). I'm not sure if storage boxes count but sadly I think the shelf would.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

That's... baffling, to me! Does it have something to do with like having to empty it over the summer or something?

My dorm came furnished (two bookshelves, a huge desk, a drawer cabinet type thing, a bed, an armchair and a regular chair, some other stuff) but I've transferred almost all of those things to my storage space.

I mean... it's my home, why wouldn't I be allowed to furnish it the way I like? *confused*

Ostensibly, it was a fire hazard issue, but all of the supplied furniture was composite wood and our shelves and stuff were normal, light wood; all of which would burn like crazy if there were an actual fire.  I pointed this out to the RA (residence adviser, if your school calls them different things) and he had no response.  Still, he was obligated to make us get rid of anything.

Snapple Elements (anyone remember those?)

We played dorm bowling with those.  I have pictures, but they all turned out crap, because my camera sucked a lot (it was one of the first affordable digital cameras).
