How does the art style affect the story?
« on: 01 Oct 2009, 11:52 »

It's hard if not impossible to imagine the hipster relativity strip with the current realistic Faye. That joke just requires a cartoony Faye.

The skill Jeph has developed with facial expressions was crucial to the Wil/Pennelope story. I can't imagine that story being told in the art style of the first few hundred strips.

How else does the art style control the content?

Gee, Jeph, thanks for moving the discussion in such a ... positive direction?

(I know, only a true "supporter" of the tits arts could do that...)

Seriously, I think this is a redundant thread - we already have this one

As far as art supporting the story, I'll repeat what I said in the other thread here - I don't think "the Talk" could have been given in the artwork of the first 100 strips or so.  It just wouldn't have had the emotional pull without the improved realism of the characters!

Akronnick, I can think of no more appropriate steed for a Knight Of The Dickbroom than a foul-mouthed, perpetually shouting, lust-crazed bird with a scrotum hanging from its chin and a distinctive cry of "Gobble gobble gobble".   --Tergon

Another noticeable difference is that the earlier strips (presumably because they took less time to complete) were accompanied by commentary from Jeph more substantial than "halughalughfff" or "comic comic comic" or "fart."  But if the tradeoff means better and better art, I'm more than cool with that.  (Ever notice how many webcartoonists post a comic that clearly took five seconds to write and draw, followed by a multi-paragraph rant?  Anyone who does that should just get a blog.  Jeph has the right idea.)

Actually the earlier strips took more time I think because he has found a faster way to color them. And of course because he had a lot of practice.

That's one of those "Speak for yourself, mate!" things. To some extent, QC has evolved away from reliance on indie-rock/hipster culture references, and that might make a "hipster relativity"-style joke less likely, but I don't think the art-style conditions the story-telling at all.
