Recommend Some Games (PC)
« on: 07 Oct 2009, 08:20 »

First off, I gotta say this: I am a noob when it comes to gaming. I have a relatively crappy computer, and my experience for the last few years is mostly limited to RTS games. So, I wanna play new stuff.

The only rule here is that it can't be new/top-of-the-line. Processor's only about 1.7 GHz and the HD is 1 GB, but they don't always work up to the potential, either. =/  So, yeah. Fun but undemanding games in terms of hardware.

I guess you don't need a lot of power to play Dyson if you're into a light sort of strategy. You can try the demo of World of Goo to see if it runs. As for older games, the first Half-Life is a very good FPS, and I can also recommend Deus Ex as a FPS-RPG. I'm pretty sure neither will have problems with low performance.

A lot of the games on Good Old Games will run on your computer. Most of them, I'd wager.

To play: X-Com, Deus Ex, Jagged Edge 2, Fallouts 1 and 2.

Whenever this kind of thread comes up, I always recommend No One Lives Forever b/c it's a brilliantly made FPS. So...yeah, that.

Try out the demo for Avernum or geneforge, here. They are pretty simple, but if you like them, you'll like them a TON. It's really either yes! or noooo! for those.

The Fallouts are great too - 1&2 really shine, but remember that they have to be patched.

If you haven't played them, the two first Diablo games are gold. Tons of hacking zombies and skeletons and demons and whatnot to pieces. Great, great!

I'd also like to recommend you to this thread, Blood Bowl is a bunch of fun.

If you like something a bit faster, Cave Story is a great, free game. Seriously, it's got everything that a 2D sidescroller can have, I love it to bits. Google is your friend.

There's also quite a few excellent stratergy games. I'd suggest finding out if you prefer RTS (age of empires, Warcraft 1 through 3) or turn based (civilization). If you've got that one down, there's a lot of fun games in either genre.

Morrowind also shines like a fucking diamond, one of the best RPGs that's a bit more recent than Fallout and System Shock (another great FPS/RPG), but I think your computer can take it on.

Screens, since I'm a nice guy:

Avernum 2 (all the games look pretty much like that)
Geneforge
Fallout (I think this is number two)
Diablo
Diablo II
Cave Story
Age of Empires One, two and Three
Warcraft One, Two and Three.
Civilization Three and Four (if you haven't played them before, you really don't want to try 1&2; too old)
Morrowind, also in [ulr=http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x227/JethroVegas/morrowind9_640w.jpg]Third person perspective[/url]

That's a few. Should take a couple of years to finish.

Gametap is a subscription service that has some pretty good games on it. A lot of shit, a lot of arcade stuff, but there are several gems to be found in it, and some of the arcade is pretty good, has leaderboards/multiplayer

*tips hat*

Thanks very much. I get the feeling that these will keep me occupied for a few months.

On the strategy note, I mostly played RTS games: Age of Empires/Mythology (AoE III makes me sad, as my computer slows to a few frames a minute if I have ships fight each other. Land battles are mostly ok, though. Still, after spending about $70 on the game/expansions, I'm a bit pissed about it. Once I get a new computer in a few years, I'll be able to fully experience it. =/), Rise of Nations/Legends, parts of the Total War series, the Close Combat series, etc. Friend of mine introduced me to Civ III, but I only got to play for about a half hour.

Anyways, time to see a man about a dog.

You guys have no idea how close I came to making a "Let's Play X-Com" thread last week, but then I realized that'd be more time spent on the forum and less time playing X-Com. Plus, you guys are all probably filthy newbs who I'd end up ignoring anyway.

Not even that in my case.

Yeah, that threw me for a loop too; I've got an old AMD K-6 in my closet and that thing has a 6 gig hard drive. It wasn't exactly top of the line back in '98 when I put it together either.

Brain fart. Was gonna say I have 1 GB of RAM.

Although the computer that this laptop replaced was like 6 or 7 years old and came off the self with a 256 MB HDD. >_<  Or maybe 512. Not quite sure anymore.

On Steam they're offering Freedom Force and Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich for $7, and they're well worth it. Campy comic book superhero fun, very much in the vein of No One Lives Forever (and made by the same company, Irrational)

Oh hey you're right. I don't know why I thought differently, probably because the tone and visual style of the games are pretty much identical.

Couldn't agree more. As well as Dungeon Keeper 2, although others may disagree.

I'm gonna subvert this thread just a tiny little bit.  I had a Mac for about a year and I got so sick of it so i've upgraded to a Sony Viao.  And this thing is pretty much a beast of a laptop.  I can run Mass Effect at medium and it's only got a few hiccups with framerate.  I was wondering if there are any other games I should look into.  I've pretty much been throwing my computer through a thing called Can You Run It?  And so I'll throw out the specs that it gives me.

CPU: Intel Core Duo CPU T6500 @2.10 GHz
CPU Speed: 2.09 GHz Performance Rated at: 3.344 GHz
Ram: 4 Gig
OS: Vista
Video Card: ATI Radeon Graphics Processor (0x9553)
Sound Card: HDMI

So if I can get some recommendations of some games that will run perfectly on my laptop I would be greatly appreciated.  I already picked up a bunch of the games already recommended.

Also, I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but it doesn't matter what your computer is like you should try out Sacrifice.

Seconding X-Com, but be prepared to swear at Rookies.
I lost 5 rookies to a single alien today while disembarking from the sky ranger. I literally had 7 different guys firing at this alien. With autocannons. And heavy explosive rounds. You know, the kind that do AoE damage. They're a good weapon for the beefier rookies since being within 5 squares of a HE autocannon burst is about as pleasant as having an M-80 shoved up your urethra, so they're a pretty decent weapon provided you don't give a shit about collateral damage (and I don't.) So after unleashing enough fire power to literally surround the alien with craters, my turn was up and he promptly moved forward a couple squares, threw a grenade, and mulched a third of my squad.

Granted, I know a couple of things I probably could have done that could have prevented it from being so bad, but with that many volleys available I rather expected the li'l fucker to be dead already.

And you know what? I'm -good- at X-COM! I've beaten the damn game on Genius while limiting myself to conventional weapons before, for fuck's sake!
