I, for one, am totally stoked. I love robots and I love fighting. I even enjoyed the recent Armored Core games. Giant robots kicking ass totally gives me a rush.

Plus, I remember back in grade school when I would load out my heavy assault mech with as many energy weapons as I could at one time in an attempt to one-shot kill my opponents. Ah, strategy.

Oh, it's for PC and Xbox.

So I guess it'll suck.

I have mech warrior 4 for the pc, is pretty good.
The voices in the trailer are very similar to those in mech4.

I am pretty stoked about this.  I saw the trailer last night, but didn't see the article.  After reading the article I guess I am cautiously optimistic.  They seem to be saying a lot of good things, but a lot of it seems very dependent on what their publisher wants, and what they can realistically implement rather than what they want to implement.  Being fans of the pen & Paper MechWarrior is all well & good, but being able to properly realise the more strategic feel in a PC action game is another thing entirely.

It actually seems as if they're attempting to do a better job of that than they did in earlier Mechwarrior games, which they already did a fantastic job with. I mean, unless they seriously rape this (which we all know they still have that chance) I don't see this turning out badly.

I agree that they seem to have the best of intentions.  I appreciate what they are trying to do with the information war aspect, assuming that satellites have been shot down and such and that information is limited to what you can scout on the battlefield.  I appreciate that they are trying to make good reasons for running a light mech, as other than speed there was little to no good reason to in the previous series because you couldn't really punch hard enough with them.  I can envision being able to use cover intelligently in the urban landscape in order to harry a larger mech in hit and fade type operations, especially if they lose lock on you when you're out of a certain range, too.

However, even with the best of intentions this could get dumbed down a lot before release.  What we're seeing here looks to be more of a tech demo than anything else, because their language in the interview was very much future-tense, answering with what they are planning on doing, not what they have already created.  They have only been working on this since October last year, so they are really still in the honeymoon period for a game's production.  I'm guessing they are probably still over a year from release, so while I am looking forward to it, I don't want to get too excited due to it being a long way off.

Mechwarrior 4's gonna get freeware'd soon on account of all this. I would've preferred Mechwarrior 2. It was the only retail game on Powermacs worth a shit.

Oh I guess Daggerfall is also free. Don't know what that has to do with Mechwarrior, but hey, great game.

This could be quite, quite awesome.

I remember back in late primary school running around pretending to be piloting a battlemech. Yes, I was a sad and nerdy child.

MechWarrior 4 was pretty damn awesome, though.

I'm a li'l bummed that it's not more clan-centric, even if the Inner Sphere's struggles are where the majority of the setting material takes place. I guess I just always thought the way Ulric Kerensky took care of business was pretty bad ass.

I heard this was a franchise "reboot", which makes me wonder if there's a chance that my beloved Free Worlds League will have a shot at not being totally boned by every other faction within the span of fifty years.

I believe they are still using the same source material.  The only reboot is of the video game franchise, which as far as I am aware consists of them resetting the numbering back to 1 and backtracking to before the clan invasion.

True story, I made a Mad Dog from Mechwarrior 2 in art class out of papier mâché

Fuck I miss that game. This is basically from a time for me when video game purchases would be made few and far between, and video game news unheard of for me. I found out years later they had made more and I flipped the fuck out.

I never thought I'd see the day, I assumed the series was dead. I've only had the chance to play mechwarrior 3 and I loved it, I've got a copy of the game but it won't work on my computer :(. I hope they don't mess up on the controls otherwise I will have this.

Necroing rather than crapping up the other thread.  All they have to do is not do anything that made Chromehounds bad.  Unfortunately if they started in late October and are going for a 3 or 4 platform release we can expect a release date in 2011 at the earliest.  Also, this really, really should be an MMO.  Mechwarrior is sooooooo perfect for an MMO.

Please no.  I can't play MMOs because I hate the people who play MMOs.  I like playing single player for the story, and then playing with my friends in a way that does not involve other people getting in the way of our victory/brutalizing each other.

But instead of gear, you could improve pieces of your mech.  A persistent world would allow an ongoing war between the Clans and the Great Houses.  Guilds and an arena system are already built into the world mythology.

Can't you see how brilliant this is?  So what if you would become that which you most despise.  A small price to pay.

You see, none of that sounds fun to me.  None.  I would be glad if it went on in addition to a single player/multiplayer with friends game, but I just don't want to play MMOs because they are quite boring.

You could be Clan master, a hundred mechs and elementals at your command, ready, nay eager to spray electric death should you deign to unleash them on your enemies.

A MW mmo sounds cool in theory, but I think it'd be pretty shit in practice. Now, small scale competitive campaigns would be cool, and small scale unit to unit combat is actually the norm once you get outside the Inner Sphere and into Clan territories, but you don't need a full-fledged MMO to do that. In fact, persistent worlds make that kind of thing worse; do you want guys going AFK in the middle of push into Jade Falcon territory? Because if people are grinding away to get a hold of a shiny new PPC rather than feeling accountable to their sibko and pursuing a blood name, it will happen.

Oh most definitely it would happen.  On the other hand, think about the joys of playing toward an awesome mech and taking on bunches of smaller less experienced mechs leaving nothing but small twisted blackened shards of metal.  I'm not saying the game would be fun, I'm saying the griefing would be awesome.

In all seriousness, though, whether or not the MMO woulds suck (and I admit it probably would if only because virtually every MMO so far has sucked) it perplexes me that they are not pushing for it anyway.  An MMO means a recurring revenue stream without pushing DLC.  Not pushing for an MMO on any intellectually property that could support one seems like leaving money on the table.

A Mechwarrior MMO in the vein of EVE Online would be pretty cool, because politics, intrigue and backstabbing seem to make up a large part of the MW lore.
