Oh goddamnit I forgot to reply to that PM you sent me, didn't i? Sorry about that. I was actually gonna recommend Ulcerate, but I see you've already gotten there. Great band nonetheless.

Gigan are pretty scary. Some weird, spacy shit. Like Mithras, Hate Eternal and Frank Zappa on a seriously bad acid trip.

Funeral Mist is the main project of the current vocalist from Marduk.  As a whole, it's more experimental than Marduk while being no less brutal and fucked-up.

Oh Yes.... Funeral Mist is the main reason why Mortuus is one of my favorite Black Metal vocalist of all the time. His voice is just monstrous.
Although I have to say that Salvation is the real deal, Maranatha was good and all but it's Salvation that really sounds evil. It makes Marduk sound like happy music, and I like Marduk.

If anyone is interested in Salvation and the rest of their stuff, I can put the albums in the mediaf!re thread  :-)
I post this song just because it rocks so hard...

Back from the grave!

Watain is another Swedish black metal band that started their career off hella raw and brutal, but with their last album they started injecting awesome hooks and melodies into their music.

Have you heard their new single, Reaping death? I don't particularly care for it, not being a big fan of Watain to begin with, but I have heard some folks say good things about it.

Also, just checked out Ulcerate, good stuff, good stuff.

I think I'll make another metal thread soon though, to promote some interesting upcoming releases that don't really fall under the "scary" side of the metal spectrum.

Fuuuuck I love their new single soooo much.  It makes me even more excited for the new album in June (I have a big boner for Watain)

Current 93-I have a special plan for this world
Collaboration of current 93 and thriller author Thomas Ligotti. It's basically David Tibet
reading Ligotti's story over a crappy and monotone keyboard. Creepiest album I've ever heard.

I am so, so late but goddamn are you right.  First time I heard this was on a mix CD a friend gave me and it disturbed the crap out of me.

That being said, I don't know if I'd call it scary; I think nightmarish is more the word.

Anaal Nathrakh is a British band that plays a fusion of black metal and grindcore, and does it consistently well.  So, you know, awesome.  In their past 2 albums they've been sporadically making use of massive operatic vocals (sounding a lot like Ihsahn's did in Emperor).

Anaal Nathrakh are awesomely frightening on record, but don't do anything on stage other than crank out the brutal. They're far scarier when you can't see them so you have to imagine what sort of lecherous trolls are making music like that, with babies nailed to the walls being drained of their blood, etc. But when you see them live and they're just dudes in t-shirts, it loses some of the aura.

Got some real nightmare fuel for you.

Gnaw Their Tongues/Aderlating

Two projects, a one man project and a two man project, using the same bandcamp site. Gnaw their tongues is very good, but Aderlating is straight up freaking me out. I guess it is black metal that eschews all sense of melody, and instead relies solely on texture. Or you could just look at it as noise/drone. Check this out if you like stuff in the vein of Khanate or Portal.

Well, if the only Metal you call  MYPENISISSOHOOGE Metal, REAL Metal... maybe not. but I've never considered how violently music rapes my ears to be how I define whats metal.

It is played Rather metally...

and I think the fact that WOAHDAHBITCHISCRAZY comes across rather strongly on that album. Qualifies it as metal on its own.

Ain't nothing Metal-er than a Crazy Bitch.

I don't think they find it scary,
they just seem to have a general Consensus that if its not some ridiculously unlikeable half assed Folk type indie bullshit. its just not cool enough for their attention. god forbid more than 50 people on earth enjoy the music they listen to.

of course, the hostility on this board makes me Laugh, Loudly... and a lot of us metal fans have learned to just keep our mouths shut. lest the elitists cry.

My point is is that there is no such thing as an "average QC board member" and these stereotypes make no sense based on what the collective population here actually listen to i.e; fucking everything

It's not so much that people on this board are hostile to metalheads, more towards metal that is fucking godawful.

i was thinking about that sunn O))) record where they locked the singer in a coffin because he's scared of coffins and then recorded his vocals and then also drove the coffin around in a hearse for a bit and then khar was it you who showed me that album where the singer wasn't getting the right amount of tortured feeling into his vocals so he started cutting himself and that's the take you hear on the album?? do you know what song or band that is, i googled it five times and couldn't find it. i actually really liked the song

I'd say Weakling, Gorguts and Swans. Honestly though, you can't even compare any "scary" metal to stuff like Throbbing Gristle, Death In June, Gnaw Their Tongues, etc.

i don't agree??? i'm with you that the bands you listed are scary but there is some mortifying shit in metal, like that one record where the rumour is that the dude managed to get such an anguished scream by stabbing himself at the appropriate moments.

I'm not denying that there are bands that do scary shit in metal, I just don't think it can really live up to what bands like Throbbing Gristle do. Though not always traditional, metal almost always has some form of structure, thus reducing its fucked-up factor - the fact that it's hard to comprehend what's going on in stuff like Throbbing Gristle's Heathen Earth, is what makes it so scary. Just my two cents, though.

Infester- American death metal.  These dudes make Incantation sound like easy-listening muzak

Mitochondrion- Canadian band that takes the war metal sound pioneered by Blasphemy (drums and vocals way up front with guitars buried in the mix), and introduces technical + progressive elements.  It's a very interesting album, I'll have to up it later tonight to the mf!re thread for all to hear.
