I look at this site every day instead of actually doing work. Brings me back to my days of living just west of the Idaho border!

I like how so many of the most recent pics come from Florida and Tennessee. I'd like to think there's places on earth where such things are pretty routine, so I'm now going to make the absurd and completely baseless assumption that anyone here from those two states secretly has a stash of outfits like that.

people of walmart isn't just poor people, they really get their fair share of genuine weirdos that i think are okay to chuckle at. frankly i think they're a lot more entertaining than people with bad clothes or hair anyway.

okay so i guess it was mainly just weird cars i was thinking of.

Yeah I've met plenty of poor people who don't have badly dyed green pony-tails and don't cover half their body in fishnet. For obvious reasons poor people are unlikely to be the snappiest dressers on the planet but socio-economic circumstances don't force a person to have no taste or self-awareness.

The concept of "taste" is a luxury. Most people have other more immediate concerns, especially the economically deprived.

If we were just talking about people who'd let themselves go I might agree with you. But we're talking about people who have actively pursued a particular look and must surely have spent time, effort, and money to cultivate that look.

To put it another way: when we make fun of hipster douchebags, by and large we're not doing it because they're probably well-off middle-class folks. We're doing it because they look like hipster douchebags.

Die cheap, with Wal-Mart!

It's a little disconcerting to think that a person can basically live their entire life comfortably with all their time spent at their home and at Wal-Mart.

You are acting superior to the other people in this thread for them acting superior to the people in those pictures. It's all very post-modern.

Also, I first heard of this site in a New York Times article where the article writer took tommy's position, that a site devoted to mocking the uncultured appearance of others is elitist and distasteful. I mean c'mon, you're writing a New York Times opinion piece, do you seriously not see any irony there?

Ha, the fact that someone posted an image seconds before my post invalidates my response.

Yes!

The person who owns that car might not be well-off, they might not even be able to be considered "middle-class". But you do not get a car to look like that by wishing real hard. It takes money. The person who owns that car made a conscious decision to have a car that looked like that and then they invested (possibly a significant amount of) money in order to achieve that.

How is this any different from mocking a bunch of teenagers who spend their disposable income on black v-neck t-shirts, straight-irons, girl jeans, MicroKorgs and AutoTune plugins?

The car isn't quite bad enough to be considered a war crime, the music those teens make is. Even if there isn't a war on.

You act like you never "people watch" when you go to the mall or any other public place. I don't think its self-righteous at all. It's just fun to see what other people wear and how they act in the public eye. Any person that reads a celebrity fashion or lifestyle mag is guilty of the same thing. Not to mention we have a thread on here called fashion advice where people willingly subject themselves to this scrutiny. People at wallmart or any public place are doing the same thing.

That is true. The celebrity obsession in modern culture is disgusting.

It's not. Go and bump the crabcore thread if you like and we'll accuse you of self-righteousness based on our assertions to what you might mean by doing so.

Wouldn't the analogy make more sense if I was bumping the crabcore thread to chastise everyone for being so mean to the kids?

Agreed we maybe get a little to far into their personal lives but you assume this is a modern culture phenomenon. This has been happening since Gladiators took to the coliseum and became heroes and probably before that as well. I'd argue that this has been happening since Cain coveted Abel. It's part of the human psyche to see how the other person is doing and compare them to yourself.

Actually gladiators (and actors and musicians) were considered the lowest of the low in Roman society and outside of performances it was considered extremely scandalous to be seen fraternising with them.

Emperor Nero was a genocidal alcoholic psychopath who nearly drove the greatest empire of antiquity to bankruptcy purely out of vanity but Rome was just as horrified that he openly socialised with actors and gladiators.

Actually actually I thnk it's cyclical. People were not as obsessed with celebrities in the golden age of Hollywood, and hell that was frickin named "the golden age." Overabundance of celebrity obsession often coincides with the decline of a civilization. Of course, there are plenty of failed states with nothing even approximating a celebrity culture, so maybe that's a pointless observation.

You really believe that whenever someone leaves their house they are voluntarily consenting to be mocked for their obesity?

There is a massive difference between having an interest in other members of the species and the disturbing obsession with the private lives of entertainers, going to the extent of stalking them permanently. The enormous gossip industry that surrounds it really is a modern phenomenon by the way, particularly its obsession on entertainers and not on powerful individuals.

Not to get off topic but in Pompeii they have found numerous graffiti with either accolades to their favorite Gladiator their records in battle and even sometimes Celadus, suspirium puellarum ('Celadus makes the girls swoon') their perceived sexual prowess. Everything we basically do now with our athletes.

I agree that obesity correlates to financial status but that has nothing to do with what i was trying to say. When people walk outside they are in the public eye. If they decide to wear something outrageous like leopard print spandex or snuggies or hell even a shirt that says "i fucking hate everyone" then ya im gonna prolly laugh a little. Trust me obesity has nothing to do with it at all.

Who said anything about obesity?

I swear, some of you guys must just be looking- straining- for reasons to get offended on behalf of other people.

When I first saw this thread my kneejerk reaction was to say "oh hey some people have no money it is not their fault that the only clothes they can afford are kind of shabby" but then I actually clicked the link and realised that that is not what this website is about whatsoever. To the contrary, it would appear that most of the subjects of the blog in question put quite a lot of time, effort, and indeed money, into the eyesores documented for our amusement.

Tommy, I really think you are just being obstinate at this point because it defies common logic how you could think that any of the comments in this thread originate from class elitism.

Gaudiness and obliviousness is a malady that afflicts people of all economic brackets, as any trip to the Polo Ralph Lauren section of a department store will attest to.

Fuck it, can this thread be about Roman history now? That shit is actually interesting.

Y'know guys, I tend to read tommy's posts the same way that I sometimes advise taking my own posts. Namely, never take anything I say seriously unless it is a direct statement of quantifiable facts (and even that exception doesn't apply to statements directed at ally.)

Now I don't know if tommy actually wants that, but it sure helps me.

True, but I think the important distinction is that the public's admiration for the gladiator ended at the battlefield. Nobody wanted to know what the gladiator was doing at every moment of every day, who they were fucking, where they ate, what they wore etc. (To be fair this probably has a lot to do with the fact that what the gladiator did when they weren't fighting was rotting in a cell).

Also I guess different social strata paid different amounts of attention that particular taboo? I guess that is a problem with studying Roman history, it tends to focus almost exclusively on the aristocratic class, so that even when you are talking about struggles between the classes in Roman society, you're really just making the distinction between the rich and somewhat-less-rich, or the rich-but-poorly-bred and the poor-but-still-old-patrician-stock.

Oh shit I just turned this back into a discussion about class oh shiiiiiiiiiit

I see that website, and this thread, as part of what New York magazine* mocks as "backlash to the backlash." As in, first you have the rise of Walmart, then there is the backlash to that rise, then there is the backlash to the backlash.

*Why do I read so many periodicals with "New York" in the name? I don't even live in New York anymore!

Pretty much every page of that site I saw had a post which was basically "look, an obese person!" The cars and the bizarre outfits were fun but that got creepy.

True, but there's plenty of judging quite fit people too. Besides all the posts of muscly guys in stupid outfits, consider this post:
http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/?p=5366

While the comment does acknowledge a double-standard in how people would react, still it's pretty clear this website mocks stupid outfits worn by anyone, not just fat people.

Oh I know, but it also does a lot of mocking fat people wearing something tight. Mostly I just disliked the idea that by stepping into a public space you're somehow consenting to people you don't know spending time picking apart your appearance and that there's nothing at all disturbing about the amount of time spent by people on doing this.

I do not think that is why this thread was started at all.
Anyone halfway familiar with popular tumblr sites or list blogs knows how discussions of these turn out. Replace facesofwalmart with lookatthisfuckinghipster or hotchickswithdouchebags or Stuff White People Like or etc. etc. It was going to happen, you just turned out to be the one to bring it up.

Point is your indignation is no less rote than it would be in any of the threads you apparently detest.

Oh come on don't flatter yourself. You make a post like this
Poor people are hilarious.  :-D
and honestly it takes a stupid person not to realize the sort of reaction it's going to get.  I do not think you're stupid. You can say it's a joke but you actually made three posts in the thread, not two. That first post, yeah it was glib. Your second post was less glib -
The concept of "taste" is a luxury. Most people have other more immediate concerns, especially the economically deprived.
Whether or not you're being ironic and skewering the schoolmarmish tone of people who believe in things like privilege doesn't really matter. You're either grossly overplaying your joke (really the first post would've been fine by itself) or you're trying to actually get people to think about why they laugh at the site. The latter is actually a lot less tiring than the former, since you're getting so defensive about it. Then you reply to Harry.

I'm torn.  Do I make fun of people who wear ridiculous clothing and put ridiculous shit on their cars, or do I hate people who do that?  Someone tell me what to do!

Funny pictures are funny and all but I have never gone to that site because I grew up in a shitty rural area with a bunch of people that were complete ignorant morons.  Then I moved to a shitty city and had to deal with a bunch of ignorant people at my shitty job.

There is a huge difference between "poor" people in this country and "poor" people from a 3rd world country.  I don't think we should feel bad about noticing how fucked up they are or just not point out how freaking hideous things have gotten because "poor" people get a pass somehow.

However, since I have lived next to these people my whole life and had to deal with them directly during most of my jobs so I don't find anything funny about looking at them at all.

I don't see "poor" people who we have to ignore because of their economic situation and most times I don't see someone I can laugh at.  All I mainly see is problems and people that need to get their shit together.
