What a coincidence, I was literally just 15 minutes ago showing someone an app I've started developing. Shouldn't this go in the computer forum?

Welcome to Team iPhone Team. It's worth bookmarking Touch Arcade and iPhones Talk right away to stay on top of updates, new apps and for reviews of games. Here are some of my favourite apps -

Facebook - You probably already have this one. It's free and the design is very usable. Chat works even without a wi-fi connection. There still isn't any ads, which is curious. I'd imagine there will be soon enough.

Skype - It's hard to imagine a more perfect convergence of software and hardware. Not only is it free, it allows you to make free Skype phonecalls whenever you are in range of a wi-fi connection. Free international calls on your cellphone? The future is awesome!

IM+ - This one isn't free but it's the best hybrid all in one instant messenger. Features all of the major chat clients and push notification. Works great on 3G or EDGE. Tolerable on GPRS but not exactly ideal.

Shazam - Another great free app. Hold the iPhone up to some music and it will identify it for you within about a minute, even on a GPRS connection. I still haven't stumped it yet.

OffMaps - This one is a lifesaver if you ever go abroad with your iPhone. Unless you are a multi-millionaire, you will have to turn off data roaming whilst in another country which essentially busts the iPhone down to the level of a fancy calculator. OffMaps allows you to download maps before you set off and the GPS beacon will still work even without data roaming. It's not free but it's worth every cent.

Photogene - If you are likely to use your iPhone to take and send photos, this is the best editing software available. Simple, efficient and very easy to use.

Colorsplash - Simple but highly effective tool which simply turns your photos to monochrome and allows you to recolour specific areas to produce surprisingly beautiful, somewhat arty pictures. It's a one trick pony but that single trick is a very good one.

Pano - This one is a complete novelty but can be used brilliantly with some patience. Allows you to take several photos and stitches them together to create huge panoramas. The best thing is you can move people around between photos so it's quite easy to clone your friends.

Flickr - It's Flickr on the iPhone. It's functional and free. Can't ask for much more than that.

Stanza - Free reader with easy downloads and a surprising number of free books. For the first few months I resisted but now I'm thoroughly used to reading books on my iPhone. Great for when you are caught without a book somewhere.

Peggle - Dangerously addictive, perfectly ported to the iPhone. Great game. Melts time away.

Flight Control - Land planes and helicopters on a variety of airports. One of the most addictive games out there, well rendered too.

Airport Mania - Similar to the above in concept but completely different in execution. Every girl that has played this on my iPhone has looked suddenly very angry when I asked for it back.

Blimp - This was an independent game made entirely by one guy. You fly a little blimp around differing terrain dropping off passengers and picking up supplies. Simple gameplay but wonderful renderings and brilliant sound. Playing this with headphones in is really absorbing.

That should keep you going for the time being anyhow.

Emaline - this isn't the thread to be bashing the iPhone. If you want to do that, go somewhere else. Your post is not constructive.

Everything Tommy mentioned is really great - the facebook app especially. It recently got a huge update making it incredibly easy to use and actually enjoyable to use. The Skype and AIM apps are also pretty great. Shazam is really handy and I've used it a bunch of times to figure out what song is playing on the radio or whatever and every time it has been super accurate.

If you're into puzzle games or whatever TanZen Lite is free - it's one of those puzzle deals where you have to fit the tiles into a weird shape until it's all filled. Bejeweled 2 is also pretty fun, but I think you have to pay for that one.

If you're after some kind of notes app - I wouldn't go past Evernote. You can grab Evernote for mac and PC and anything you put into Evernote on the web, your mac/pc or your iPhone, will sync up. It's really useful for keeping your school notes or grocery list or whatever with you at all times.

For twitter, if you are a twitter person, I use Twitterifc.

For IRC - I use Rooms - also not free but it's the best one I found.

That's really it, to be honest, I don't have a lot of apps on my iPhone at all.

Uhm, I am pretty sure Emaline's post was a joke?

Also, I want an iphone, because I have a phone, and an ipod, and combining the two into one would be pretty handy. But I also just like shiny new things, so who knows what I will get when my contract runs out. I have heard bad things about iphones not getting calls or dropping out on the Optus network (which is what I use), so I am unsure.

Combining the two is nifty and all but it really depends on how much music you have.  If it's over 32G than forget it unless you can pare it down enough.

Remote is an app made by Apple which allows you to control the iTunes on your computer via your home Wi-Fi network. You can also set it up so friends can make "requests" with their iPhones. Pretty neat for parties.

Convert is the best conversion app I have found  so far. It does Angle, Area, Data (Kilobytes->Megabytes and etc.), Density, Energy, Length, Mass, Power, Pressure, Speed, Temperature, Torque, Typography (Points->Picas etc.), Volume and Currency with almost ridiculous amounts of units for each category. Nice interface, too.

Urbanspoon is super neat. You may have already heard of it as it was featured in the iPhone ads a little while back. Urbanspoon finds restaurants in your city. It has a slot machine-like interface which allows you to "hold" categories of Price Level, Location and Food style (Italian, Kosher, Fast Food etc.). You then shake your phone and the little slots whirr around and then it finds you a restaurant. You can also view restaurant locations with Google maps, and read reviews on the web. Urbanspoon also has a kind of cool social networking component which means you can share recommendations and read and write reviews for places you've been.

AroundMe is very much like a much-expanded version of UrbanSpoon in that you can view not just restaurants but also Apple Stores, Banks/ATMs, Bars, Coffee Shops, Gas Stations, Hospitals, Hotels, Movie Theaters, Parking, Pharmacies, Supermarkets, Taxis and Theaters. It has full utilisation of Google Maps so you can see locations as pins and get directions within the app, save locations, email coordinates, view contact details for businesses and even post to Twitter or Facebook.

BubbleWrap is another one of those incredibly simple yet crazily addictive apps. It's exactly what it sounds like. Poke at your iPhone to pop bubble wrap, do it as fast as possible, set high scores.

Rope'n Fly is basically Spiderman for the iPhone. You've got a dude who shoots ropes to swing between buildings. Your objective is to keep him off the ground for as long as possible. This app is paid but there is a "lite" version for free.

I Am T-Pain: AutoTune. on your iPhone. Surprisingly high quality, it's actually a strip backed version of the Antares plugin which is probably in the top two for professional autotune plugins. Download tunes and sing along, save recordings, choose the key you tune to. This is a paid app.

Tap Tap Revenge: Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution for your iPhone. Little notes fly down your screen and you tap the phone in time. Plenty of free tracks to download, surprisingly good artist selection. There's a few verisons of this. TTR 2 is free, the others are a dollar or so.

Who cares about carrying all their music around with them anymore?  I mean, I have about 100gb of music and am perfectly happy with about 4gb of it on my 8gb walkman phone.  I really only ever listen to a few albums at once.

I can't remember the name but I like the app where the louder you scream at your iPhone in public the greater the distance between you and other people becomes. I haven't gotten that loud yet but apparently at a certain point you can make people start crying. Pretty sure it's free.

When I got my iPhone 3G, I already owned a Samsung u600 cellphone, a Nokia N810 Web Browser/GPS device, a Samsung NC10 Netbook, an 80gb iPod, a Garmin GPS, a Canon Powershot S5 IS and a Hewlett Packard Dv6330ea laptop. I'd argue that since getting my iPhone, I have dropped the usage of all of the above by anywhere from 100% to 50% per item. It's the most robust gadget I've ever owned and I don't think I could last a day without it having owned one.

I do not particularly like Apple as a company and I do not own a Mac. However, they got this device absolutely spot on. It's a decent phone, an excellent mobile web browser, a truly remarkable GPS, a good MP3/Media player, a reasonable camera and portable reader. In terms of usability and overall usefulness, I'd argue it represents easily the most impressive portable media device of all time. The newer 3GS is better still and I can only imagine what's around the corner.

Personally it costs me exactly the same as my previous cellphone, which is £30 a month, all data connections inclusive with enough call minutes and text messages to last easily a month with some to spare. If you have the money to afford a contract phone, personally I cannot help but recommend it.

If someone makes a better phone that provides all of the above I will buy it and tell other people to do the same.

I have absolutely no brand loyalty to Apple. In fact, this year my respect for said company crashed through the floor for a couple of personal reasons.

The Last.fm app is really handy since I don't have any music on my iphone yet.

Camerabag is a very cheap set of camera effects that make photos a little nicer or a lot cooler, ready to upload or just enjoy on your phone.

I don't know what your equivalent would be, but an app to monitor your phone bills is very handy.

iDaft is infinitely amusing.

I got two new apps this week which are amazing!

Sky TV - Literally lets me watch Sky TV on my iPhone. Great quality and very smooth. Has all the sports channels plus Sky News. Fucking amazing! I can watch Sky Sports News in the shower now. Also, it's completely free for the first three months if you are an O2 customer.

The Settlers - It's an adaptation of the Bluebyte series of the same name. You build villages and expand your territory through military campaigns. Amazing graphics and sound. With headphones on it's actually quite idyllic to watch your villagers hanging around and building things for you. The touch screen implementation is flawless. If you are a fan of RTS, this is the App to get.

I'm not sure why, but iSpy is just fascinating in concept and execution, although the results are fairly mundane. You can look through, and control, CCTV cameras from around the world! Yesterday I saw some japanese people disembark from a small boat, and other japanese people fishing off a breakwater. Strangely relaxing.

The regular old Google App is really great actually.

Open the app, hold it up to your head and ask it a question. It seems to understand your voice around 90% of the time. I've asked it some ludicrously long and complicated questions and it nearly always finds an answer via Google.

doesn't CC stand for Closed-Circuit? Meaning...not connected to the outside circuits? What is the alternative? OCTV? I don't know much about the subject, honestly.

At any rate, that is pretty cool and kind of makes me wish I had an iPhone...until I remember the fees.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

whoah necro but I totally just discovered the best free app I've found yet. It's MyPaint, an app for drawing with your finger. There are a whole bunch of apps like this, but this is my favorite free one (a friend recommended Paintbook, a paid app, and then I started looking around for free apps that do the same thing.) I was initially just after the drawing functionality and it's great for that, but an unexpected bonus is that you can load photos as the background to paint on top of. sweet!
