This one kind of reminds me of something Janis Ian wrote on her blog. She had always been puzzled by fans who would stand in line to meet her, then blather something like Marigold just did and run away. Now, it turns out that Ms. Ian is also a science fiction fan, and a few years ago finally went to her first con. There, someone introduced her to Connie Willis... and she suddenly understood her fans a lot better.

Yeah, the hair color is pretty close and Jeph caught Randall's slightly cleft chin.

Hanners is simply prioritizing her worries. While Marigold is hurt and upset, worrying about her friend takes priority. As soon as Marigold calms down and Hanners is certain she's OK, then she'll be free to freak out about the blood.

When I was Marigold's age (or what I imagine her age to be) I might have managed the nosebleed without running into anything.

For example, the only acceptable plural of "ox" is "oxen"

Wouldn't kill us to use oxes. I'm trying to think of another English plural that adds en after x and coming up with bubkes. On the other hand, we have boxes, axes, foxes, faxes, and taxes, to name a few.

Of course, we need to keep en for children and brethren. Brethres is clearly crazy talk. As is mes and womes.

I Dont get "fans" at all. Sure, theres the whole 'I'm in close proximity to a famous person" thing, but what they seem to be forgeting is the 'person' part. FAMOUS PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE TOO!

Two examples of this are "alumni" and "ravioli", which are both plural, the singular forms of which are "alumnus" and "raviolo". I hear "alumnis" and "raviolis" all the time.

That is why it drives me crazy to see shirts and bumper stickers saying Proud alumni of Such-and-Such University.  I am an alumna, and I like to think my education taught me the difference between singular and plural words.
