After working 17 years of retail (the first 8 of those in toy stores), this is my 2nd Christmas in a row I WON'T be on the wrong side of the counter (the bright silver lining to getting fired last year), so maybe I'll be able to untense enough to actually enjoy some of the season this year.

Shane, Sufan's good, but I'll raise you an even better album.

I also stole this last year from my radio station and by "stole" I mean copied to my laptop. Some songs are not so great, but I think I'd still rather listen to this album in full than most other Christmas collections. I like the Raveonettes one the best, I think.

Oh man, Low's Christmas album is so good. I had it on my computer last year but then deleted it and haven't tried to find it again.

My favourite Christmas music is Vince Guaraldi Trio's music from "A Charlie Brown Christmas".

It's the only pop Christmas music CD that I don't hate.  Speaking of which, who else has a family tradition of listening to Handel's "Messiah" on Christmas day?  I was the coolest kid on the block!

I grew up on Elvis, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt, etc for Christmas. I also quite enjoy rocking the Saddle Creek Christmas cd too.

It's never too early for christmas, apparently. I went to the store on Nov. 1 and saw an entire aisle dedicated to christmas candies and decor.

I'm surprised the stores even wait until after Halloween to start decorating for Christmas.  Does it really help sales?  I personally avoid stores these days because I don't want to endure two months of Christmas, but I guess I'm vastly in the minority?  Everyone I know hates it.  In fact, in my house there was only one day on which Christmas music was allowed to be played while my father was at home (my mother would play it while decorating), and that was December 25th, damnit.

I really, really dislike Christmas. As soon as the carols start playing in stores I get very annoyed when having to go shopping. My mother would make a big thing about how we had to have a tree and decorate it, where we all had to be there to put the star on, and while that was great when we were kids, after a certain age my brother and I just didn't care, so she got annoyed at us. Plus, after a few years of Christmas Day ended in arguments neither of us actually wanted to be there to pretend to be a happy family.

The only good thing about it is that New Year is really soon after that, and once January 1 comes about then the supermarkets start making hot cross buns, so I get to eat them for months before it is hard to find them again.

who else has a family tradition of listening to Handel's "Messiah"

Every couple of years, when my grandmother was alive, my family used to drive from Canberra, where we lived, to Adelaided, where she lived, for Christmas. That's a fifteen-hour drive. When my brother got old enough to drive we'd do it all in one go, starting soon at dawn and ending well after dark, with my mum, my dad, and my brother taking turns to do the driving. Needless to say, it was not something any of us looked forward to. (This was before the days of budget airlines and cheap and plentiful flights in Australia.)

Anyway, naturally on such a drive you do a lot of listening to the radio. And it being Christmas, ABC Classic FM (the national classical music radio station) would always broadcast a live performance of Handel's Messiah. And one year, I kid you not, while listening to the Messiah and after being on the road for fifteen hours, the Hallelujah chorus started literally the instant we turned the corner into my grandmother's street.

It was pretty amusing.

I can find them in two bakeries in Sydney, so it is not a big deal any more (though they have peel in them, which i don't like), but when I lived out of a major city I couldn't find them anywhere after Easter. Also, listening to Classic FM for 15 hours (not even considering 15 hours of classical christmas music) sounds like torture. Then again, my brother would probably say the same thing of 15 hours of Triple J, so to each their own, I guess.

I actually really enjoy Christmas.  This year I am really looking forward to caroling!  Apparently, my a cappella group has one night every year where we consume lots of alcohol and go caroling, and I could not be more excited for it.

Huh. My family regularly does cross-country trips (this being across the US, from Colorado to Georgia, 1500 miles), and we enjoy it. Of course, we usually start out at night, so we sleep through a good part of it (including Eastern Colorado and Kansas, which is the extremely boring part anyway), and we always stock up on books and games beforehand.

We might be doing one this Christmas, actually. That will be fun, as long as we don't hit any blizzards.

All due respect to your blizzards, but I expect if you were doing it in the middle of an Australian summer you might feel differently about it.

When I was very young we did it in a car with no air conditioning. Ho. Ly. Shit.

Eating hot-cross buns outside Easter time is just wrong.

Especially when Babka in Fitzroy makes buns that are even tastier than hot-cross buns all year round, anyway.

The girl and I have discussed it and since this will be our first christmas together, well the first we're living through together, that we should decorate our flat accordingly. Given that we go to metal concerts and goth clubs and the like together we're going to do this christmas thing right. Silver and red tinsel? Yes. Black holly around the flat? Fuck yes. Black Christmas Tree? OH MY GOTH YOU BETTER FUCKING BELIEVE IT!

Someone needs to tell NBC that November 17th is way the fuck too early for a Christmas special, especially one based on a mediocre movie franchise.

I do this thing where I leave anonymous gifts for people I appreciate, mostly because I really appreciate them, and I don't want to diminish the gifts by having me give them (I have a piss-poor self image).  Living on a college campus makes anonymous giftleaving quite easy in practice - all I have to do is approach the dorm room or the office, knock thrice, and run like hell.  Not too far, obviously - I do want to ensure that they've received the gift before I leave forever and make no mention of it forthwith.

Does anyone else do this?  I actually enjoy it a great deal, and hearing the appreciative reactions like a creepy voyeur actually brings me a bit of calm.  I'm going to commence work on them as soon as my schedule clears up, and I can't wait to start leaving them around.

We have pigeonholes which would make that practice a lot easier! It's a nice idea but I don't think giving gifts would diminish them, it's nice to know who they're from.

My mom always made too many Christmas cookies.  By "too many," I mean that we are still working on the previous year's batch when she starts a new one.  She has reduced that number since the number of people she can give them away to through me is pretty much zero (since she can't even get any to me until I come visit for Christmas), but it's still impressive.  It's also probably why I am fairly into baking myself, though these days I don't really have that much time.

We have pigeonholes which would make that practice a lot easier! It's a nice idea but I don't think giving gifts would diminish them, it's nice to know who they're from.

Most of the fun is running like hell and experiencing them receiving the gift, though I suppose the pigeonhole would make it a security that the gift would get to them.
And you must admit that the anonymity sort of adds to the mystique, even if it does beg the question of 'who was socially awkward enough to leave a gift without the good grace of presenting it personally.'
