Ronnie James Dio, 67, has performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He is currently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also includes former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.

DIO cancelled its European tour last week after Ronnie was taken ill. The band's lineup for the trek was supposed to include WHITESNAKE/ex-DIO axeman Doug Aldrich due to the fact that the group's regular guitarist, Craig Goldy, had prior touring commitments with BUDGIE in Australia.

DIO's last release was the "Holy Diver Live" CD, featuring a performance of the classic "Holy Diver" album in its entirety, from start to finish, recorded live for the very first time in 2005 in front of a sold-out London crowd.

I'm not so sure that Dio's presence is quite enough to cure cancer. He might actually have to sing a little bit. As much as I make fun of Dio (a lot), he put on a great show when I saw him, and I'd say that out of him, Motorhead and Iron Maiden, his group was the most musically interesting (though I enjoyed Maiden more, and banged my head to Motorhead more).

Yeah. All of the sources I'm seeing point to Liquid Metal (a Sirius station, apparently) and the metalinsider link. I'm really hoping it is a hoax, but if not, that really sucks. First Peter Steele, and now Dio. Both of them supposedly recovering from illness and then dead.

i take comfort in the knowledge that dio was a part of Black Sabbath. for you see, Black Sabbath has been in continuous operation since 1968, and has more former members than most bands will ever have albums, and they still exist. Black Sabbath is transcendental, no longer merely a band, Black Sabbath is a legacy, an ideal. Black Sabbath is eternal. Dio, Ozzy, Iommi, men die, and in a hundred years, they will all be gone. but Black Sabbath will live on. In a thousand years the legendary Black Sabbath will still live on. I can't remember if he's the one who sang on Iommi's solo records or if that was Glenn Hughes, but those weren't bad. Not up to the standard of Sabbath in their prime, of course, but pretty good.
