I got forty dollars from my grandmother and refused to accept anything from my parents.

My Christmas was pretty sweet.

Um...  Did I miss a discontinuity in space-time somewhere?

I want a new violin bow. One that has more than 26 hairs on it. A brand new one would be preferable. It doesn't need to be expensive, a cheap one that doesn't squeak after I rosin it will make me happy. I'm more concerned about hitting the notes than finding the Perfect Bow Tone right now.

I'd like a pillow. Several pillows, actually, because I only have one and have had it for years and I want more than a single pillow.

My feet are cold. If someone could get me socks that actually fit me, that would be pretty awesome.

Also, some tuners.

I'd have no idea how to go about doing that. The closest music store is like an hour's drive away - where to go for someone who would rehair a bow? No idea.

So I have to spend two thousand dollars on a gift basket for some clients in the US.
This is pretty much impossible. The most expensive one I have found is 900.

Rehairing the bow, even if you have to send it away, is going to be cheaper than buying a new one.  Unless you've got a fiberglass bow.  In which case, just throw it away and buy a new one.  Shit, I kind of need to rehair mine.  Well, I so rarely play arco that it just doesn't matter.

I don't know anything specific to violin bows, so they might generally be cheaper than bass bows (I know the high-end ones are just as expensive, but that's in the $100k+ range, and I'd be willing to bet that nobody on these forums has one of those).  It's worth at least looking into.

I was probably going to buy the most basic level, like, $30 bow. Or, rather, have someone who wants to get me a present get me one.

I spent the first five or so years of learning to play bass playing with a fiberglass bow.  It wasn't bad to learn on, or even to pedal a note at the end of a tune, but there came a time when I just needed to step up and get a legit bow (I was playing a lot more classical, and I was playing a tune for my junior recital with the bow).  It's really not that bad to have a $30 bow.  However, if you've already got a bow that's decent, then get it rehaired.

There comes a point where it makes sense to switch bows, but there's also a point at which it doesn't matter.  I don't know what point Zingoleb is at right now, but I am assuming he hasn't evolved beyond what bow he's got now from what he's saying.

Will keep that all in mind.

Ugh, wish there was someplace local, though. I miss being able to go to a music store whenever I wanted. I really just want to be able to play again, but this bow is pretty far gone. Won't even make a sound when I try and play the D-string.

You could just order a gift basket from an American store and have it shipped to them silly.  Trust me, I can think of about 12 stores in New York offhand that have over $2000 gift baskets.

Yeah, my daughter's 'good' bow was $400 and some change.   I ensure she guards that sucker like her life depends on it.   Every time I see a bow sitting around the house my decibel level goes up about 75% until she assures me that it's one of her shit bows she left sitting on the music stand.

Sort of on topic:  I recently had it re-haired.  $50 exactly.

Sort of off topic-- In a year or so both the bass and the bow get replaced with "college" quality instead of her current "high school" quality instruments.  Budget is seven grand.  The four I've already spent on her current rig... has mostly just gone up a cat's ass.  I'm hoping to get $2-2.5k on trade for her current bass, but we'll see.   The only good thing about the expense of orchestral instruments is that my wife stopped bitching a long time ago every time I drop $300 on an ebay guitar, because seriously-- my expensive ass hobby doesn't hold a candle to keeping the kid in serious-business, planning-on-going-to-Berklee orchestra costs.

I ended up finding a $1000 one at Dean and Deluca and chucking in a few extra things. It is actually really hard to search for places in the US that ship to the US when Google only wants to give you Australian sites, no matter how advanced your boolean is.
Luckily you can ship alcohol into Georgia now, or else I'd have been screwed.

Now I have to find some to send to Canada and Costa Rica. Where is Costa Rica anyway?

A Jolly ball to play with

Oh my god I was in a western mercantile store looking for a Christmas present for my roommate(a riding crop. no, she doesn't ride horses, just men.) and I saw these things and my brain filled with images of horses just tossing around a ball and being happy and I was just like d'aawwwww because it's so silly but so awesome.

Anyhow, all I want for Christmas is Beatles Rock Band because I am a big ol' sucker for plastic instrument games and Beatles music. Maybe Modern Warfare 2 too.

And peace on earth and mercy mild.

I do not have any videos of Ellie playing with toys (something I need to record!), but she loves to pick up buckets, brushes, hoofpicks, and anything else within reach, and then run away with them, or fling them across the pen. :3

But here's a video of a cute horse playing with a jolly ball to make you all go "d'awwwww"

i keep trying to justify the cost with my slim work discount, but given my constant pathetic financial situation i don't think spending $700 on a camera instead of $800 is really that much more responsible a purchase. oh well, camera. at least creepily touching you at work is still free.
