Nnnnnngh, I want to make a decent post in here, but it's late and my mind doesn't want to co-operate. Suffice to say for the moment that Khar is the person I would be the closest to in principle. The top 40 in general is a steaming pile of crap, and I am genuinely surprised if I ever find out that a decent song is in it. That said, it's generally not the music itself that makes me so angry, more the machinery that churns the whole process out.

some people, sure.  but you can't deny there do exist people who rage about mainstream music and hollywood but don't really give a crap about food and drug issues.  a lot of people aren't even aware that the drug industry is so massively fucked up and are perfectly willing to take their prozac/zoloft/lexapro because it "makes them feel better" without contextualizing or even considering the possible underlying causes making them feel miserable in the first place.  shit, there are people who believe the propaganda that those drugs "fix chemical imbalances" like lithium does and therefore there isn't an external reason they feel like shit.

food industry is even more toned-down in my experience, from living with some hardcore activists over the past several years "food industry" tends to be way down on their list of Stuff To Worry About.  they tend to get more angry at wal-mart than mcdonald's.

Also, Prozac is an SSRI so if you're having problems with low serotonin levels it could fix a chemical imbalance. Depression isn't necessarily caused by external causes. They're massively over-prescribed in a dangerous way, but it's not like they have no therapeutic value or are just used to pacify people.

They're massively over prescribed so that's hardly surprising, if you give a drug to people it isn't suitable for you'll see poor results. There is no way of increasing seratonin levels that is effective for all patients, therefore it makes sense for people to have a number of options and SSRIs in many cases do exactly what you claimed they didn't, alter the balance of chemicals in the body. Just because a drug has been misused doesn't mean it has no value and should be dismissed.

For the record, the "sigh" was me finally getting fed up with zerodrone/Jackie Blue and banning him.

The REASON I banned him is not that he is unhappy with the comic, or that he had criticism. It was that he had the sheer GALL to assume that he knew my motivations, state of mind, and feeling towards my own work. He put words in my mouth, he was a condescending prick, he's done it before and been warned, and I got sick of it, so he's gone.

in point of fact, jackie blue was not banned.  his IP was banned which means that i, his sister who usually lives with him, as well as his roommates, were also banned because we share a network.  he sent a cordial email to you, jeph, on my behalf, asking to simply ban him and not punish everyone he lives with as well.  that email was never replied to (did you even read it?)

also, he was never warned, definitely not in the sense of "stop talking about such and such or i will ban you".  if he had been warned as such then he would have went back to the music section, where 99.99% of his posts exist.  of the 3,000+ posts of his, only 180 or so were in the comic discussion forum, and of those, less than a dozen were posts that you said anything negative about.

there are people on here who are far bigger pricks than jackie.  they just aren't pricks to you, so you let it slide.  jackie was a very good contributor to the music forum and to ban him from everything, including that, without any real or specific warning, is you, mr. jacques, being a prick.  of course you have the right to be a prick on your own website, but it doesn't change the prick-ness of it.

I always appreciated his contributions to the music sub-forum and I never saw his comments in the comic discussion sub-forum because There Be Dragons. Comic discussion aside, I don't think he was as much of a dick as people made him out to be. I think people on this forum just have an extremely low tolerance for people who don't agree with them or have opinions that offend them.

i'm biased and i am not my brother's keeper and blah blah blah but i read just about everything he posted from mid-'07 thru being banned, when i was still lurking, and i think you're remembering a handful of "bad" posts out of a couple thousand "good" ones.  i think that's a pretty good ratio and 99% of the time he was just being funny or laid-back or both.  maybe it wasn't apparent if you don't know him in real life, but he certainly had a lot of "friends" on here who thought he was a pretty nice guy.

Pretty much everyone on this forum who has ever had the capacity to ban people have in the past done so with less provocation that Jackie showed.  I'm pretty sure Ashton hasn't, but that is because he's a very hands-off local admin (which is a good thing).  Not sure if Dan ever banned someone without good reason either, but he wasn't an admin for very long anyway.

I quite liked zerodrone, he hated Richard Dawkins about as much as I do. He could be a little obnoxious at times but he was no worse than quite a few other people around here (myself included). Mostly he was fine, and I enjoyed quite a bit of what he wrote even when I disagreed.
