Music Charities
« on: 13 Dec 2009, 07:09 »

In the past, I've given some money to a charity called Guitars Not Guns.  Specifically, the National Capital Area Chapter.

Last night, I was somewhere between being a volunteer for them and just someone helping out one of the event organizers and I spent a lot of time talking with the guy who runs this particular chapter of this particular charity.  I'm really pretty impressed by what they do trying to get music to kids who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity.

I've been thinking a lot lately about simplifying my life some and spending more time giving back than working, and I'm looking to maximize impact for my effort.  Because there are so many worthwhile charities out there that need people, I'm really trying to focus on things that I'm passionate about.  One of those things, of course, is music.

Is anybody here involved in a music related charity?  If so, I'd like to check them out.  Tell me about them, point me in the right direction.  Maybe there is something I can do to help, even if it's just push the 'donate now' button on their webpage.

Kinda depends what you mean by music related. You're not talking charity gigs through which money is raised, I take it?

Benefit gigs are certainly something I would (and have) participated in.  I figure there are other things out there though that are in some way more directly "tied" to the music in some form.  I figure there have got to be some foundations out there that do things like GnG, and if someone here participates in that, I'd be interested in knowing about it.

Fucked Up just released their version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" featuring Yo La Tengo, Tegan & Sara, Kevin Drew, etc. to raise money for 3 different domestic abuse response charities in Canadania. The song's kind of a mess but it's a good cause.
