I have one of these and she is a great dog. She was a drug dog back in her hay day when she was young and active and sexy but now she is old and lazy but still really smart.

Could it have been a German Shepherd mixed with something bigger, like a Great Dane or an Irish Wolfhound? The dog I mentioned that was a cross between an American Eskimo dog and a German Shepherd looked quite a bit like a small German Sheperd except for thicker chest fur, if it got its fur and ears from a German Shepherd and its size from a Wolfhound, it could look pretty similar.

My old neighbour when I was a kid had one, one of the first Belgian Shepherds in Australia it was said. They're great dogs - my neighbour's dog looked and sounded terrifying but he was the gentlest dog I've ever met.

My lady-acquaintance and I (if ever able to afford the upkeep involved in having a pet dog) would opt immediately for the Leonberger.
Though, due to us seeing an enormous and black-nosed example of the dog before knowing the name, and having to think one up on the spot, the breed shall always be known to us as "Furry Nose-Bears"
