Stooges playing Raw Power? I'm intrigued and aroused.

Incidentally I assumed that the Stooges were gonna call it quits after Ron Asheton passed away.

So sayeth the Wiki:

Quote
In a May 2009 interview, Pop announced his plans to join with Watt, Scott Asheton, Mackay and former guitarist James Williamson and perform Raw Power as "Iggy and the Stooges", with an openness to future projects with this lineup.[18][19] Pop stated that "although 'the Stooges' died with Ron Asheton, there is still 'Iggy and the Stooges'".[20

This kind of made me say "eww"

Oh SHIT. I may have to do this.

I'd say last year's was better, cos Boris played Flood in it's entirety, but then Deerhoof played.

While I feel to an extent this isn't fair on Ron's memory, at the same time Ron was hugely marginalised in the 'Iggy and the...' line-up in the first place. So having James back in on guitar actually sort of makes sense, it's just an extremely morbid sense.

God I'm still so down for this.

I'm planing to go this year. I'll be a civilian by then and I've saved up just enough to get me there. It's a bitch to find accommodations but I guess it'll work out eventually.

Also, I saw the Stooges with Ron Asheton and Mike Watt a couple of years ago and it was probably the best concert I've ever been to.

While I saw the logic in it from the start, it still strikes me as a bit of a semantic wriggle, claiming that you can't have "The Stooges" without Ron, but you can have "Iggy and". I guess it depends on whether or not you personally define "The Stooges" and "Iggy and the Stooges" as separate entities. Honestly if they'd never said Ron was irreplaceable I probably wouldn't have a problem. And of course it's not enough of a problem to not make seeing them an extremely inviting prospect, particularly seeing as I didn't see the Asheton lineup when they played at the Big Day Out three years ago (another one of those situations where I only got into the band after they'd been, natch)

Of course one might find similar problems with the reunion of Sleep, what with supposed tension between Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius after the latter's departure from Om.

Scott Asheton's still alive, and he's still hungry. He was pretty much the only good thing about The Weirdness, if there was a good thing about it. If he's okay with it I am. Besides, I think Williamson gets short shrift in general, given his reputation as a supposed pretender to Ron Asheton's throne. He's a pretty good guitarist.

It is just semantics, but I still definitely consider 'Iggy and the' to be basically a separate entity. Different name, different line-up, different band; if only one of those was true then I'd reconsider. Three of the members were the same, yes, but Ron was reluctantly playing bass and as such it was virtually pointless him being involved at all. That album was not really about him, but Iggy and Williamson. If Ron had played guitar on the album and they'd replaced him with an unknown entity, I'd be less understanding.

I'm looking at getting accommodation either at a Howard Johnson in Liberty, or a Day's Inn in Wurtsboro, both of which cost US$55/night and are about 15/20 minutes drive away from Kutsher's Country Club, where the fest is being held (the links take you to Google Maps directions from the respective accommodation to Kutsher's).

There is also a campground that the ATP site recommended, which is $25/night and 4 minutes drive/32 minutes walk from Kutsher's, if you didn't mind roughing it.

Roughing it is fine by me. I'm pretty sure they have a few of 4-5 person rooms still available at Kutsher's. There's also The Raleigh hotel although I've been warned about staying there.

Meanwhile I'm trying to find a few more people who'd go with me but nobody's into it as much as I am.

I need to set a few more things straight (tickets to new york, the grant money I'm supposed to get in July) but right now I'm 90% sure I'm going.

The Kutsher's and Raleigh deals provided through ATP are a fucking rort, there's no way I'm going with that. US$150 per person for three nights. For the "inconvenience" of having to drive 15 minutes each way there's the two places I found for $165 for three nights, between two, not to mention the camping ground. It just doesn't really make sense to me. Not to mention having to have between 3-7 people in a room. No thanks.

Retrospectre, hopefully they'll keep having ATP's in Aus (like the Nick Cave one last year) so at least you won't have to fly halfway round the world for it, just the other side of the country.

I guess you're right. Look's like I might have to rough it. I'm not sure I'll have the $165 after the ATP ticket and the plane tickets, so $25 a night sounds pretty sweet.

between the prohibitive cost of tickets, the fact that I can't drive, and the fact that the only people even close to NYC that I know live in Rochester... there's no way I can go.

edit: actually I'm still more jealous of the Netherlands for getting Roadburn, but this is pretty awesome too.

When I saw Iggy & The Stooges a couple of years ago it was at this concert festival thing where there was a giant area for VIP in between people who were there to watch Iggy and the stage. It was filled with people wearing fancy suits. They were rushed by the people who were there to rock, who then also rushed the stage. The security guards tried to interfere but Mr. Pop told them to 'let the fuckers on'*.

*I'm not sure that's exactly what he said, but it was close.
