On the more serious side, this really makes me think of John Cage's work with chance- I Ching and all that.  It removes the taste of the composer from compositional choices, which is at once freeing and controlling in a weird way. You'd have to carefully design the setup in order to guarantee that the end result is interesting, hence, the guitars: If it's loud enough, it's bound to be interesting, right? I'm not sure, but I like the idea. Incidentally that's how I feel about Cage.

I doubt it's very loud really, since those guitar's aren't drowning out the birdsong on the recording. It looks interesting, but like most installations it's hard to know if the idea translates into a piece that really works without seeing it.

It couldn't be too loud or it'd scare the birds away.

I thought this was going to be something out in a field with wild birds, but given that all the birds are zebra finches, that's obviously not the case. Disappointing.

This is quite interesting from an ornithological perspective. Not that I can give one. The best part was probably the one bird with the stick, which seemed to be either trying to make a nest or find out what the stick did to the noise. The other nice part was the chord that one bird played when taking off.

I don't find it particularly artistic, though, on the whole. It seems a little too clinical for that. If it was outside in fields like Inlander thought, it would be more natural. I don't  know why exactly this makes it more artistic to me. It just seems more in line with what the artist was trying to achieve in the first place.

I'm glad you said it, Khar, because I was going to but I don't know Jackie or his alleged sister well enough to give him/them too hard of a time about it. But my god, whenever someone puts "art" in quotes like that..... :x....well let's just say that I don't much care for it at all.

I don't see how you can doubt the artistry of this.

As for outdoor use, I can easily see why that would be rejected (apart from the fact this is a piece done especially for an exhibition, and was obviously designed for the space).

First there is practicality. Guitars aren't waterproof. Amps aren't waterproof. Power would have to be supplied. A generator would interfere with the sound. The area would have to be fenced off to avoid vandalism (not to mention possible electrocution). It would have to be curated, and finally birds in a natural environment would probably spend more time in trees.
Second there is purity of concept. How would you integrate this piece into the natural evironment? How would it change?

The use of a domesticated bird species cannot be accidental. This is a installation, designed to be experienced in a space, in a gallery. That creates a certain fabric of expectations and so forth. Using domestic birds in a caged environment evokes the concept of imprisonment, of music as spectacle, romantic ideas of the singing bird in the cage, rockstars as painted sogbirds, etc. Al so the gallery space provides the artist with total aesthetic control. In many ways designing conceptual art can be like scientific experiments. You've got to control the variables. If you're already incorporating one aleatoric element you don't want to incorporate too many more, or the work becomes muddled. You have to remember that the audiences subjective experience is also largely out of your control, though clever use of context can help here. When you place works, especially kinetic works, outside, unless they are engineered on a monumental scale, or with monumetal materials, the work almost inevitably picks up a suggestion of dealing with entropy and decay that you may not want to tackle.

The video is only a brochure or advert remember, not the work itself. Installations rarely translate well into other media.

I think another problem with introducing it into a field is that it could seem like the artist was attempting to disguise their control of the situation. Since that wouldn't be effective the aspect of playing with the rhythms of everyday life would probably come out more forcefully by introducing a comparatively uncontrolled element, living birds, to the gallery space than by putting the piece out in a field. Since it's a space where you expect the artist/curator to have control an aspect that will be inevitably somewhat chaotic makes more impact.

Bitchin'.

Live show aside though, I think Monoliths and Dimensions is a great album.  Black One's quite less so, more interesting than anything else.

Yeah, I downloaded that ///Maytag album on the recommendation of that blog post back in August.  It stayed interesting for about ten minutes before I deleted and forgot about it.

Now I'm picturing a terrible lounge singer singing "Sunn O-wowowow" over and over again into a microphone. His hair is slicked back so you can see his dazzling smile, and his Adam's apple bobs with the effort of the vibrato he is putting into that one name. I just woke up, and my day is starting badly.

edit: and after all kieffer's talk about "i got banned like 10 times and i'm still here!" this seems extra retarded.  and also there are already pictures of me on here, just look in my post history.

Even though this is the internet, could people maybe accept that she is who she says she is?  I know Jackie rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but seriously, would he harbor that much of a grudge to wait an entire year before making an alt?  Kieffer only took a break for a few months at most.  Even if she is a bit condescending sometimes, she deserves a chance at actually pissing people off before we make a pariah out of her for having the same blood or whatever.

To stay on topic, though...I think they should've added a bass somewhere in the aviary and turned up the gain.

Even if she is a bit condescending sometimes, she deserves a chance at actually pissing people off before we make a pariah out of her for having the same blood or whatever.

For the record she was pissing me off before I even knew who she was related to

No offence but it's patently obvious when Jackie is posting from this account.

Sign your name to your posts and I don't think anybody would care. Thus we can tell when we are talking to "Tricia" and when we're talking to "Jackie". Just do it as a favour to the rest of us. It's weird enough as it is.

i am the only one posting from this account!  can't we just drop this?  srsly?

i mean feel free to PM me with evidence about how it's patently obvious when i'm not being me but otherwise, who cares?  i'm just here talking about music... and dovey, if i offended you i'm sorry, i will be more nice?  i'm really trying here.

and also ptommy even if i "signed my name" every time i posted i'm still allegedly getting banned tomorrow night unless i provide a picture (which i am going to do, but still, i shouldn't have to).

I saw SUNN0))) tripping on acid.  I sat in the back of the room and the acid was pretty weak and it was still totally nuts and I had to leave near the end of the set.

I know it was near the end of the set because 2 blocks away, frantically looking for an alley to piss in (because I was not about to go back into the building where the concert was just because I desperately needed to void myself), I could still feel the vibrations in the small of my back, and as I finally relieved myself, I felt the vibrations stop and realized that the set was over.  I went back to the building and people were filing out.  I had deliberately evacuated my body of every ounce of waste I could 5 minutes before the set started, and yet 40 minutes later I excreted more water than I'd probably drank at all over the course of the entire day.

Those guys are serious.  The live show is probably the most purely intense sonic experience I've ever had, including Bassnectar, which is saying a LOT.  It's not just that they're loud (the wall of bass amps they play through has a facade that's easily 90-100 square feet).  It's that so much of their loudness is subsonic and slams you in the intestines that the cells in your abdomen basically experience the visceral equivalent of an 8.0 on the Richter scale.  It's actually probably really healthy and cleansing for your body (minus your ears of course).
