HAI blog thread! Check out my blog! (This week there is even mention of Infinite Pony Debates topics)

It is slightly pretentious and a little bit obtuse but I would like to flatter myself and say it is an entertaining read.

Thanks!

Tomorrow I have the day off work so I'm going to hang out with Rizzo and Liz and we're going to go junk fooding which will basically consist of Liz and I going to various fast food places and eating stuff. Shit yeah.

Also as a present for letting them crash at my place, Riz and Liz bought me Wolverine: Origins, Uncaged Edition which is easily one of the most blood thirsty games I've played and, for a movie-tie-in, is actually a lot of fun. Awesome.

Oh oh oh! For Valentine's Day we woke up at 1pm, played video games, ate bacon sandwiches, did some grocery shopping and then all went out for Indian food for dinner. Good day.

So I am taking this class right now, called ecological design, as a final class in my major of the same name. It's a really new/developing field, and the first few weeks of class have been spent discussing how to define the field and what it encompasses.

And it is completely infuriating. Half of the group are engineering types who are all butthurt that the college of engineering doesn't want to let it be called "ecological engineering" because there are ecology classes replacing some of the less useful engineering classes, and as the sole person interested in sustainable residential design, I spend EVERY discussion trying to defend the right of my concentration to belong under the "ecological design" title.

It's kind of hard to explain, but basically this group of people who are supposed to be interested in holistic incorporation of ecology and natural patterns into the human-designed world have become OBSESSED with limiting and excluding and generally being as much of assholes as the rest of engineers just so they can join the exclusive little titled club with all the blockheaded anti-innovation civil and environmental engineering douchesacks.

Your argument is invalid.

I am an engineer.  I am neither an asshole nor a douchesack.

Q.E.D.

Wait...  That was a little douchesacky, wasn't it?

Humor aside:  Sorry 'bout your class.  One of the unfortunate side effects of being inclined to engineering disciplines is the propensity to believe that you are almost always right.  Nothing says 'argument' like a meeting with 8 or 10 engineers all of whom have different opinions.  Looking back on it now, I suppose I could see some of that behavior manifesting itself at school too.

They want to limit it to only things with a biotic/self-designing component. I mean, I understand that things like living machines and anaerobic digestors need a title outside of environmental engineering, but where does that leave everything else?

As an engineer who works in the energy field (nuclear), I'm going to have to say that your representation of engineers is pretty spot on.

While Mr. Helmet claims:

I am an engineer.  I am neither an asshole nor a douchesack.

I happen to be both, so I cancel out his wrong opinion.

I have huge calf muscles and it's a combination of genetics and generally doing exercises/sports that are focused on legs, like skating, biking, soccer, etc. Actually I'm pretty sure soccer is what gave me my calf muscles. I am not happy about this because finding boots is a pain in the ass. :c

Blog, I am sick of snow. It snowed a lot last week, it snowed a LOT yesterday, and it's kind of still snowing. And we're getting more snow this weekend. I am sick of bad roads and sick of shoveling my beast of a driveway and tired of people using my driveway as a turn around and getting stuck. (A taxi had to be towed out of it because it missed the driveway and ran into the big ass pile of snow that runs alongside it. People GTFO of MY driveway!) It's getting to the point where the snow along the drive is in 3ft piles and unshoveled sidewalks are about a foot and a half deep. donotwantanymoresnowohgodddddd

Look what I got working this morning:
http://vimeo.com/9494080

The tracking still isn't perfect, but that's a trivial problem compared to getting the camera view and 3D graphics rendering properly. I've been working on this AR technology for months and I've almost got everything working!

Not just a goblin, whatever 3D model I decide to use, but yeah that's what it does. The main limitation is that AR Toolkit only recognizes pre-prepared shapes like that black and white marker on the table, but my collaborator Mark Skwarek is talking to an art festival in Indianapolis that's considering letting him paste big ol' markers all over downtown.

I'm curious as to why you went with 2D codes instead of geolocation?

An AR company we do stuff with has a geolocation based ad service where you make your own floating billboard appear over your street address (god knows why you'd opt in for more street advertising though).

Tracking precision. I mean, I already said that I need to adjust the sloppy tracking in this video, but more generally tracking markers is precise enough to tell you down to the pixel where the object should be, versus vague GPS tracking which is pretty much only accurate enough to tell you which house you're standing in front of. That level of accuracy is fine for floating a sign up in the air, but you're never gonna make something standing on the ground that way.

Right, so I met with a good friend of mine last week and she told me that she was seeing this guy who I really don't like. I told her so, I told her the reasons why I didn't like him (he came to me while she was away and more or less bragged about having fucked her, plus the guy just skeevs me out in general, plus Other Reasons) and today I saw her again and she told me that she had gotten into a fight with him over this and she was angry at him and at me. She's tired of having to be self-conscious in our quote unquote "friend group" and she reads my dislike of him to be coming from the fact that she essentially dated him right after she had broken up with my best friend. Honestly she's one of my best friends and it's not my place to make any sort of judgment on who she sees, and I told her that. Now, I don't claim to be knowledgeable about how human interaction really works (really this is all learned for me) but this felt like a sort of shot across the bow - I don't know what she wants me to stop doing, but she wants something and it's stressing me out trying to pinpoint what will make her happy, because it sure feels like she's lost a lot of confidence in me.

I know I'm the resident law student but is it illegal to smash a printer into tiny, tiny pieces if it's being really, really annoying? I've had to print almost everything about three times before it's finally actually printed - considering each sheet costs 4p and I must have printed about 100 sheets, that's a bit annoying (I do not like paying for things that do not exist).

Ah well. In about half an hour I'm going to the cinema; sod the two essays I still haven't written.

Sorry meeblyites but i have to get my life sorted or i will probably kill myself - or worse, flunk in a course again). My problem with working out has always been sheer laziness and detesting shortness of breath, both of which are pretty terrible reasons for not being in a reasonably okay shape. I don't know why i am telling you this but  fuck you, you are Blog Thread, this is why you exist in the first place.

Do this, it helps you gradually build up your stamina.  I lost about 40 pounds over a period of 6 months by doing this and cutting back on food (my weight has stayed pretty much the same since I've stopped, but I'm gonna start back up again in a month or so).  You don't have to follow it to the letter, it's just a good guide for doing cardio at a pace that won't kill you.

I am so doing that. Just printed off the page. I'll start Monday. I have just been going to the gym and doing the treadmill and stationary bike until I can't anymore. It makes me feel like balls afterward. Need structure!

Just keep in mind that new runners often encounter knee, ankle and joint problems so stretching effectively is vital, as is building up slowly.  Some fun facts about stretching:

-- A number of recent studies have shown that stretching cold, that is to say prior to any exercise is useless.  Warm up with at least 5 minutes of light cardio, stretch, do your work out, then stretch again after your work out is done.

-- When stretching avoid jerky or "ballistic" movements.  A lot of the stretches you may have done in high school gym class may have been ineffective or even dangerous.  The coolrunnings stretches (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/126.shtml) are OK but absurdly overambitious, if you did 12 stretches for 30 seconds 3 times each, you'd spend 30 minutes of your workout stretching which is about 3 times more than anyone I know, including marathon runners.  I recommend finding a calf, hams, quad, and lower back stretch that you like and doing each at least twice cumulatively for 30 seconds.

-- There's a bit of debate on how long to hold stretches for, but most of the physiotherapists and trainers I've read who know their stuff say the ideal time is 30 seconds.  Above 30 seconds and muscle fatigue sets in, and you stop benefiting from the stretch.  Below 30 seconds can work, but you'll just end up doing the same stretch more times.

Also, drink chocolate milk after working out to increase muscle repair and reduce soarness.

bunch of scientists said it would work and they seemed pretty on the ball so I believed them.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I really, really hate running. The only thing that keeps me going twice a week is the fact that I run with people I love, who I want to impress and who I don't want to let down. Some people don't like running with other people but they tend to be serious runners who are really fit and like to keep their own pace. If at all possible, run with someone else. Join a running club, find a friend who wants to get fit, buy a dog who likes long walks if you really have to.

Avatar was great! It was a bit hackneyed in places and I kept laughing at really inappropriate moments, but the visuals are so amazing in 3D and I didn't find the plot detail too predictable. The problem is now that I have two essays to write by tomorrow. I've made a huge plate of toast and laid in a lot of water to make tea, coffee, hot chocolate and juice, and I'm looking at an all-nighter.

ETA: Chocolate milk is the best thing ever.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."
