You are going to die and that will be it. There won't be a heaven, hell, afterlife, reincarnation or becoming a friendly ghost. Don't waste time wondering what comes after because there isn't anything.

So it looks like I will be in Germany for a few weeks around early October this year! Not the greatest time of year weather-wise to be there I think, but Chris's family is footing the bill to send us both there to visit his grandmother and aunts and everyone there after the wedding junk is over:)

Do we have any forumites near Wiesbaden/Mainz?

Isn't early October when Oktoberfest is?

It makes sense in the same way that May Week is in June.

I like to think that it was a tradition established in my honour long before I was thought of, in order to celebrate my eventual arrival.

Jens, I am English Lit major, and I had the same crisis last year.  I am really good at analyzing texts and writing academic essays about them, but I began to get this creeping feeling that the whole discipline was bullshit.  It became overwhelming and I actually had days when I cried.  I had been so aimless in my life for so long and when I started taking Lit classes it just clicked for me and I felt "this is it!" and then when I realized it was a giant circle jerk I was shattered because I didn't want to spend my time doing analysis that is worthless.  I actually got the the point that I went to some trusted professors on the verge of tears and asked them what the point was.  Why do we bother studying Literature?  It dosen't make the general population read/understand/care about these works any more.  The profession is filled with pretentious self-important twats who just argue with each other about points which make no difference to the world in the end.  It's not like we are going to cure cancer by debating the meaning of Belinda's relationship with Mr. Vincent in Maria Edgeworth's novel Belinda from 1801.  I've sort of reached a solution for myself though.

I genuinely enjoy this sort of analysis, and I am good at it, but to feel good about it I have focused myself, and decided not to make the thesis which is easy, but ones which can fit within my larger understanding of the purpose of literary analysis.  Which, I think, is something you have to discover for yourself.  I don't know what mode of analysis is emphasized in your University, but I personally find some of the forms that professors push pointless, and so I avoid them. I don't believe in authorial authority, and so I refuse to write a paper which has a thesis like "Defoe wants us to see that the emerging marketplace is dangerous for young women."  I don't know what your focus is within Lit, but it may be good for you to look into other critical theories to see if one of them fits better for you and doesn't feel like it makes texts lifeless and dry.  Reading scholarly analysis is what got me into the crisis, but it is also what got me out of it.

As far as where to go in life as sappy as it sounds I am a firm believer in doing what makes you happy.  If for you that is writing, then you should go for it.  That being said it is important to have realistic expectations, you will have a hard time becoming a published writer who writes books which come from your heart.  But there are other careers which rely on writing and if you enjoy writing and are good at it a job writing ad copy, or even something ridiculous like translating catalogs (if that job even exists) uses skills you have, involves daily work you don't hate doing, and which will only strengthen your mastery of language increasing the chances that the writing you do for yourself will find success.

See, I felt that way about lit. studies and just decided to stop going to uni instead. Two sides to every coin! Jens, what I am saying is to drop out of uni and get a menial job. You know you want to! (Personally, I think doing creative writing courses and lit. studies were some of the reasons I have stopped writing, which is kinda sad)

Actually, in terms of the writing deal, if you want to become a novelist or something, maybe look at it as a lot of people do with music; just do it on the side until it is financially viable to support yourself. When I was learning about creative writing as a profession and how hard it is to get any money out of it and anything published and how much hard work it is, it really was very discouraging and depressing. But if you keep that in mind and don't think it's going to be all flowers and sunshine then you never know what might happen if you don't try? Maybe just try submitting stuff to magazines or competitions or something, and see how it goes?

Blog thread, I spent the weekend with the internet. I saw Frank Turner and Flogging Molly. I have a bruise on my nose from getting elbowed and headbutted. My nose did not bleed though. I drank more this weekend than I think I have ever before, though that doesn't say much. Final Summary: hanging out with the internet is super fun!

Because of a conversation with another forumite, I've been introduced to the interesting sport of parkour. It can be described as "the art of saying 'fuck you' to gravity." I found a forum for Bay Area traceurs and I've actually gotten in contact with one here in Live-no-more. He and I are gonna start training together fairly soon, so I am pretty excited about that.

Also I have been running a lot and biking a lot and doing hella pushups and situps and pullups and basically I am refusing to be a skinny little shit anymore. I ain't paying for my food anymore, so I'm gonna eat and bulk up and get in shape while I've still got this setup going. Might as well do something to improve my health since I obviously don't have the capacity to improve myself on a personal level.

I was trying to figure out what season it was that red land crabs do their thing on Christmas Island and it took a surprisingly large amount of effort. Most pages on the internet about them all have identical text and whoever they all started copying from doesn't seem to have included it.

Turns out it's novemberish.

Dovey, it depends quite a lot on your personal tolerance for nicotine. I'll have to look it up again, but there was a whole discussion about the process of addition in various people in The Tipping Point

Not a whole lot honestly.   If you smoke four cigarettes a day every day, and all of a sudden you have none, your body is going to tell you about it.

At the risk of sounding like a preachy git (and nobody likes one, I know) I smoked between one and three packs a day for twenty years.  Quitting was probably the single hardest thing I've done in my entire life.   Now that it has been a few years since I had a cigarette, I can't understand why I started in the first place.   My advice to everyone is put that shit down while you can.

Yeah I was just wondering cos I smoked a bunch of "humourous" cigarettes yesterday and now today I have a pretty big headache and also I feel like I kind of want a cigarette and I thought maybe one had to do with the other but it's probably more that the headache is because of sunburn+lack of sleep

So, uh, about two weeks ago my father moved his girlfriend in with us at which point some seriously fucked up shit happened surrounding her. Like cheesy B-movie horror flick stuff, but it's all good now! Now we just have to deal with a 3-year-old child who is too adorable. Take this for example:

She came up to her mother wanting to eat dinner. The mother (Missy) looked down at her (Nikki) and asked her, "You just ate, how can you be hungry? All you do is eat!" to which Nikki gleefully responded, "Eat and poop!"

word up it is! it doesn't harm you at all and shark week fuckin' sucks. the only thing is a lot of people have this gut level fear of anything that isn't "natural", whatever that actually is, but yeah. you really could just skip shark week i guess forever if you really wanted to.

I think the only negative side effects of skipping periods are psychological.

Wait. I was wrong.

I did not read through this because the blurb on Google said enough.

Edit: wrong link.

My mom skips her placebo week all the time and goes straight to her next pack. I don't see what the problem is, but it still freaks me out.

So, I just got done at my job interview, and well, I hope I got the job. Overall, I think they like me! So hopefully they'll hire me. I'm supposed to get a second interview, do I call them for that, or should I wait it out?

Where was the interview? how long did it take? Did they mention that there were other people pending for interview or possibly when interviewing ends?

i roll my spliffs usually 85+ percent not tobacco to tobacco. But that is for indoor spliffs. honestly you can roll them that weedy and just use an incredibly dark, fragrant tobacco and yr good for smoking them in public cos the tobacco smoke is so strong.

Huh. I'll have to try that. Got any suggestions for brands of tobacco for this? See, I'm planning on going to a show in June, and I'd like to not smell like weed while I'm all smoking it in public.

Yeah May I used to do that all the time, it is why I was prescribed them in the first place because Shark Week was pretty painful, but now I am actually using the tablets for their intended use I have to have my placebo every month just to MAKE SURE because I have read too many 'I didn't know I was pregnant' horror stories. Shark Week eases my mind.
