in other news i spent the better part of last night trying to download and install a pirated version of windows xp in order to reformat this old laptop of mine because for reasons i don't understand it would not accept my actual installation cd and product key. the one i paid for. you are so stupid, microsoft.

My mom updated her copy of Office, and then it forgot it was registered and she no longer has the product key. To e-mail Microsoft support costs, like, $20 or something. I don't know if keygens have caused deactivation of large swaths of old product keys, or if Microsoft really is maliciously deactivating products so that people have to pay money to receive support over e-mail. Sure, I accept that you get a lot of "Where's the any key?" type e-mails, and a lot of questions about things that are in FAQs, but maybe if you stopped making such a shitty product you'd stop needing to offer so much support.

I went to the gym for the first time in 6 weeks today.  I assumed that the change in fitness wouldn't have been so great - boy was I wrong. I could barely lift half of my old maxes, and only made it half way through the routine before I had to go throw up. I still feel all shaky.

I suppose I thought that because my change in appearance was particularly minor, that I would be fine - maybe drop the intensity back by 10% for the first week. But the mirror lied.

microsoft doesn't really lose that much money over pirated software and keygens, do they? think about the amount of computers a large business or university uses and the cost of loading legit copies of windows (and office!) onto every single one of them. i'm imagining there must be enough universities and businesses out there that use hundreds of computers every day that microsoft would make an absolutely ridiculous fortune off that already and they can maybe stop freaking out so much about the few home users who decide to steal someone else's key so they can have it for free.

also i paid for this so it's supposed to be mine, damnit. you stink microsoft.

i can't wait until I go back to the gym. It has been..........3 and a half years since I stopped going (I put on 30kg since then, then lost 10kg - I'm still 20kg heavier than I'd like to be and super unfit. Fuck.

Also I just opted to go to full-time at my horrible call centre job instead of casual. This means significantly less pay an hour but I get sick leave and paid holidays and a guaranteed $550 pay cheque every week as opposed to anywhere between $0 and $700 a week depending on whether it is busy or not. I guess this is a good thing, at least until I can get a new, better job. Or something.

Oh hey blog thread. I may as well post in you properly since I'm here.

My brother graduated from university today! This may not seem like a big deal but he's been doing his undergraduate degree for seven years because he had to transfer around a few times and then he failed some classes because it turns out he has terrible exam anxiety so despite the fact that he turns every paper in and does really well throughout the semesters he would always bomb out in the final exams that are worth like, 50%. But it's ok now because now he has a shiny double degree in Music and Education. So yay for him.

That said, I really wish I hadn't had to go to the graduation ceremony today. Don't get me wrong, I am happy for him but both my parents (dad and stepmum are the ones I consider my parents) and my mum were there (my mum and dad haven't spoken for years and years and I think it's been at least a decade since my mum last spoke to my stepmum, longer since she spoke to my grandma). Also given that my mum then invited herself to dinner with my parents and Alex and I, it just made the whole evening incredibly stressful and awful and honestly I wish this day had just not happened.

I tried to teach the puppy to play fetch.

I threw a ball out into the yard. He ran out, pissed on it, then ran back looking as proud as ever.

Good boy, close enough...

Hey blog thread, how's it hanging?

In order to try and get myself out of my current slump of boredom, unemployment and videogames I have decided to get up early today and try and learn to use the terminal on my mac (again). (Not that there's anything wrong with being unemployed and playing videogames, I was just getting a bit depressed about the repetition).

Surprisingly enough I've actually succeeded in getting up, it's 8am and while I am still in bed I'm awake and on the computer. I've also downloaded all the course materials from one of the compsci papers I did years ago on Unix. Hopefully this will get me up to speed.

Then once it hits about 10am I'm gonna head to the shops and get some food for my girlfriend's chinchilla and hopefully find a Darth Vader costume for a reasonable price. My girlfriend's 21st is this Friday and the theme is Starwars. I can't afford a proper costume but I plan on getting some facepaint and doing myself up to look like Vader. Should be awesome!

Finally I will apply for some jobs. You know, to get money. To move to Australia. Cause New Zealand is getting old. And I can hang out with Jimmy more. HAI JIMMY.

Blog thread, I'm freaking out a little right now. Tomorrow I have an interview with the Glasgow School of Art, which is pretty much my dream school. I'm worried because at the age of 21, I've never actually been to any sort of interview before. Schools don't really do interviews in Norway, and I basically got my job thrown at me when my friend who was quitting recommended me to her boss. I'm also freaking out because when I called to actually schedule my interview the woman who answered was from rural Scotland. I could not for the life of me understand a word she said. I'm just praying for the interviewer to be BBC English or something, because I already have trouble hearing what people are saying when talking on the phone, and it's a phone interview! Also, how will I be able to talk about my portfolio for 20 minutes? Oh god, I've never done this before, and all I keep thinking about is how this 20 minute phone call will decide where I end up this fall.

I feel like I need my asthma medicine now, and I don't even have asthma.

There is absolutely no reason for you to worry about this. I had feedback on several of my interviews, because my tutors were friends with...just about everybody, apparently.
There's just ONE thing. ONE thing, that you need to put forward in your interview.
You need them to know you're focused. Don't come across as a chaotic or scatterbrained person. Once you convince them that you're capable of getting work done, you just rely on your talent to get you in, which is the easiest thing in the world.

Awesome, Jens! I'm sure you'll be fine, but good luck anyway.

And thanks guys! I'm writing down some notes about what I want to talk about, questions I want to ask them and answers to questions they'll probably ask me, and I'm feeling a lot calmer now. I'm pretty sure I can try to convince them I'm focused, which I guess I am after all, at least somewhat. It'll be fine! And if I don't get in it's not the end of the world, I already got into my second choice which is a pretty damn good school as well.

Definitely doing my hair in the style, James.

Blog thread, today I talked for an hour and twenty two minutes with (or rather listened to) a lady who has had the most depressing, unfortunate life it's possible to have in a first world country. I won't go into details but her career was a flop, her marriages failed, she lost her first baby and one of the four other children developed mental health problems resulting in a long-winded epic leading to her, well over retirement age, being sole carer for twins with behavioural problems.

I was torn - we're only meant to chat for about ten minutes before we mention the annual fund and then wind up the conversation, but I literally could not get a word in edgeways. I felt sorry for her, but at the same time her attitude is so defeated and also places blame on everyone else and I couldn't help thinking that her negativity can't have helped matters. Plus my supervisor was tearing her hair out about me still being on the phone to someone who was clearly not going to make a donation. In the end she did actually notice that all the background noise had disappeared because everyone else had gone home, so I managed to finish the conversation without actually just hanging up on her, but it was well after we were meant to finish and I'd arranged to ring three other people back tonight who I never got to.

Hm. I guess it was just weird talking to someone whose attitude is so alien to mine as I am now. Perhaps in fifty years, if my life spans out as hers did, I would be equally defeatist and cynical but at the moment I try not to let things get me down.

And on that note I am going to make some hot chocolate and go to bed.

By the way, Kris do not worry! Try and sit somewhere formal, rather than in your bedroom, like maybe at a desk where you work, to keep you focused, but don't panic because you are articulate and interesting and you clearly care about your subject so go for it!

1 of 3 for UCs so far.
Definitely 1 of 4, most likely 1 of 5 considering the two I am waiting on are Cal (fuck) and Davis (probably fuck).
I'm so awesome!

But I'm not that sad, since I kind of deserved these rejections :P

I've been playing music with greatly talented people though and I'm about to do that in twenty-five minutes so, whatever.

Santa Cruz... i'm totally fine going to Santa Cruz. it is in the FOREST! and on the beach! and my buddy is most likely going to be living in the beach trailer park housing option after our first year. So that will be hella fun. I'm most interested in bioengineering but I probably shouldn't have applied under that seeing how it's kind of the most competitive engineering major, especially among the nerdiest of nerds.

Anyway, I have realized that my life has been consumed by music for the past four weeks and that probably explains why I'm not so depressed anymore. I was in the pit band for the school musical (which was actually really fucking good) for three weeks and now I'm just rehearsing shit every other day with some really good kids. I like this. I can live like this. I am seeing Metric on Friday too!! Fuck! I never get to brag about my life...

Also congrats on getting into UCSC. I'm a tad bitter that it was my first choice when I was applying to colleges and I got rejected from it (from all four UC campuses I applied to in fact, I didn't even apply to Merced and they took me in.) but seriously though good job dogg!

Exciting school things! I was nominated for, then awarded the Alumni Award for Outstanding Graduating Student for my college, despite the little fact that I will not actually be quite graduating this May (one more calculus class to do over summer). I have also been asked to speak at graduation! Super flattering and nice to know that my professors think I'm good shit, but I would pretty much fall over and die if I tried to actually do that.

Le sujet du blogue,

We performed a Shakespeare play (my team did A Midsummer Night's Dream) at school for my English class. It was alright. We actually forgot our lines in a whole scene, but our teacher said it was alright since we actually had more material than the other groups.

And I applied to college a month ago and I still didn't get an answer. I am starting to seriously stress out and I am starting to wonder if I should've applied in a French College instead of an English one. I am stressing the fuck out. =/

Dear Dovey

I hope the giant Perth storms have not drowned you

<3 much love
Jodie

They have not!

Hello blog thread, As Jodie implied my home town of Perth, Western Australia was hit by some pretty crazy storms on Monday. After what was officially the driest summer Perth has had since the beginning of weather records, in the course of a few hours something like 55mm of rain was dumped on the metropolitan area. As well as this there were hailstones not just like golf balls but like fucking tennis balls, and wind gusts up to 120km/h.

Luckily for myself I guess there was no hail falling in the city CBD which is where I was at work on Monday, and unlike most days when I need to be at work in the city I had driven my car in instead of taking public transport and walking. I had no idea that there was any hail or the extent of the storm at all until I went to my parent's house after work and my dad showed me his car which had been dimpled with dents from falling hailstones and declared that he got lucky, and some cars were so badly damaged as to be written off.

Similarly my house managed to survive unscathed which is a genuine surprise considering the amount of water damage it already has, that there is no apparent water damage from this most recent storm which I would say is the worst Perth has seen in 15 years.

More deets on the overall storm story here

The differences between grading systems in UK and US universities are weird.
(first grade is the one I got at Glasgow, second grade is what it converted to at the UC)

Amanda, that is totally awesome and great! Man, I've heard a lot of good news lately, but I think that might be the best news I've heard for anyone in awhile. Thats totally cool.

So Blog Thread, last night my boyfriend and I decided to go out with a friend to goth night. He brought along his new girlfriend, who complained and made fun of this one girl who is somewhat of a icon in the area, and possibly further, which whatevs. Then she got super drunk, wandered into the kitchen of the bar as we were leaving, and attempted to steal a bottle of Grand Mariner, which she dropped in front of the bouncer as we were walking out. Then he threatened to call the cops on all of us. Keep in mind that this was my boyfriend and my first time meeting her, and we obviously wouldn't encourage stealing from the main goth club in our city. It would suck getting kicked out. The friend apologized to the bouncer, who found the girl drunk laying in the gravel outside the club, crying. And he let us leave. Well, he let them leave, I'm fairly certain that he didn't think my boyfriend and I were involved.

Then tonight we went out to celebrate my new job. We went to a fancy Italian place located in St. Louis's "little Italy". We spent $114. But it was totally worth it! I've never had food so amazing. And then wine was superb. And they played Frank Sinatra for most of the night! It was a fantastic evening.

Bwah, I'm organizing a charity party thing, and I am so excited about it. I got all my fancy forms and everything. I just need to print out a number of tax exempt forms, and write some letters to various venues, and some to people begging for donations. And then I have to go to all these places and super repeat myself explaining who I am with, and what we are doing and how they'd be super awesome if they donated something! I've got like five record stores to go to, a piercing place, and a few bars. Maybe somewhere that sells instruments. And the food bank. I'm excited!

Argh argh argh I cannot revise when I didn't do the work in the first place!

Also I checked the syllabus and there are at least four topics we haven't even covered this year, unless they were in the lectures I missed (eminently possible but why on earth weren't they covered in supervisions?) so I have to start them from scratch as well.

WHY OH WHY did I not take the advice of doing 20 hours work for each supervision? There are some that I did no more than twenty minutes towards.

You are the only person on this board I like

Dear Blog Thread,

Yesterday I worked out that my savings when I leave for travelling, after airfares/buying a bag/visas/ATP tickets/etc will be several grand short of what I planned to have. I also found out that my girlfriend has/will manage to save probably $10k more than me, meaning that there is a good chance that I will end up sponging off of her a fair bit once we have been away for a while. On the one hand, she made a good point in that I basically paid for everything when she was still studying and I was working full-time but on the other hand I still feel really guilty about the prospect of having to rely on her, even if it is just theoretical at this point.

It basically made me feel very depressed mostly because she has constantly been telling me that I need to cut back on buying clothes and other stuff I don't really need and save more and me possessing basically no foresight and being stubborn as all get-out completely ignored her and continued to squander, and she now potentially bears the ill effects of my poor impulse control. I feel even worse about this because, bless her, she is the least selfish person I have ever met and is perfectly happy to do so.

Also this week I got laid off from one of my jobs, and the only one which is really to do with my chosen field. I had been sound engineering at a bar on Sunday nights. The resident band was an acoustic trio who do covers of mostly-popular music without straying into playing the same 15 songs as every other cover band ever. Basically they were populist enough to get over with most people while still being able to engage a complete music snob like me. It also helped that all three guys were insanely talented at their instruments without being showy and the singer had some of the most excellent stage banter out of any band local or otherwise I had seen. They were consummate professionals with decades of experience which in turn made my job insanely easy and they also allowed me a fair bit of freedom in terms of what I did with front-of-house sound (I can be pretty heavy-handed with the delay unit).

Anyway I received an e-mail (fired by an email! dang!) on Tuesday night from the bar manager that their main sound guy had made himself available for Sunday nights and my services were no longer needed. I am really bummed out about this because even though I whined about having to work Sunday nights I genuinely enjoyed working with and watching the band play and hanging out with bar staff and the Sunday night regulars (mostly other bar staff from this establishment and others on their night off). Also: free beer/coffee/red bull!

I should feel better because I was not fired because of some incompetency of mine I guess, but to be completely honest I think that's making me feel worse. It was just really out of the blue.

(yes I know this is pretty retarded based on what I just said about my impulse spending on clothing but hey fuck you I wanted that jumper)

I got accepted for pastry arts at Holland College here in PEI, which I guess isn't too surprising. Supposedly they only take 25 people a year for the program, but I am an accomplished amateur baker and I don't know how many people actually apply to Pastry Arts.
As far as culinary institutes in Canada, Holland College is a thing.

I guess I have to think about where I want to be. I do not know if I want to spend another year in Charlottetown. I miss things and it is tiny and people are strange here.

There is the thought of going to such a school in Vancouver because I have friends there and it is a nice place, but fees are like $6000 more expensive in Vancouver, and lodging would be way more expensive.
I am going to have to dig to come up with $8000 in fees for this school, so I think Vancouver isn't really plausible right now.

Man, go to Holland college, I know that PEI sucks(but it's pretty!) but their program is really pretty well known and apparently amazing, it's entirely worth it to stay and do it so I say you should.

Well, since we are talking about Uni/College/CEGEP, I got my answer from Vanier College and I got accepted in Pure and Applied Science there. So, this is pretty cool.

love,
Anthony.

Got a reply from another school I applied for saying I'm in, which means I now have a 'yes' from three out of three schools, still waiting for replies from two. This one recommended me to skip the year I applied for and jump up a level. Ego boost!

None of those schools were Glasgow though, so I'm still going to have to wait patiently.
