Whedon's original script for Alien: Resurrection is masterful. Dollhouse was admittedly messy with moments of brilliance.

But ragging on Buffy? That's just cold.

The little voice in my head goes "Really? After his runs on Astonishing X-men and Runaways? At this point, they can clearly afford Russell Mallachy..."

Sorry, I just don't think that Whedon's style is suited to feature-length projects and his writing runs with Marvel were just "okay". Depending on the feel they want to go for, if they want action and to ham it up a bit, I'd say go with Mullachy. For a moodier tone but still lots of action, probably Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf was excellent, I've not seen Silent Hill) or Timur Bekmambetov.

Man I'm pretty ok with Joss Whedon directing this. I've loved almost everything that he's been involved with. Buffy was rad, Angel was rad, Toy Story was rad, Astonishing X-Men was rad, Firefly was rad. I can't comment on Dollhouse because I've never seen it but man, if the only thing that we can say about him was that he was involved in one shit film and one average series among many other successful and entertaining projects I'm willing to show a little faith here and wait 'til the movie is out to shit all over him.

It's just a personal preference. Joss Whedon's a bit like David S. Goyer in that he has much more success in writing than he does in directing. (He tends to throw an Anne Rice if people ask him about Alien Resurrection)

If he was just doing the writing, I'd be a bit more intrigued, but given that several of the prime characters for the Avengers have already had at least one stand-alone movie, I'm not sure that I have that much faith. They have Chris Evans in as Captain America. Favereau is producing, so it sounds like it may stick to the tone of the Iron Man films, if you like that kind of thing.

I don't know. I loved Iron Man, and I'm hoping Favereau(sp) can keep Avengers together.

Apparently I'm a plonker and stepping on toes for liking Pacte du Loup and Day Watch, but hey, ain't gonna cry myself to sleep over it.

Did you not watch Day Watch as well? It was pretty awesome, but a bit sillier in some aspects than Night Watch, which is why I recommended him.

First still from Kenneth Branagh's Thor.

God that looks terrible.

Oh and also both Thor and Captain America will be in 3D, natch, though neither will be shot in 3D. That will turn out well.

All joking aside, I'm not really that upset by my disappointment, if that makes any sense. I expected this. I mean, c'mon: Beta Ray Bill. To read a Thor comic is to drink deep of the balls out fantasy still present in silver age comics. I really don't know how you're supposed to take the character and not have it coming out looking like "Wait, what?" when translated to real actors.

Joss Whedon's strong point has always been dialog and character interaction.  I think that's lacking in a lot of Hollywood movies.  I am suspect to how well he can do superheroes.  Serenity, to me, proves he can do epic action.  Though, those are with his established characters.  I think it could go either way.  I'd rather see a Doctor Horrible feature, myself.

Since he's always been something of an awful director, in mine humble opinion. The man is a pretty solid Shakespeare actor, and that's the only good thing I can say about him.

Also he's an asshole.

The thing is, they're not just vanity projects but debasements of classic literature. Plus he manages to star in loads of just straight up bad films that he should know better about, and still can't impress when surrounded by a load of slack-jawed half wits who never made it passed the pouting classes at acting school. Hamlet paid off, sure but one good film in a career of absolutely offensive bullshit doesn't absolve him. In fact, Branagh gets the opposite of one of these.

I don't like this. I doubt Joss Whedon will be able to hold any sway with Marvel. I've got a feeling that he'll be forced to squeeze in so many cameos and backstories that he won't be able to make sense of this movie.
