I'm not big on labels and knowing specifically under which subgenres a band falls, but I'm pretty sure Torche would be sludge metal.  And I enjoy the album of theirs which I have listened to, Meanderthal.  If it's your thing, check it out

In all seriousness, Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa are pretty good places to start for sludge. I'm pretty sure that you can find the majority of their albums in the mf thread.

Apart from maybe Eye of the Storm, you can't really go wrong with Neurosis.

Made Out of Babies is great (I put one of their album on the mf thread a little while back).

Tombs is also good.  They're more like a black metal/sludge hybrid, I guess.

reed what boris albums are sludge?

you should probably start with Akuma no Uta. That's the one I started with and it cemented my love for Boris for the rest of eternity even if I only enjoy around...30% of their work.

the first track is a 9 minute sludgey epic with no percussion, followed suddenly and horrifyingly by some super-fast rocking the fuck out.

No! Don't muck about with bands who just have a little sludge influence (or in the case of Mastodon, very little). It's just not dirty enough, and far too wimpy if you're wanting the thick black hate that sludge delivers.

Iron Monkey do sludge with a bit of stoner riffing. Nasty as hell. Eyehategod are totally essential, smoked out destruction in that Southern way. Buzzov*en are pretty banging and one of the dead early bands. Corrupted mix it up with some horrible doom in order to crush more skulls. Noothgrush are Japanese too, and only a bit less brutalising than Corrupted.

And then, listen to some Overmars.

Sludge is a pretty broad genre. It ranges from bands like Kylesa, Torche, and the like, all the way to balls to the wall traditional sludge like you've posted above, and then to the very fringes of post-metal with bands like Minsk or Giant Squid. There's also a pretty blurred line between Stoner, Doom, and Sludge, with many bands being arguably a part of more than one of those genres.

Yeah, sludge has always mixed it up with stoner rock, doom and all that. Mostly I just think Mastodon are shite, but I still reckon those sorts of bands don't really represent sludge, more stuff that's sludge influenced. I mean, I love bands like Cursed and Knut have got some sludge in there but I wouldn't recommend them as a starting point for sludge bands, even something like Snowblood might be a bit too far from the template. It's never really been that much of a cohesive genre anyway though, so it probably doesn't matter much.

And yeah, motherfucking Melvins. Get on some shit like Bullhead. Also side two of My War by Black Flag, that's kinda proto-sludge I guess and totally excellent.

Crowbar, Down, Corrosion of Conformity, Weedeater.

Down and CoC mix in quite a bit of southern rock influence, which I don't think is too uncommon, considering how much sludge is made in the south. Crowbar might be a bit of an acquired taste because of the singer's limited vocal range, same with Weedeater.

Khar, I assume that isn't meant as an insult, is it? I know that in a huge list of metal bands you liked that you posted at one point, Crowbar was in there, and so was Alabama Thunderpussy, even though they are more southern metal than sludge metal.

Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine.

It's basically Anderson/O'Malley (the Sunn 0))) dudes), with Justin Greaves from Electric Wizard on drums and Lee Dorrian on vocals. Nice and sludgy.

Well, there's also Salome! They're cool. If anything they have the most vicious female vocalist in the known universe.
Also, there's good ol' Melvins.

I second whoever says Torche, even if it isn't a 110% sludge. "Meanderthal" is still a genius record, and their new stuff sounds very promising.
Other bands could be The Abominable Iron Sloth, Rwake and Kongh. I really like Kongh, but they're maybe more of a doom band.

Grief will see you right, and Dystopia are much faster and generally more hardcore but they were still pretty sludgy (plus, Dead Kennedys sample!). Rwake are pretty decent.

Also, not properly sludge but you really need to be listening to Harvey Milk, Floor and Snowblood.

You can appreciate sludge without being stoned. Or stoner music without being stoned.

Don't like sleep all that much, though. Small amounts, sure, but not a full album (which means Dopesmoker is right out). Kind of like AC/DC or Motorhead in that way.

Sorry dude but you're rapidly failing music. Actually come to think of it I have never listened to Sleep stoned. My go-to in that situation is Boris Heavy Rocks, which I hope to high fucking hell that you have listened to by now, sean.

Also in the "not sludge but close enough and awesome enough to bear mention" section are Doomriders and Disappearer, both out of the incestuous Massachusetts hardcore scene that gave us Converge and Cave-In. In fact, Doomriders has Nate from Converge and Jebb from Disappearer is in Doomriders and along with Thomas Disappearer used to be in There Were Wires, and they've been produced by both Kurt from Converge and Steve Brodsky from Cave-In. Phew!

Also they both kick ass, woo.

I like that this genre-label does everything it's supposed to do. It gives a good feeling of how the music sounds, especially if it's coupled with -metal, and sludge is totally dirty like the music.

Man, not thought about 5ive in years. Bit disappointing live but this song is pretty nifty. Although after listening to it I get a definite feeling of "that's enough 5ive for a bit", which might explain why it's been years since I last heard them.

I was having trouble finding a link for them before, but Hydra Head led me to Cavity's myspace. More of that thudding like a lead pipe to the skull.

No, I see where you're coming from. At least when you're listening to Noxious Coitus or something you can be sure nobody will get confused and think you're referring to a late-'90s boyband.

In an Iron Monkey/Noothgrush worship vein I would like to suggest:

http://www.myspace.com/molochscum Moloch.

&

http://www.myspace.com/thedeadinthewoods Dead in The Woods.

I'm not going to get into a sludge or not sludge,(Mainly because my ex, on another forum, in a thread about sludge offended my very soul by saying that Iron Monkey weren't very good & Back Flag were overrated & the 2nd side of My War had nothing to do with sludge, I'm glad we broke up now. He also didn't like Star Wars. Bah!)  but these bands kick ass. (& share members & make good cake & are mostly super nice guys.)

Acid Bath are kinda fun, but they've got too much of the southern rock in there for me to ever think of them as a top sludge pick. They'd be a great starting point for anyone massively into stoner rock and wanting something harsher though.

http://www.myspace.com/molochscum Moloch.

Fully backed. They were great with Closure.

Re: tell me about bands that could be labeled as sludge bands

I believe that Acid Bath are a perfect example of sludge metal with a bit of nice flavours and I obviously see them as a top pick. The southern rock influences just make the music richer. On the other hand I fail to see any Monster Magnet in their music except in the second album but the debut it's more in the sludge side, God... Just listen to Dr. Seuss is Dead. Unless people like the sludge vocals to be just completely lame with a guy with a throat problem a la Eyehategod. Don't take it wrong, I love Eyehategod but it feels like everyone is doing the same thing after them.

That's not at all true. Now people are just copying... whatever band started the prog-sludge trend that Baroness, Mastodon, and a bunch of other bands I can't remember off the top of my head are doing. Was it Neurosis?

Acid bath isn't really a straightforward sludge band, I like them, but they aren't wholly sludge. Then again, neither are a lot of the ones I'm seeing recommended. I could be biased, though, I tend to think of sludge as what happens when black flag meet black sabbath in Louisiana, so it would take a whole lot more southern rock influence to make me think of something as not sludge than it appears to for wolves.

Well, by the way you put it, I do take back what I said about Acid Bath being a "perfect" example of sludge, but I would still highly recommend it if someone wants to get into sludge and after a whole page I was surprised that they weren't mentioned since it's not like they are so not-sludge or underground.

I also agree with Nodaisho that it takes a huge load of southern rock influence to make a sludge band less sludge because almost every sludge band has southern rock in their music to some degree imo

But Yeah, we shouldn't discuss to much about the subject. Neurosis is amazing, one of my favorite bands ever mkay... Through Silver In Blood is... brilliant.
