I think I might be more upset if a Pitchfork writer didn't make some sort of specious claim in a review. I wouldn't trust it.

Fucked Up is a pretty good band, though.

I'm more puzzled by what an 'album band' is.  Is it a band that releases albums?  Isn't that all bands? 

Maybe it's not that they're the best hardcore band.  Maybe they're the best album band that are so album that they're hardcore album.

Really? I thought it was obvious. Think of those bands that put out so-so records but if you took one or two songs from each one of their albums, you'd have one killer album (say, I don't know, Prince post-comeback). That's not an album band. An album band makes whole albums of good songs.

They only really got good around the release of their first album, Hidden World. Which, imo is a fantastic record.

Man I don't remember writing that so I'm going to go ahead and blame it on whiskey gremlins.  

Also... Fugazi isn't so much old dudes who are really into hardcore playing songs as they are old dudes who kind of invented hardcore playing songs.  Surely that gives them a little leeway with the definition of the term

Break-In, Great Cop, Public Witness Program, Back To Base, Five Corporations... yep, sounds like hardcore to me.

I like Fucked Up, but they're not even the best Canadian hardcore band of the last 20 years.

The Swarm. Parasitic Skies is just fucking ridiculous, an absolutely savage record. When some of those guys went on to do Cursed that was them toning things down and getting a bit soft.

Propagandhi are easily better than Fucked Up as well, and possibly better than The Swarm. That's a tough call though. And Chokehold, Content With Dying is a beast of an album. And Left For Dead are better too, obviously. Can't count out Shotmaker either, they were fantastic. And hell, I still really like Submission Hold even if they are a bit cheesy and I'd probably take Progress (As If Survival Mattered) over any of Fucked Up's records.

Sometimes I get worried by the vast extent to which I realise what I'm saying is just a clumsy, overwrought version of Propagandhi lyrics (except for the odd exception like Ladies' Night In Loserville). Now I think hard about it they probably are the best hardcore band of the last twenty years, bar none.

Propagandhi were tolerable for the time John K Samson was there but by and large they were embarassingly clumsy and overwrought and fairly lame.

I honestly don't understand your outrage, dovey. The only decent hardcore bands were the ones that moved away from the hardcore sound like Fugazi,Rites of Spring, Slint, Husker Du, The Minutemen (it must be noted that although Black Flag moved away from the archetypical hardcore sound, they were never a good band).

There was also an european, parallel but separate, hardcore scene.
