(I don't know if it's in the wrong section of the forum. If it's supposed to be in the Computer section, pardon me)

Okay, here's the thing. I have been interested in 8-bit music for a while now, and I was wondering if there were any good (read: free) softwares that would let me do some. I have been searching for some softwares, but I am not sure what are trackers, sound chips and all the "technical terms".

Free? Dunno. I use Reason (which you can get for free, illegitimately, though mine is legit) and the Subtractor synth with a simple saw wave. You can also load up the drum sequencer with Commodore patches and the like.

I'm with KvP on this one, Reason is the easiest/preferred way to go. If you want to invest in being "totally 8bitxcore" you can whip out your old Gameboy Color and buy LittleSoundDJ or Nanoloop. Trying to run rom emulator software with those is a terrible idea, though.

But does Reason requires a MIDI keyboard?

Right now though, I've been using Reaper with some VSPs and the digital MIDI keyboard. I am fiddling with it, and it sounds pretty alright.

Reason doesn't require a MIDI keyboard but it sure helps.

All you need is something that will run VSTs (for chiptunes there is no real need to swap from Reaper to Reason). You could try synthesizing your own sound with a 3xOSC, but if you'd prefer something simpler you could try these.
