Brazilian Funk/Psych recommendations?
« on: 05 Mar 2010, 09:27 »

Recently purchased Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas from Stones Throw records, and I am smitten.  It is a collection of rare singles from 67-76....  can anyone point me in the direction of any bands with a similar feel?

I also came into this thread solely to suggest Os Mutantes

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

It's a collection of 7" singles from different bands, many whose actual members are unknown.  They have never been reissued before and because or their obscurity the actual band members are unknown.   And I guess I should have stated that Os Mutantes  are the only other band I have heard of in this vein..... oh well.     FWIW it's a great collection that hasn't left my turntable all week, definitely worth checking out if you like psych...  let me just say it starts off with a tripped out Batman theme in which Brazilian Batman goes to Mars, and has a great effected drum break.

A lot of stuff by Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé and Caetano Veloso released late '60s/early '70s is very tropicalia.  If you don't have the collab album Tropicália: ou Panis et Circensis, you should definitely start there. It's basically the defining document of the movement.
