Incidentally, it appears that the QC universe, at least as far as the AnthroPC's go, is covered in this stuff.

And thanks for snipping the part inconvenient to your accusation of myopia; you know, the part where I said
Quote
Refusing to learn about a meal on the assumption that it always includes meat- even if it did, which is definitely not the case with tacos- is just willful ignorance.
My accusation of cultural myopia had nothing to do with your remarks about vegetarians, so the section I snipped was not inconvenient, but simply irrelevant. I was objecting to your apparent assumption that someone would have to be "sheltered" to not know what a taco was. There are probably millions of people who've never heard of them. For example, there are a few Mexican-style restaurants in Beijing (there's even a Hooters in Beijing... :( ), Shenzhen (I think), Shanghai, and of course Hong Kong, but beyond that, not so much. MacDonalds on the other hand...

Faye obviously heard from Marten about Momo's more exotic features, and it made her curious. But it's still a bit creepy.

Trust me, when if it comes to food, nothing, and I do mean nothing, is exactly like a rocky mountain oyster. It ain't often you (not me, thank you) can eat something and then see the 'donor' walking by in the pasture.
Not one for the pleasures of farm-fresh milk? Must be the temperature, huh? It's not like it could come out of the cow cold. Or maybe it's the creaminess, since you just stir the cream in instead of taking it off the top.

I disagree.  :-D if anything faye and angus should hang out more often outside of the CoD

you think Hanners would be happier if she was in a suit like the quarians?

SO here's what I thnk will/should happen.  Angus/Faye bond a little more over the AnthroPC, they talk, they like each other, and they kiss for the first time - just in time for Mari-bear to walk in and see it.  She is shattered, but eventually recovers.

Of course, now that I've written it here, it will never happen, so i probably should have just kept it to myself.

Indeed.

But sometimes, you simply can't help yourself. And you also refuse to participate in the 12-step program; duck the intervention parties; and stand in the lobby of the rehab center until your friends have gotten bored and or had to go to work, then sneak out. And they are friends, 'cause let me tell you, Questionable Content Over-analysis and Prediction Addiction Centers are few and far between. So far, anyway.

Just because most AnthroPC's don't seem to mind the lack of clothes doesn't mean that all of them do. And if one is wearing clothes, the humans should be respectful. I very much agree with JackFaerie here, in that Faye's behavior is completely inappropriate and out of line, especially considering how she herself would react.

it really depends on how Faye views anthro pcs, either as people or just machines.  If it was a person then yes thats very inappropriate however open a machine or looking under their case is normal.  its that whole "is the machine a living being" question I suppose.

Faye's primary experiences with AnthroPCs are from Pintsize. Obviously she is not going to regard them as living, thinking and worthy of respect.

It's a machine.  The gender can be altered by flipping a switch.  Harassment is not something that you can do here, 'cause the definition is "an act or comment that the person knew or reasonably ought to have known would be offensiveto the other person."  Sexual harassment is harassment with a sexual element.

Machines, not being persons cannot be harassed.

Yeah, but there is a difference between opening a maching/looking under the case to fix the AnthroPC and simply looking because one is "curious".

Faye had no reason to look other than she wanted to satisfy her own curiosity. Given that the AnthroPC's have every indication of being sentient beings, Faye most definitely should have, at the very least, asked about it rather than just looking.

Also - MoMo certainly looks like she's been harassed. Or, at the very least, shocked that Faye didn't have enough respect for her to not go about looking at whatever parts she was curious about.

Nah, she doesn't actually wear clothes, that's just the way she's designed.  The only time you'll see her wearing anything different is as a disguise when she doesn't want people to know she's a robot.  But her 'suit' is all integrated.

I doubt AnthroPCs really have much in the way of human rights, even if they are AI they still depend on their programming to function and that programming comes directly from their human user; so it can't necessarily be said that their actions are directly of their own volition.  Moreover, they probably need that human user to act in their stead if someone does something to them that they don't like.  If anything, they're like pets, and are probably afforded rights similar to animal rights.  So you can't beat them or torture them, but they probably wouldn't have a legal standing for simple harrassment.

But the cigar is all too often a flame-ended penis substitute. However…

Yeah, but there is a difference between opening a maching/looking under the case to fix the AnthroPC and simply looking because one is "curious".
People open machines all the time to see what's going on inside them because they're curious—several TV series have been created that cater to this. And that's what anthropcs are, so far as we know: machines. Until we actually have anthropcs with similar abilities, I think it's a bit presumptive to try to come up with a 'Bill of Rights' for them—we simply have no idea how close they are to sentience, and how much the products of clever programming. Actually, come to think of it, since Marten has a fetish-exploiting mother, it's not surprising that Pintsize, who often seems to be manifestation of Marten's id (doing things Marten would like to but feels he can't: dressing up in costume, squeezing breasts, acting completely uninhibited, etc.) would 'develop' an 'interest' in fetish (I note it's directed so as not to strike to close to home, too: Pintsize doesn't go for fruit-crushing in heels, does he? Nor is Veronica likely to show up in the stuff he cruises). It suggests to me that each AnthroPC is programmed to do something of that sort. Momo, for example, is a 'cool' samurai, socially apt, and gets laid, all things Marigold would probably like to do. The Linux anthropc (PX whosname) probably belongs to a guy who has to kiss buttock in a Windows-dominated office every day.

So let's not hop on our chargers just yet. Of course, if we ever do get anthropcs and they are sentient, I'll be glad to be the first to welcome our new diminutive mechanical overlords. And with net access, that's what they will be, too, unless blocked some way (and blocks, like all software and hardware, always fail at some point). (Don't buy it? Read Frederic Pohl's Man Plus). Another case against anthropc sentience, now that I think about it. I sometimes think those people obsessed with AI creation are as self-destructively balmy as the nuts who want to make alien civilizations with superior tech aware of a new source of slaves or real estate (aka Earth).

As to the creepy factor, my god, like animé and manga, which Momo is supposed to embody, aren't replete with creepy? Faye's just being sucked in to the morass. Or moray eel ass, as the case may be.

I wasn't trying to say we needed to create an AnthroPC bill of rights.

Faye's behavior makes Momo uncomfortable. Faye being curious or not, if the machine can express that discomfort, Faye shouldn't be doing it. EDIT: Another way to phrase it: If the machine acts on the behavior that is programmed into it, that means the programmer would be uncomfortable with that sort of behavior, which still means Faye shouldn't be doing it.

Comment? Hell, I thought it was going to be the punchline. At least in the form of an awkward pause and a backward glance that says "I probably don't want to know why, but I think I already do." What happened instead... sort of came out of nowhere.

Fascinating set of observations, but Winslow doesn't seem to fit the pattern of AnthroPCs doing things the owners can't. Winslow is pretty tidy and law-abiding himself, even with the temptations of a humanoid body.

Or, to put it another way, don't do unto other sentients what you wouldn't
have other sentients do (or even suggest) unto her.

Faye. Whiskey. Marigold. Can good possibly come of this?

Fascinating set of observations, but Winslow doesn't seem to fit the pattern of AnthroPCs doing things the owners can't. Winslow is pretty tidy and law-abiding himself, even with the temptations of a humanoid body.
Winslow's from Apple- he 'thinks different'  :-D. More seriously, it's possible Hanners' Dad did something to Winslow to make him more compatible with and/or less threatening to his daughter (it's one thing to act out the owner's id fantasies, and quite another to commit acts that conflict with a mental disorder, especially one like OCD). That may explain why Winslow seems much more child-like than any of the others. He brings to mind Dora, the ship's computer (of the star yacht Dora) in Heinlein's Time Enough for Love. 'She' has been 'kept' a child by her owner (for reasons too complicated to explain here), while other machines are able to develop adult personalities.

Then again, Winslow on a few occaisions seems to be Hannelore's 'superego.' Again, possibly a programing alteration, custom job, etc. done by or made for Hanners' father to assist her in integrating. Then again, such assistance may be a personality option, hence Momo's efforts with Marigold.

Apparently they are sentient.
That may be a convenient label for something that appears sentient but needs input from an owner to accomplish the mimic. I hope so—no matter how cute they are, keeping a fully sentient being as a 'pet' by whatever means (altering it's 'brain' seems most likely) makes me far queasier than Faye peeking up Momo's skirt. And, as I said, sooner or later, "rogue" anthropcs could either take over or severely damage the communications and data infrastructure, either by faulty programs or some ass taking the blocks off just to see what happened.

Having personally thoroughly beaten this to death, I now suggest we forget about it and watch the little buggers go. Or move it to another thread.

Do we know that of other people, or even ourselves?

Very badly.  Especially if there are refried beans in the tacos...

Thinking about it, there is also a pretty good chance that Faye, Angus and Maribear will be pissed too. Remember the 'finest bourbon' arc?

Bourbon, tacos, I hope that they have a plunger.

Plus, Faye now gets to experience the joys of the job search.  Maybe.

Boy, that is gonna be awk-ward, living with your ex-boss and her boyfriend...

And is it me, or is it incredibly hard to know what exactly the time is in the QC universe? Because I thought it was the middle of the day when Faye left to drop off Marigold's wallet...

I guess all the huggin' on Faye wore off on her... so she's trying to rub it off onto Marigold.

As to yesterday's peak under the AnthroPC skirt, I remember when I was little, even well before the age of knowing what the different accoutrement boys and girls had in their knickers was for, whenever I went over to my girl-cousins' houses, if there was a doll there that I hadn't seen before, I hadda peek. It just didn't work for me to not know. Boy doll? Girl doll? Anatomicly incorrect doll? It didn't mean anything once I knew how the doll was manufactured, but I had to do the knowing.

As to today's strip, If you'd like to see Fangus and Mar-Bear get shit-faced drunk and refried bean sloppy, text QUESTCONT1.
If you'd like to see Mar-Bear recall her previous experiment in alcohol consumption and back out at the last moment to go play WoW, leaving Faye and Angus awkwardly alone with alcohol, text QUESTCONT2.
If you'd like to give Raven her first lines of the year, test QUESTCONT3.
Call now.
