Weekly comic thread, March 29 - April 2 2010
« on: 28 Mar 2010, 20:09 »

It's almost midnight and no thread yet.

I've given up on hoping Marigold won't get hurt, and falling back on clinging to the hope she won't be hurt too badly.

Jeph is still drawing crap on toilet paper mulling over the writing, let alone the actual artwork.  It'll be a while.  I'm pondering myself whether I want to stay up for it, or just go to bed and wake up to massive forum drama and lulz.

As a guy, I can safely say that even Angus has no idea where this is going.  We really don't think things through that well in general, and there are a lot of ways to be noble and still be stupid!

I think he'll do the right thing; I hope he'll do it well!

I don't think there's any real consensus on what the hell the right thing would be, in this particular situation.

Edit:  Edited first post based on Jeph's latest, exceptionally important tweet.

I know what's right. Rebuff Marigold, tell her she's too drunk to take seriously, then resolve to pretend like it never, ever happened unless she brings it up. (Of course, Faye's going to barge in and ruin this strategy.)

Meanwhile, if Angus decides he likes the idea of Marigold as his SO, he can make moves to make that happen. But not like this. Because it will be (everybody singa!)

Wouldn't that be a terrible thing to do to Marigold? Yes, she is drunk, but that's still a pretty harsh reaction from her roommate/(possibly) best friend/love interest. There's no way that she could effectively bottle something like that up, save for a blackout, which, come to think of it, would be rather convenient for all involved.

"Marigold, you're drunk.  If you remember and still want this in the morning, come talk to me.  Otherwise, this never happened."  Then in the morning make sure to check on her and give her an opening to bring it up - which gives him all night to think about what he wants to do and figure out how to let her down as gently as possible if he decides to hold out for Faye.

That's about the best thing he could do.  So he'll either freak out and run or go for it now, only to have morning freakouts and badness.

Poor Marigold... until this she reminded me a lot of me, so I want her to be happy.  I wouldn't have the courage to get that drunk around someone I liked for exactly this reason!

I think you are all overestimating Angus's niceness. Yes, he's a nice guy, but he's also a guy who coincidentally says incredibly ass-y things without really thinking about it. Come on, you know? If he said something stupid to her over something LESS awkward and shocking, what makes anyone think that he'll be completely rational and taking her feelings into account? I assume that will be... maybe part of it, but I doubt it will be the foremost thing on his mind when setting her down. I'm sure this situation has triggered Angus's fight or flight response. I'm nearly positive that Faye triggers fight and Marigold triggers "GET. THE. FUCK. OUT OF THERE." flight.

If Angus is sober enough to think straight, and if Marigirl is socially astute enough to take advantage of it, they've got the perfect face-saving maneuver available: either "Hehe, was I ever drunk" or "What happened last night? I don't remember at all".

Yeah, this is more what I am expecting. Though, maybe the drunkenness will make a difference? Though I guess he's not really drunk anymore, thanks to Marigold. Hm.

Ya gotta feel sorry for Angus here.  There was no way, not in any way, shape or form, was he going to win in this situation.

I hope that this doesn't ruin things between him and Marigold - Truth be told he would make a better friend than Boyfriend, and I think she needs that more at this point.

Gods know what this will do for things between Angus and the others - Let alone with Marigold.

Momo-tan should give Angus credit for handling it that well. There's a universe of bad things he didn't do.

Really, Momo, could your social protocol database have suggested anything better?

Oh my god there is no comic thread what is going ooooooooonnnn....

Though I am surprised. I made this about half an hour after the comic was posted. Get on the ball guys, even you East Coasters. Sleep can wait.
What I wrote as I created another thread before this thread was pointed out to me. Curse my inferior title-scanning skills. You might want to reformat the thread name to fit with most of the others, though.

Also, comic: Wowsers. That didn't go well, though it did go as I expected. Angus/emotionally clueless+ Marigold/socially clueless= drama! Having a robot give him the finger was a perfect capper.

Ouch. Honestly, Angus handled it about as well as any normal guy could. He was honest, he was fairly gentle. He wasn't super-suave enough to somehow manage to rebuff her while sparing her most of her embarrassment, but very few people could do that. Considering he's also drunk, he did better than expected.

Poor Marigold though. :/ The worst thing is, unless she blacks out, it'll all feel WORSE in the morning.

OK, he did the right thing.  And about as well as he could.  And the result was not unexpected.

Now, it's all in the follow through.

He really shouldn't just sit there.  A few choice words with Momo would be in order first, but even still drunk, he and Marigold have got to talk more about this!

!!!!!!!   Webcomic GENIUS!   Momo's finger is PERFECT!   L O L !   Hahahaha!

[Undo rant. Initial feedback indicates inappropriateness.]   ...I was really hoping Jeph would find a way to spare Mar-bear's feelings.

Concur with consensual opinion, there was no happy outcome possible.

But I stand by Momo's response - a webcomic Classic Moment!  :)  I want that as my avatar. Tomorrow, after much-needed sleep.

Empathetic listening? An "I'm flattered but" reaction? A compliment before setting her down? A self-blaming "Did I lead you on" speech?

unfortuantley there is no better way to handle that in which momo wouldnt flip him off.  but I agree I think its her friend protocol overiding her social (or its a combo of both)

I have to say I would have done the same thing (and I have in the past and it always makes you feel like a shit when you do)

And the wank begins.

Angus, you stupid fucking SHITBRAIN!   You should DIE an IMMEDIATE, PROFOUNDLY PAINFUL DEATH, because you just hurt her far more than that.  She doesn't think she has any chance for love with anyone else in the world, and you just bashed her dreams in, betrayed her trust, your friendship, ooooo i can't even type straight right now........ GFDYTH

WTF? Overreacting much? Poor guy was thrown into this situation unawares and it's not all daisies and roses on his side either. He did the best he could.  Knowing Marigold's innermost fears and anxieties is not his responsibility, and neither is sacrificing his entire store of emotional comfort to coddle hers.  She's not as fragile as THAT (really? You think she processes a polite rejection as more worse than a "profoundly painful death"?)  and if she were, no one would be held responsible for it, least of all someone who's just a roommate and kinda-friend. If she were THAT fragile, she would have to be locked up in a sanitarium somewhere.

Moreover, how turning someone down when you are not interested in them betrays "trust" or "friendship," I have no idea. I hadn't realized that I was obligated to date anyone who asked me, anyway--or that anyone I asked out was obligated to date me if they were a friend.

Too bad it didn't work. A disturbingly large number picked the 2nd option. I mean, I understand the reasoning, but it's still a little mean (Yes, to a fictional character. Green Acres is nice, why do you ask?) to make that the ONE choice you pick.

Marigold fell into her own trap; she practically had wedding bells ringing in her ears before she even talked to Angus about how she felt.  She won't realize it for a while, but she never even considered Angus's feelings, simply assuming he'd love her regardless.  Actually, it could be worse; she may have simply mentally negated any thought of failure.

Momo may technically have software which could tell her who's right and who's wrong in this situation.  But, seriously, where genders are concerned, It's bros before hos, and chicks before dicks.  Angus is right in what he did, but so what?  He hurt her friend/master's feelings.  So the little robot girl tells the guy to fuck off, then goes running off to console her friend with Haagen-Dazs.

If I were Angus, and sober, and more clueful than he usually is, and thinking fast, I'd ask Momo-tan for advice.

Well Marigold is, however this is possible (I never met any woman like that, do those exist ?!? Seriously ?!? At all ??), new to this "business".

So its expected she is clumsy.

Though Angus is also very clumsy and insensitive, but thats just how the average guy is. :-D

Also, this from Jeph's twitter feed.  Good for a few laughs - I needed it, myself...

I love those. I'll need a copy to edit for any time I need to tell someone a hard truth.

Or an electric shock to erase her memory. I believe electro-convulsive treatment can cause memory loss?

Can somebody please explain the second one to me? And is the third related to a certain work?

To address Angus for a moment as well; I think there's nothing anyone in the comic, or this forum for that matter, could say, or do, to Angus, to make him feel anymore like a steaming pile of shit than he already feels.  There's absolutely nothing that will make you feel lower than hurting someone you care about, even in an unavoidable situation like this.  Angus is fairly protective of Marigold, I'd say he almost plays the role of a big brother for her.  But just like Marigold didn't take his feelings into account, he didn't realize how she felt, until it was far too late.

Number 2 is The Usual Suspects and number 3 is The Sixth Sense.
