I imagine there'd be quite a few applicants for that position. But Faye'd probably not be a good choice (Unless, of course, you want Sven to be fit for harem duty).

Now there's an idea; Kosh voice-changer masks. I mean, they have one for nearly everyone else these days....

I wonder if she had a family situation that was dysfunctional one way or another. Can a vicious "peer" group by itself create self-esteem problems as bad as Marigirl's? It seems more likely that she had self-esteem problems going into school and the merciless attacked where they saw weakness.

That's what I meant when I said 'that we know of' (somewhere, I know I said it somewhere) about Marigold. She didn't just hatch like this. As for her isolationist tendencies being peer—related, I don't think a peer group can do this all by itself (although the wretched buggers can do a helluva job)— I'd guess an indifferent or a 'you gotta learn to suck it up' sort of parent is needed to help things along. Or, just as bad, an over-sheltering parent. The parental game seems to be rather similar to a tightrope act.

And, freely contradicting myself, I'll add there may be some psychological issue that, combined with the above-mentioned, brought Marigold here.

Really it could be all, some or none of these things. People, they're complected-like, you know? Even the ones who aren't real.

Soooo many variables here - where to begin?

It depends on a lot of things beyond her self-assuredness when she started school.  She may have been well adjusted at home, then early on gotten the reputation as "the kid who eats paste" or some such thing.  Merciless teasing can ensue, and depending on how she handles it, it can lead to problems (or not).

Another problem often occurs when you move, especially if it's not at a transition year (in the middle of grade school or high school, for example).  You're cast into a tightly knit social group as an outsider.  The amount of self confidence you have is immaterial in a case like that.

She may have had a circle of good friends (based on gaming or something) that she hung with which split up when they all went to college, leaving her alone.

While the family life may have contributed to her current state, it isn't the only source of problems like this.  Even in a loving, supportive family, there can be oversheltering so that a child winds up immature for his or her age, and essentially becomes disfunctional all on their own!

I'm betting on only child, parents both work in professional jobs (Dad probably in computers or IT, since we heard her talk about a website for his company). Grew up doing a lot of stuff by herself, got teased when she made blunders growing up, learned to keep to herself. Maybe got hooked on computers/video games in HS, got Momo as a graduation present, moved in with Angus because parents wanted her out of the house. I'd also bet that Mom and Dad may have been either scatterbrained or packrats.

...not, of course, that I'm basing this from personal experience, of course. Some of it is from observations of friends and relatives. (Okay, the only child part is mine.)

Actually, Dad's probably not in computers or IT, else why have Marigold do his website?  He probably runs a small business, and got her to do this for the increased traffic and to put her on the payroll.

got Momo as a graduation present
In 1298 Pintsize said that Momo-tan is Sony's newest model, so if she's a graduation present then either Marigold is a recent graduate or Sony has let their AnthroPC line stagnate. 1534 made it sound like college was a while back.
