Coming out of lurking to remark how freaking manly and chiseled Angus looks in that last panel. Oh dear lord. Back to lurking now.
He looks like he should be busy bench-pressing buses, or something.

"Pap smears for everybody" reminds me of the time I came home and there was a message on my answering machine from a doctor's office telling me that my Pap test results were normal. I though this was funny since I'd never been to that doctor and I'm from the cervix-challenged gender.

Okay, that trumps the month of spam-mails I got urging me to seek relief from painful menstrual cramps. Not that I've not done that, of course, but the cramps were actually happening to someone else. Makes me wonder if men really are watched when we go to buy the pads, pamprin, etc.

Motorboating?  :?

It involves onamonapia and large breasts.

I don't believe it took two days for this to register in my brain - finals must be getting close...

Onomatopoeia is when the word sounds like what it is, like "boom", "pop", "mumble" or "roar".

So motorboat, though a very descriptive noun, isn't onomatopoeia.

However, "pfbltblbltfblftblfbltfbtlbt" is.

I didn't say that it was onomatopoeia, I said it involved onomatopoeia!

Yes I realized that as well, but it was already up there.

I want credit for not complaining about the spelling. :-D

(Actually, I sympathize—for whatever reason, I discovered a few years back that word's a pain in the ass to look up, even with wildcards).

...even though it's long, I would think "onomatopoeia" is a common enough word that it wouldn't fall under the usual sesquipedalian rules.  Like "schadenfreude."

Possibly. Might explain the offer I got for a cream to make my breasts firmer and fuller.

Near Lurker, that may be the case now, but I know I had the devil's own time finding the spelling two-three years ago, enough so that I stuck it in a textfile where I keep words that are difficult to look up. The key problem is that I, like whoever came up with the misspelling Akronnick is using, had, was that i thought it was o-n-a, not o-n-o (after I put that in, my mac's dictionary yielded it up). I see now that quite a few sites actually reference the misspelling Akronnick employs—in fact, Wikipedia has it set up as an alias to the page for the correct spelling of the word—which tells me many people have had similar problems.

I tried Google's auto-complete and that's what it came up with, but the consensus of the links failed to yield a clearly correct spelling.

That's when I said 'fuck-it' and decided to spell it [puts on sunglasses] onamonapoetically.

I don't know, I remember bickering in the nineties with my father over whether it was "o-no-mah-to-poe-ia" or "o-no-mat-o-poe-ia," and we're not exactly linguists.

Methinks Pennelope is dissatisfied with her job. At a minimum, with the part of it that involves listening to Faye.

Faye has a point, though.  Original is exciting, any copy work is immediately boring.  Most true art is one-offs!

Yeaaahhhhh, gotta side with Faye on this one. After all, the part that she enjoys isn't the simple fitting of metal pieces together (or else she may as well have gone into trade metalworking), but the creative and inventive aspect of sculpting.  Take the creativity out of it so that all that's left is rote copy-work, and it may as well be any other menial job.

Is there maybe some envy in Pennelope's reaction? She sees someone who might escape from a dead-end job, one which she herself isn't really happy with (1138).

So does Dora

Wait - about her premiums?

'cause the whole "show the costumers customers" thing is BS, she comissioned a Faye original for the coffeeshop, not a sales opportunity for herself!  I mean, it was a nice bit of syzygy, but it's not Faye's job to crank T-Rex-pressos out, nor was there any agreement between them!

I can see Faye's side in this-making copies of a original piece of art, especially by hand, is less fun that creating the original art in the first place. Plus when you start doing something for money it generally becomes less fun anyway.

However, actually receiving money, especially in the amount Faye was offered, IS fun, so she needs to suck it up and get to work on that copy.

PENELOPE SMASH!

i can see faye's point too. it's just that said point is irrelevant and asinine. she's looking at $1800 for probably about ten hours work at an absolute maximum, the hard part having already been done. that is worth a bit of boring copy work.

Doesn't have to be an exact copy, the v-raptor expresso maker and bagel slicer will probably satisfy the cusotmer, Or she could have a sauropod variant that'll steam the milk for of a cappucino.

I agree with Penny here - This is definitely a "suck it up Princess" moment.

God dammit, the... original cast is back.

The prototype is supposed to be for working out all the bugs in your plans, blueprints, schematics, instructions, etc. (PBSIE). Thereby, you are supposed generate NEW PBSIE which are, if not precise for the new, working prototype, at least more accurate.

Using PBSIE 2.0, the second should be easier, but never without more idea-inducing, modification-leading, design-tweaking activities to keep it interesting for the put-upon artiste.

TL;DR version: Shutup and make the one that'll make you money, idiot!

Didn't Dora "Commission" this one anyway? Faye should already have *that* cash in the bank.

The new art on Penelope looks good, but I think the new glasses would have worked better on Marigold. (I really hate those thick square frames, and Faye had them first anyway.)

Premiums?  It's a small coffee shop. No way does she offer health insurance.

And with only four employees (including herself), I don't think she has to yet.

Besides, health insurance generally isn't like car insurance, where the more you use it the more you have to pay for it. Usually it's a flat rate no matter how much you use it up to a limit (at which point the company either stops covering things or drops you and you're stuck holding the bill).

She runs a business where members of the public can just walk in; she has some manner of public liability insurance for that. Also, she employs people who aren't her, so she has liability on them too. Or she's been blackmailing the local inspectors again....

I kinda agree with Penelope here.  I mean, I know we're all the 'Generation of laziness', but come on.  Faye's a low wage service industry worker, and now she has a chance to be a real entrepeneur and make actual money, and she's complaining that it'd be too boring?

Okay Faye, but when you're a sixty year old waitress with no retirement savings, don't blame anyone but yourself.

As an artist myself, I understand where Faye is coming from. I personally hate doing most commissioned work. It is boring and artistically unsatisfying, especially when it is something you have already done once.  The only thing I hate more (in this context at least) is flash art tats, which ties into the whole "done it already" thing.

But, Pen is right. Making a living at what you do is something most people would kill for.

YES.  Also, by doing the commissioned piece, Faye will start to actually make a name for herself as an artist, and will therefore potentially get future commissioned originals.  Plus, unless she was talking out her ass about her sculpture being a prototype, she was already planning to make another one (albeit a ginormous version), sooo . . . yeah.  Please log onto quitcherbitchin.com, Faye.

Whether Pen-a-lope is envious or not, her 'rage, rage against the impracticality of the artist' thing (which she usually aims at Wil), is at the core of her characterization.  Impressive that her yelling has cowed Faye to the point where she doesn't seem to notice Pen-Pen is poking her chest -- I guess the hearing loss issue is more distracting.  Oh, and I now want to see a steel cage match between Penelope and Cosette.

She can be envious AND still have a valid point, you know. And my money's on fear (of failure? of success? of change?!) being the real motivation in Faye's ridiculous whining. She made $1800 and got a gallery showing THREE MINUTES after bringing her first work in ages into a public space and she's complaining about being bored?! She seriously needed to get called on that! GO PENNY GO.    :-D

I think Azurite is right. Faye would hardly be the first character to hesitate about doing something good due to fear of success.

Dora may have been talking about worker's comp premiums, or QC Massachussets may have an employer mandate for health insurance instead of the individual mandate that they do in our world. Dora's mentioned a health plan before. Or Dora may simply have been kidding.

Or not, in the end it's still intended to be a moment of funny.

I agree that Penelope seems to have benefited the most from the new art. And, as always, love the rants. Maybe too much.

And of course Faye will find a way to self-sabotage. As I've said before, it's always two steps forward, one (or more) back with her. With the forward movement she's done with Angus and the espresso machine, I'm actually surprised Faye hasn't spontaneously transported back to the Spanish-American War. And if I had to put up with all the grousing we all know Faye does about working at CoD, I'd be ranting now, too. Burst eardrums might well be the least of it—she'd also have to wipe off the flecks of foam spewing from my mouth.

Edit: Why do I love the panel of Faye quailing before the onslaught so much?

On the other hand, is it really any of Pennelope's business?

Raoullaferre is right, Faye is not the type to make steady progress.

As a friend of a couple of self-proclaimed artists, I can comfortably say that Penelope is grossly simplifying things here. All artists have some sort of emotional connection to the things they create. Creating a duplicate of something would (at least in my case) totally destroy that emotional connection. That's kind of what makes it art, and not something thats just manufactured.

Can anyone here imagine if Da Vinci realized what a masterpiece the Mona Lisa was and decided to set up a studio that did nothing but crank out copies? It would cease to be art.
