Each May. One Album. One Day. (2010 bitch)
« on: 10 May 2010, 17:07 »

So, it's been 11 days into May and no one has done this yet, and I thought that maybe this year I would actually give it an honest shot.

Is it really that time of year again already? Why yes, yes it is. It's time for the secondthird annual 24 Hours May challenge! For those of you who already familiar with this, here's last years (incomplete) archive:
24 Hours, May 2008
There's two albums missing, but they'll probably appear someday.

The goal is simple: You have 24 hours to make a record.

When you're comfortable, start the clock. You then have 24 hours to produce a record by any means neccessary. When you're done, you post it here. At the end of the month, all the entries get posted on a blogger archive of the event.
This time there are no restrictions. It can be as long or short as you want, you can include as many covers or samples as you wish. Throw up a remix album if that's how you swing.

Get those creative juices flowing! Edit: Unless you're kinda busy or stressed out, like me. Then you don't have to. The rest of you? I'll fucking cut you if you don't take part.

So yeah, people should do this! Cause it's a pretty cool idea and we shouldn't let it die!

(Sorry Sox if you were planning on doing something phenomenal to get this kickstarted)

in order to keep with the previous years, I am going to claim that I'm gonna make an album but never actually do it.

So, this is me, claiming I'm gonna make an album. You'll have to wait to find out that I didn't actually do it though.

(seriously I'm actually gonna try this year, I swear)

We did this last year and we're still gigging off a few of the songs we wrote, so we're definitely giving it a shot this year.

I was planning on doing this again but contributing something non-terrible for the first time, but then Sox didn't post the thread and I decided he thought my contribution was so terrible that it invalidated the legitimacy of doing this.

If that was why (it wasn't), hopefully whatever I can do this year will invalidate last year's submission.

I'd be up for it again. I'll have to get done with Finals before I can be creative.

Also I think the last one burnt out Sox pretty hardcore and he doesn't want to do the work he had to do the first year.

Too busy this year. As opposed to last year where I just didn't want to and the year before where I made a weird experimental noise/news broadcast album.

Considering we started late, why not open it up to May and June? I mean, we essentially did that last year, and as Sox pointed out then you can do it whenever you want really.

I'm going to try to find time to do this, but it might have to wait until early June. We'll see.

if i can get a delay pedal, guitar, and a mic to record with i will record an ambient album for you kids. if not, well, ill probably record one when i get all of these things, as one of my future goals is to play ambient music by myself. (shane i have 0 clues as to when i can afford to have you build me an ax.)

that shouldn't be an issue, everyone should be able to do it, in fact there's a facebook group, invite your friends to it!

I'm fine with opening it up to June as well, I thought the main reason it was may was because it rhymed with day?

okay so that's a couple of days to LEGITIMATELY PURCHASE reason 4 then the two months to figure it out.

Not sure bout the book part tho. Unless there's a handy online guide somewhere in whose direction you could point me? :)

This is kind of a dumb question, but the writing can be done beforehand, right?  It's just the production that needs to happen in a single day?

I've always been under the impression that everything needs to be done in one day, but really, who am I to stop you? The main point is that we get something creative right?

I've done it in the past where I've made the album over several 4- or 6-hour periods on different days, as my schedule allows.

Yeah I think in the strictest sense, the rules are that you write, record and produce the whole thing in a single 24-hour period in May. But at the end of the day it's all about having fun and no one is going to berate you for bending the rules to suit yourself!

I want to do this so badly. Maybe I can dedicate a Saturday to the process. All strategically-placed mics in my apartments getting distorted signals of my banging on pots and pans and shouting.

Or all acoustic guitar wheedly wheedly.

We had the first of our four six-hour sessions today. We recorded three unuseable takes of songs that we plan to re-record and one that's perfectly serviceable but my colleague refuses to let the vocal pass and wants to re-record it.

DAMN HIM.

I just finished my third 6-hour session: 28.5 minutes of music done, and they're somewhat decent.  This post will be a placeholder for things to come, once I finish that last 1:30 and throw together some art!

The album is (very) loosely based off of a thread from the forum from ages ago. I would link to it but the search feature's down! Expect a mediaf!re link by Friday.

Apparently by Friday I meant later today, so here you are:

My cousin and I have done projects for the last two years and were planning on doing so even if a thread didn't appear here. Now we have a place to post the work.

We're starting Friday night/Saturday morning at 12am.

Edit: And from what I understand, it's usually done in May because that way the title rhymes. I am more than sure that if you want to do this project in a different month, no one will object.

Edit 2: FWIW, here are the rules from last year.

The goal is simple: You have 24 hours to make a record.

When you're comfortable, start the clock. You then have 24 hours to produce a record by any means neccessary. When you're done, you post it here. At the end of the month, all the entries get posted on a blogger archive of the event.

Link to last year.

Link to 2008.

So what I'll do is try and break it up a little. Hopefully I can do something.

Logic Is For Zombies - Sketches of Songs

And again, we didn't record more than six songs, there was just no more time left ;-)

Tracks:
1. The Waiting Room
2. In Exile
3. Want me?
4. Idiot.
5. Freedom Whine
6. Sunrise Jam

We got our project wrapped up at around 7pm yesterday, so the tracks are all recorded, but they're still on the mixing unit. A party ended up happening at my cousin's place after we finished, so he didn't get a chance to mix them down into files. As soon as I get the word that he has got them posted to Mediafire, I'll put it up in this space.

Okay, so in the spirit of getting it done before the end of May I decided to meet up with my friend who I was going to originally do this with and just record something stupid since I was going to be spending the rest of the day with those people who were visiting, and tomorrow I have to deal with arranging for travelling and I'm travelling on tuesday. So we sat in his living room for an hour and a half and just recorded us reading a bunch of random stuff we found in his flat while the other person improvised some music over it.

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?zcmjzmnmymg
things read are:
the entire wikipedia introduction page
a random page from hume's "a critique of reason"
a bunch of footnotes from "the sound patterns of english"
The back of Desire by Bob Dylan - which was apparently a poem by Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg
Introduction to Carbon Sediments and Rocks, selected reading section
Nibelungenlied
A concise anglo saxon dictionary, the supplemented words.

In hindsight, I think we're going to try to do this again but semi-seriously with a consistent text or something, and some pre-planned music.

I'm also learning ableton at the moment, so hopefully I'll be able to make something decent with that, but it'll have to wait till June :(

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Well, fuck, I already have an EP's worth of covers that I recorded during the month of May but none of them were the same day, I'm kinda a whore for producing and overdubbing as some of you might recall. :\

Pat, you and I have previously discussed how I am very much a 'put the fucking tape on and we'll do it in one take' where you're more of a 'I will spend the next week re-recording this A chord' type.

And I hate you for it  :-D

Here's the finished product from my collaboration, the second album from our group from last year. The Spiderman ball on the cover represents our friend Lawrence, who collaborated with me on half of our closing two-part song but wasn't there for any of the recording.

Our album from last year was infinitely superior, and I can repost if anyone wants to hear it. Between this record and the last one I think we actually have some decent material. As with last year we went for quantity over quality, mostly doing live takes. I think only one song had more than three takes and the editing/mixing was severely limited since we recorded on a dodgy mic (note that it is far louder in the left speaker than the right. I couldn't be arsed to double track it and mix it right and left).
