Yeah, great. I love Valve's games and all, but I feel like I'm the only person left not tripping over myself to give them a sloppy blowjob whenever they do something vague and cryptic. I'm just tired of the constant dry hump because it takes them forever to develop anything. I'll be excited when the game is actually out and I can fucking play it.

I'm not judging you, I'm just saying that my patience with their pattern of announcement/viral marketing/inevitable delays is wearing extremely thin. When Portal 2 finally comes out I'll be first in line. Episode 3 I'm less hyped for, but I'm sure it'll be great too. Well, unless it's like Episode 1.

Episode 1 was good.  It wasn't as good as Episode 2, but hey, it was more Half Life 2.  Who can disagree with more Half Life 2?

Really, they just need to get on with it. They have enough funds. They have good developers. The game engine is mature.

Can't say I'm not excited though.

I don't see how they could secretly have a game ready to release in 8 days without anything leaking out about it before now.  Maybe they mean June 14 NEXT YEAR

Perhaps the answer is... somewhere in the middle????  :-o :-o :-o

As far as viral marketing in concerned, if the alternative is giving a Kotaku interview, showing a little gameplay and being all "woo yeah buy our game it's awesome" then hell yeah, I'll take a slightly more clever photoshop-filter thing instead. I am more fed up with all the other bog-standard release advertising.

Again, this is a false dichotomy. You can do far more with prerelease information with a game than a few interviews and a trailer or two, but that's not the point. My issue isn't that Valve's marketing is viral, it's that everyone fucking creams their goddamn jeans as soon as Valve releases some poster with a vague silhouette of the G-Man or whatever. They're still being marketed to, yet they somehow act like Valve is exempt from the kind of criticism that everyone else gets. As much as I like their games (and I really do, I want to stress this), I really don't understand why Valve is such a sacred cow for so many people.

jens covered it, mostly. bryan, you've got an interesting point, but to be fair to valve the reason everyone gets excited about a mysterious bit of nothing from valve is that 1) it's usually at least semi-clever and 2) they've earned it by releasing like nothing but top-shelf material for over a decade.

you're right that it's really a different way to feed the exact same hype machine, and that valve manages to do so at the drop of a hat with little to no information.

I don't even think this is true. Like I said, when Portal 2 comes out I will be there on Day 1. I'm a little skeptical at how well the gameplay concepts will hold up for a full-length retail game (since that's how they're selling it, at the very least) but I'll buy it anyway if for no other reason than the Eric Wolpaw/Chet Faliszek team are the best writers in the game industry not named Tim Schafer or Chris Avellone.

I certainly wouldn't call Episode 1 top-shelf, but otherwise I agree. Still, if people think Valve's 'nice-guy' persona is entirely altruistic they're extremely naive. On top of that, even if this announcement is finally for Episode 3, when's it coming out? If you think it's any earlier than a year from now, or to reiterate three and a half years after their last 3-hour expansion, then you're kidding yourself.

Episode 1 was really boring.

Anyway at this point I'm just hoping they get Ep 3 out the door so they can establish a game on a newer iteration of Source. It lasted a good many years (I still think it looks better than most UE3 games) but it is now getting way too old.

I'm honestly surprised more people aren't licensing CryEngine in comparison to Source or UE3. There's gameplay footage of Crysis 2 that came out of last week's GameTrailers TV that looks goddamn amazing. And it's the 360 version, no less. I wonder if Epic is just more aggressive with marketing their tech.

Might have to do with art pipelines. I guarantee you the amount of effort it takes to build a level with Cryengine is more than what it takes to build in UE3.

Has anyone questioned whether this image is actually legitimate? Everyone is going crazy about it, and it looks quite real...but it could quite easily be faked. For example, Rock Paper Shotgun are a little sceptical: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/06/05/episode-three-rumours-appear-like-a-ghost/#more-31466

Yes, in a nutshell. Although the chick is such a bullet sponge it wasn't a case of "saving" so much as "using her as a distraction".

For me episode 1 was the one where you ran through a derelict hospital shooting hordes of head-crab zombies with all the shotgun ammo that had been thoughtfully left lying around the place.

I played through 2 just now, it seems like what I thought was 1 and 2 was 2, and 1 is what I thought the ending to the original was. Kinda confusing. 2 is much more enjoyable this time around, though, and I have to agree, it's the better episode by far.

I miss controlling ant-lions, though. That was one of the best things about the original game, attacking that fort with fucking monster-bugs, wrecking everything. good times. Overall, the fun-ness of the games ranks the original above ep. 2, and ep. 2 above ep. 1.

What do you guys think will be in ep. 3? I know that Freeman is bound for that ship, but will the game teleport us back to Xen, or something like that? What made episode 2 so much better than 1 was in big part the new kinds of enemies - that's always a big plus. Episode 1 had zombies and combine, and that was kind of old news. I want to see some teleporting headcrabs based on aperture science-tech, or maybe a new treck through the low-gravity fields of Xen. Or maybe a ride to the combine homeworld. Pretty much anything else than just room-to-room fights on a boat filled with combine elite troops, or another ride with the über-gravity gun. That was a cool mechanic the first time around. I want something fresh. And they've had more than enough time to make something fresh, dammit!

Fair points.

I definitely want some more hunter action, though.  Those guys had to be some of the most fun enemies I've ever played against in a shooter game, especially on Hard mode.

But as for new enemies, Valve has said explicitly that those Advisors (those things that look like the Brainbugs from Starship Troopers that float around in spaceship cribs) are going to be playing a more major role in Ep. 3.  And also some official concept art was released that featured Freeman with a crowbar staring down an Advisor in or near the wreckage of the Borealis.  So as for new enemies I think we'll be facing Advisors, and if the few scenes involving them over the course of HL2 and its episodes are any indication then I think it should be fun.

In all honesty, it seemed like Ep. 1 was kind of the hastily thrown-together "Oh, you want us to continue this storyline?" Episode. It exists only to bridge the gap between the end of HL2 and the continuation of the story.

Ep. 2 had some innovation and was highly enjoyable. Hopefully Ep. 3 will introduce more and really get the story moving. I want to know where all the Advisors were going when the Citadel exploded. I want to know exactly what they were doing there.

Yes, that made sense, and I agree. And if anyone wants to say "Well, you still have to pay $60 for their games" thats such a bullshit reason for them being not altruistic. They still need to make money and feed themselves/their families. I don't expect an artist to just drop a masterpiece in my lap for free.

Anyway, re: valve's marketing.

I don't care if you are selling me a video game, a cheese burger, or at god damn toilet cleaning service, if your marketing campaign is more than "Woo yeah buy our shit heres some info about it! It costs this much! yeah! You need it!" I'm gonna be pleased. I don't want some boring old same as everyone else advertising. I want something neat, surprising, creative, and clever. Valve does this. Yeah, its viral marketing, but viral marketing is interesting! A long while back, Nine Inch Nails did this thing where they'd just post an address or some vague information on their website, and if you showed up at that address at the right time, you'd get stuff(like more info, or tickets to a secret show, etc). This is interesting! This is fun! It brings a little bit of light and color into a world that some people seem to want to remain plan and boring.

Yeah, they are giving us puzzles and we have to solve them in order to be advertised to, but isn't that a lot more fun and interesting than some company just saying "btws the game comes out on this date and is this much. You played the first ones so you know how to play this one. Just go preorder it already, we'll give you some shit maybe."? I'd rather be advertised to in a way that is fun and challenging than a way that is boring and assumes I'd rather not think too much.

(and this is coming from someone who is super interested in advertising, and spends her days off reading about how popular businesses have advertised their products in the past. Remember The Subservient Chicken?)

ep 1 was a case of plotline triumphing over action dynamism. as soon as you exit the service tunnels though it was really great, the action in the ruined aboveground city 17 (fight with the gunship, creepy zombine hospital, trainyard strider battle) was fairly clever, i thought.

except for the parts where you have to push cars into holes to stop the waves of ant-lions, I quite liked episode 1.  It did a good job of making me actually feel like I had to hurry because oh my god this city is going to blow, even though obviously I had all the time I could want to get out of there.  Also the parts in the citadel at the start and the very ending on the train were some of the best moments in any of the Half Life games.

Really?  I loved putting those cars on top of those holes.  Maybe you just suck with the gravity gun, Nick.  :{P

All said and done, I'm kind of crossing my fingers that there won't be any Antlions in Ep. 3.  Yes, I loved storming prison with them, and fighting their queens, and pluggin up their holes, and then fighting their queen again, and then going into their tunnels and running from their queen, and then fighting them off in an awesome battle with vortigaunts (which is 10x more fun on hard mode, btw), and then fighting two queens, but I'm getting rather bored of them.  More Hunters, please!!

Nah.

Gotta agree with Emaline, I vastly prefer the stuff they did with portal to "woo, preorder and you get stuff that makes the game easier!". If they want me to get exited about a game, they'd better make the marketing exiting.

Speaking of Portal, guess what? In the most predictable move in fucking forever, Portal 2's been delayed to next year! Get ready for another 15 month dry hump until it comes out where it will be followed by a 3 month period of lazy meme parroting all over the internet!

I guess I'll just have to wait patiently then.

I prefer "This is when it comes out if you want to buy it," over either scenario. Basically, I don't like people trying to sell me on things and the more elaborate it gets the less interested I am. Marketing really falls under two categories: things that make me aware of something I might desire and stuff that ultimately is a waste of my time.
