I'm excited about it, but the trailer made me suddenly think - how funny and horrifying would it be if, in the film, they changed the ending and Harry died? Everyone would be furious.

They didn't. There were press photos that showed Harry and Ginny in old person makeup, meaning they shot the epilogue. Which sucks, because I hated the epilogue, but at least it means they probably stuck to the book pretty well.

As I recall, you don't actually see Lupin die. Harry just sort of stumbles onto his corpse in the Great Hall, snuggled up to Tonks.

Which is pretty irresponsible of them as parents and made me lose a lot of respect for both their characters. I get the allegory between them and Harry's parents, but HP's 'rents were betrayed in their own (supposedly protected) home while Lupin/Tonks dashed headlong into what was essentially the Last Battle with little to no regard as to their recently birthed child. I mean wasn't Tonks only a few weeks out of her pregnancy at that point anyway? What is she doing fighting?

...I've had way too many debates about these books as a series.

Actually I agree about Lupin and Tonks in a way but I guess they were fighting for the future of their son not to be under tyranny and knew he would be taken care of by one of the survivors.

Well yes, he discovers they've been killed in the hour that Voldemort gives him to go into the Forest, but I imagine they will show dead Lupin and it will be saaaaaaaaaaaaad.

I kind of consider Lupin and Tonks' patricipation to be similar to a lot of men who served in the world wars - if you didn't enlist, you were considered a coward and there was a lot of guilt/shame. Like May said, fighting for a better world for their son and loved ones.

Considering how long Lupin had been fighting and that Tonks is an Auror, them fighting made sense to me. It's what they do. Do I wish one of them had the sense to stay home, yes, but Teddy got a better family when it came to Harry - he lived with his grandmother as well as having Harry and all the Weasley's as well.

Those are good points, it just still hit me as a little irresponsible of them as characters and, on a more reality-based level, like Rowling was fishing for even more emotional heartstrings to tug.

All of this being said of course book 7 is still probably my favorite and whenever I reread it I usually do it in one or two sittings.

The thing I disliked most about the deaths of Lupin and Tonks was that they were just shown dead, as if they were completely unimportant characters. I know that JKR was going for a "this is part of the horror of war" thing with Harry walking in and seeing so many people dead, but it struck me as lazy and disrespectful writing and took me out of the scene for a moment. It's not that I can't see them both fighting, and it's not that their deaths are implausible in context, it's the fact that we don't see what happens or even hear about any details later. I thought the characters deserved better than 'whatever, they're dead' -- they deserved closure. Even Fred gets short shrift, but at least we know what happens.

After the final volume came out and JKR said she was done, a friend of mine said if she decided to start a new series in the same world, the first book would be called Teddy Lupin and the Pointless Deaths of My Parents.

Regarding the final movies, I am looking forward to them, but I'm trying not to have high expectations.

Hedwig made me so sad, but that was the one that I had to read a few times before I understood just what happened. Which in turn made it even worse. But I cried over Dobby and Fred the most.

I had to put the book down and go get a glass of water. It felt like the world had gone turvy-topsy. All of a sudden, everyone was at risk. It was the moment when I realized this was really the end.

Yeah I couldn't believe she did that. I thought that was probably the most shocking death of the book, and like Linds, I remember having to read it several times to understand what actually happened.

What gets me is that people still think this is a kids' series. I was what, seventeen, and I cried at every death and will probably cry buckets at the film. Seven year olds are going to be traumatised for life.

I just remember buying the book at midnight and reading it straight through as soon as I got home, I think I finished around 6 am or so. Then I crashed hardcore, woke up, and read it again. As far as I recall I didn't cry about Hedwig, but I was shocked when it happened because really who expects the owl to die? But I'm pretty sure I at least teared up a bit when Dobby died, and Fred.

The winner of most tears goes to Dumbledore in book six, though. I straight up had to stop reading because I couldn't see through all of the tears.

Yeah, Sirius dying is the saddest part of the series for me. He's one of my favorite characters and him going so soon really sucked, especially since he just kind of disappeared instead of having a really understandable, concrete death. Sirius and Fred and George are my absolute favorites, so at least 1/3 of them lived...

Most tears was Sirius, but not at the time of his death. It was when Harry was having a breakdown in Dumbledore's office afterwards, throwing things and being furious at the world, trying to find someone to blame.

I cried two times, the first time was in book four when everyone pops out of Voldemort's wand and whats-er-face reporter witch or something says something encouraging to Harry, the second was Dobby.

I cried fairly well throughout the books. I probably cried the most though at the end of the fourth, though I think Dobby was fairly close. but none of them have had a constant heart string moment on rereading that Umbridge attacking Hagrid in book 5 does, no matter how many times I reread that book, no matter how much I expect it I am always on the verge of angry tears in that scene.
This great calm giant, rarely angry and never violent, finally lets loose and starts going apeshit. Not because they're attacking him, but because of fang and McGonagall , then at the end he still goes back for the faithful dog.
I'm not crying now, totally not...I'm just tired, and theres something in my eye, totally.

anywho, back on topic, I still haven't forgiven the underworld crossover that was of Prisoner of Azkaban or the fucking dragon fight scene or living forest in Goblet of Fire. To the point that I haven't seen Order of the Phoenix or Half Blood Prince, so I see no reason to see this.

Order of the Phoenix is actually quite good, much stronger than Goblet of Fire. Half Blood Prince was good up until the end which I felt they kind of fucked up.

Order of the Phoenix seemed like the most emotionally tangled and realistic one (echoes of this with Ron and Lupin in Deathly Hallows), but then, I'm one of the minority of fans I know who thought it was high time for Harry to finally have his shouty breakdown at Grimmauld Place. The kid had a lot of trauma to deal with.

Also, Order of the Phoenix has Umbridge, who is just so delightfully easy to hate, and yet pretty believable as an actual human compared to some of the Death Eaters.

Yeah the 3rd and 4th movies were terrible but David Yates (the director of movies 5 - 7) has got it pretty much down. The 5th was my favorite for a while and the 6th is absolutely fantastic up until the last 10 minutes or so. Slughorn was positively magnificent. I did really hate the way they handled the ending, although I get that that was intentional in order to be as demoralizing as possible.

I hate that some people say Order of the Phoenix is boring and nothing happens. I read that book on the train home from Ottawa and cried so much when Sirius died that the attendant came over and asked me if I was okay. I held up the book and he said, "Oh, I understand."

I feel like the movies have been incredibly short-sighted, because once you finish the series and then go back and read them again, you realize just how many details end up being very significant. But that's the magic of the books, and the movies will obviously never catch up.
