Yeah I would say Steve's reaction is normal given that his girlfriend basically ignored his compliment to pay attention to a lesser/more generic compliment.  Plus there's the whole "She was originally after you" thing.

On the other hand I think Cosette's reaction may be understandable because Martin's reaction is presumably neutral while significant others often white lie.

Suddenly I remember that Steve easily holds the record for most failed relationships in QC.

I wonder why.

Guess Steve's not taking it very well, the fact that he used to be quite the ladies' man (an informed ability I believe, before the beginning of the strip), and Marten's got a pseudo-harem around him all the time.

If so, he soon won't be.

I absolutely love Tai's expression and ... take on the situation:

Given how Cosette acted at the start of their relationship, it looks like she's growing up.

Which may be bad news for Steve, if this comic is any sort of indicator of his state of maturity.

Then again, he's lost girls to dolphins, lurking exboyfriends, and some sort of witness protection, as best I recall. Losing this one to Marten would be par for the course.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Steve is, or ought to be, aware that Tai is into the ladies; when he and Marten were looking for Cosette, they woke Tai up to get here yearbook and Marten accidentally sat on her friend who happened to be in her bed. Naked.

Whether he noticed (he does tend to get a bit of tunnel-vision when he's focussed obsessed) and whether he thought this merely meant she was also into ladies and not exclusively so is another matter however.

Now that I have had time to think about it, I think Steve does.  I think he was betting that Cosette doesn't.  The point he's trying to make is that he has a right to feel jealous of her blushing at Marten because she would be jealous if the situation was reversed.

I think we may need to work on your definition of "normal".  I would think that Steve's reaction falls into "WTF, where did this level of insecurity come from man?" territory.

Steve' s got a right to be a tad angry; he's handling it in a completely ass way though.  It's pretty apparent Cosette's still interested in Marten, but yelling at her and making a fool of himself isn't going to change that.

In other news; have those near-softcore-porn American Apparel ads always been on the site?  I just didn't remember the topless woman scrolling across the top of the site before.  Or the hairy guys in crotch-holding towels.

They've been in the archive comics for quite a while.  Not all of them are softcore porn, though - many of them emphasize the clothes...

Irrational jealousy tends to be a turn-off for most people; Steve needs to calm down, and talk about his feelings/insecurities with Cosette instead of throwing tantrums.

Uh... Steve's reaction is overblown and childish, but it's not exactly irrational.  I probably haven't commented on these forums in over a year, but I will if something really bothers me, and this does.  Cosette basically ignores his input and blushes at Marten's comment right in front of him, which is worse when you consider she was originally interested in Marten in the first place.  It doesn't matter if she claims that she wouldn't be bothered by the same thing - there's nothing WRONG with Steve being bothered by this.  His reaction, not to mention acting pissed at Marten, is not appropriate - but Cosette's reaction is certainly "off", and if Jeph is trying to make it seem like there was nothing at all weird about that... well, that's just not right.

In short, Steve's reaction being inappropriate doesn't mean that Cosette wasn't acting sketchy.

So? She chose to date Steve. That, presumably, means she's interested in Steve enough for that. Are people in relationships supposed to suddenly become blind to anyone other than their partners, or pretend a compliment isn't flattering because it's not their One and Only making it?

When you think about it, Steve really is a very insecure person. He tries to give the impression that he's a "ladies' man", but look at the way he obsessed over Meena before they got together, how frighteningly eager (rushing into Tai's apartment to look at a picture) he was to find out about Cosette just because she was a girl he maybe, possibly could have a chance with, and how frequently he drinks away his sorrows alone in his living room.

He's right to be worried and upset by Cosette's reaction to Marten's casual compliment, but taking it out on Marten and making a scene like that is clearly out of line.

Yes. You're probably right, but at the moment I couldn't recall and was not inclined to look up the strip. I did remember that she didn't to be returning to her life of crime, which was a shame, as it would've made my post funnier. "Steve's been dumped for lurkers, dolphins, and crime."

Well, maybe not.
I think Meena hurt Steve more than he and/or others realised.
I don't know if I agree with this or not. He got smashed after Ellen dumped him, too, but he did stay drunk longer after the Meena thing. So maybe. Or maybe it was an accumulation sort of affair.

I think I am clearer on one thing, though. In retrospective, I suspect Dave's peculiar behavior was at last partly caused by his being sure Meena was coming back to him; she simply needed to 'show' him she didn't have to. Reading those past strips, I notice how Marten and Dora tell Steve: "Don't give up on her." Which was foolish—anyone that worked up about someone's opinion of them is still heavily involved with that person.

Still, the alternative at that point seemed to be a Steve-Penelope relationship. I suppose they could've taken turns blowing up.

Persecution is always intentional…to the persecuted, anyway. So, if you're not persecuting anyone currently, the answer is 'yes.'

Brought to you by the University of Prof. Wogglebug—Making Moldy Minds for over a century.

(Also, Jeph tweeted that it was intentional…but I refuse to let the facts get in my way. That's the first maxim of dear old PWU.)
