Alien Swarm
« on: 20 Jul 2010, 12:21 »

So Valve hired some community mod-making people to make a game for them, called Alien Swarm. It's a top-down shooter with 4 playable classes, 2 characters per class (with differing stats). It's free to download and play if you've got Steam.

Anyone play it yet? Anyone want to?

Sounds right up my alley, but I already got talked into agreeing to DL and try out League of Legends. I'll definitely give it a shot this weekend though.

This has been causing a pretty big ripple in the modding community, because Valve are using Alien Swarm to release Source SDK, their comeback to the UDK (Unreal Development Kit; allows you to create games using the Unreal engine, but without access to the resources a game studio would have and a few other restrictions). It looks like it'll allow easy map creation and release of mods that won't require games like HL2 to run, however the SDK alone won't allow access to the standard HL2 resources etc; any developer would have to create pretty much the entire game from scratch.

I'm not too bothered about the game itself, but I'll probably check it out anyway.

Tried it and loved it.

Smash TV meets Aliens meets Left 4 Dead

I cannot argue with that formula in any way whatsoever.

Sorry, I didn't realize you need to give the account name instead of the profile name, although it's pretty obvious now that I think about it since I guess people can just change the profile name to whatever. I never use my actual account names as a handle if I can help it, which is pretty pointless with steam since I think there's in-game commands to find out people's Steam IDs pretty easy anyway, if I remember correctly. Easy to forget this stuff when you never bothered with their friend system anyway.

TLDR version: I'm an idiot and the steam ID is whipstitch. Or you can just go here, I guess.

No, I'm pretty sure your account name has nothing to do with your profile name. Specific people are always hard to find via community search, sometimes with too many results, sometimes none. My own profile name is LTK, and searching gives me 170 other people with similar names or group names. So your best bet is to give the link containing steamcommunity.com/id. Mine is http://steamcommunity.com/id/LTK_70

On topic: I freakin' love Jaeger and the Vindicator. :D

I just got the image of a midwife and a woman giving birth swinging towards each other on a trapeze - when they meet, the midwife pulls the baby out. The knife juggler is standing on the floor and cuts the umbilical cord with a a knifethrow.

Love this game.  The harder difficulties really are difficult unlike some other games.
