Caricatures come across immediately. Characters take time to develop.

How true, and Sven did start as a caricature, a "ladies' man" for whom "everything came easy".  Stereotypes are so easy to write.  It wasn't until he screwed up with Faye that he started to develop as a character, and that's still in progress!

Angus, on the other hand, went from being the "argument guy" customer at CoD to being in close orbit with the others in a long circling process.  We've learned a lot about him, but it wasn't all spelled out for us in easy terms.  Beneath the sass and the foot-in-mouth responses there's a lot more there, but we've seen it all through interaction with other characters.  You need to have read the comic pretty carefully to see him through the eyes of others, and like him or not, he evokes a lot more of an opinionated reaction than Sven ever did!

Including BunnyThor's dismissal of him.

And that's one of the reasons he's one of my favorites.

So...Faye hooking up with Angus McBoring is supposedly a good thing?
Right now all we know about Angus is:
  • Blah.
  • Blah.
  • Blah.
  • Blah.
  • His presence is cock-blocking Sven right out of the strip.
So basically, you're a Sven fangirl that dislikes the fact that Angus is in the way. Gotcha.

Sven is still in the strip, if that's the problem (He's not the Sven of old, but that may be just just as well. I have this feeling that things were going to go badly for the Sven of old one day).

As an aside, I loath the term cock-block. It sounds far too little like a description of social jockeying and far too much like something incredibly painful I'd need to see a urologist for. Quickly.

No, basically I'm a fan of interesting and dynamic characters.

With Sven and Faye, there was sparks, conflict, and growth. Jeph used foreshadowing, red herrings, and sleight of hand to draw us into the twisted skein of Faye and Sven's interaction. It was masterful.

With Angus and Faye, there is nothing. The only reason we had to believe that they were interested in each other is that everybody in the strip kept telling us that, over and over again. It feels forced and heavy-handed to me. It feels like they are being brought together for no other reason than to have Faye be with someone.

Angus seems like nothing more than Generic Rebound Hookup, and hopefully he won't last any longer than that type of thing usually lasts.

\ My opinion.

Dora thought so too, in strip 794, without even mentioning the prospect of an ex getting more violent than the one in 531.

Are we reading the same comic?  Or do you just skip the ones with Angus in them, assuming they'll be uninteresting?

Angus was interesting from the very beginning - coming to the coffee shop just to verbally spar with Faye made him a bit of an enigma.  His persistence, in spite of her rebuffs (in the bar especially, when she actually threw him across the room) was at the very least curious.  Unlike Sven, whose behaviour was very predictable, Angus was harder to see through.

And it's not the cast that tells us he's interested in her, though several of them have made that observation.  Angus himself tells us he finds her intriguing in the "bro" scenes with Marten in fancy dress.  The only reason the relationship didn't progress was Faye herself.  After the Sven-pocalypse, she put all her emotions on hold.  It wan't for Angus not trying, and he eventually got her to agree to a training-wheel relationship.  Not that it worked well, and it was full of tension, witness the recent party and their 3rd grade behaviour.

Now the training wheels are off, and Faye is still in that stunned "I'm not falling over?" stage.  As soon as she recovers and realises what's going on, she'll do her best to crash that bike...

Dinner should be interesting!

Feels good to be back after a week at the cottage (well, my aunt's, but she let me and the clan use it for a week) and to catch up on the goings on at my fav webcomics), and damn, I have to say, it looked like an interesting week.

I really like the bonus artwork and I think that one's getting copied.

With a yellow ribbon tied around it?

Might be safer to just tie the wretched thing around the door knob—so long as Angus is familiar with Tony Orlando. Too bad Angus isn't  living in the same building—Faye could rap twice on the pipe instead. If, of course, she could be heard over Dora bludgeoning the ceiling.

You have no idea how much pop I was made to listen to as a child: the radio, the vapid variety shows, the 8-tracks. Well, actually, you might now have some idea, and when.

I was actually referring to Faye's nervous breakdown/passive-agressive suicide attempt, but hey, any Tony Orlando reference is a plus in my book.

I'm old enough to remember his TV variety show...

Carl - you just have to learn to lead better.

And as a general shoult out to the forum last time Faye gets kissed we got 50+ pages - this week we only got 4?  Are people getting more mature?

I believe last time Faye got a few other things besides kissed...

And that was quite out of the blue, too.  This one, while an early surprise, was led up to with a quasi-relationship arrangement (and all the bickering like 3rd graders).  So a lot of the re-hashery was pre-hashed.

That's a very specifice timeframe - one season, as I recall...

OK, my memory officially sucks.  Maybe it was just wishful revisionism.  Except I do recall Tony leaving the show/group, and it was just "Dawn" - I wasn't counting that part.

That, I don't recall. But it started out as Dawn (when Tony O recorded 'Candida'), so I suppose there's a certain symmetry.
